Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Please Believe Me

’I can’t let these mutant beasts advance any further. I have to stop them.’

He Shian turned on the loudspeaker and spoke into the microphone, ”First and Second Squads, redeploy to the rear of the position.”

The captains of the two squads heard the order and immediately led their people toward the rear.

Halfway there, they encountered mutant beasts. Both squads immediately raised their guns and opened fire.

The Single Pilot Mechas also charged forward, clashing with them in a fierce battle.

The mutant beasts’ advance was halted. Shi Feng watched this unfold on the large screen and breathed a sigh of relief.

’Good, they stopped them. If they hadn’t, I can’t imagine how many people would have died.’

”Shi Feng, ask Admiral He to send someone to rescue us.” Lin Jingjing’s voice rang out in the quiet tent.

Hearing this, He Shian immediately searched for them on the screens, finally spotting them on a small monitor in the corner.

All four of them were huddled on a tree branch with countless mutant beasts below. They couldn’t get down and couldn’t escape.

Not only that, but a few mutant beasts were also ramming the tree with their heads.

Their situation was extremely dangerous. If that tree was knocked down, they would all become dinner for the Steel Beasts.

’They really know how to cause trouble.’ At that moment, He Shian completely understood Captain Li’s frustration—having disobedient soldiers who did nothing but stir up trouble.

’And in the end, I’m the one who has to clean up the mess. How could I be happy about that?’

’They’re just a bunch of Grade D wastes. How did they manage to get into such a huge mess?’

’They even took the A-320 heavy sniper rifle. A weapon like that is incredibly powerful.’

’Do they even know how to use it?’

”You stay here. I’ll go rescue them,” He Shian said before turning and leaving the tent.

The four people in the tree all heard He Shian’s words and looked at each other in dismay.

’Why do I have a sudden chill down my spine? Are we doomed?’

”Sister Lin, are we really going to get twenty strikes with the military cane?” Mo Xuan asked her seriously.

Lin Jingjing stroked her chin, thought for a moment, and said, ”Probably.”

She had been punished with twenty strikes last time.

’Since He Shian said it himself, it’s probably true.’

He left the tent, boarded his Mecha, and flew off in the direction of Lin Jingjing and her group.

When he arrived, he saw the four of them squatting on the tree branch, staring blankly at the mutant beasts below.

Someone was even bored enough to be tossing leaves down at them. They had no sense of crisis whatsoever, as if they were just out for a stroll.

He Shian struggled to calm himself. ’Once this battle is over, I’m definitely going to have Captain Li train this group to death.’

’That should stop them from causing trouble every single day.’ After thinking this, He Shian activated his loudspeaker and shouted to them, ”Jump over and grab onto my Mecha. I’ll get you out of here.”

As he spoke, he maneuvered the Mecha’s hands in front of them.

The Mecha’s hands were huge, more than large enough for two people to stand on each.

Once all four were safely on board, He Shian accelerated, whisking them away from the area.

The powerful wind whipped against their faces, making their cheeks sting. It wasn’t just the wind; small branches also scraped across their faces, and it hurt.

The force of the wind made it almost impossible for them to keep their eyes open.

A few minutes later, they stopped in front of the tent. The Mecha’s arms hung low, close to the ground.

The group quickly jumped down. Standing on the ground, their faces were pale, their hair was a mess, and their cheeks were covered in small cuts.

Beads of blood seeped from the wounds and trickled down their faces.

He Shian emerged from the Mecha’s cockpit. Seeing them standing there limply, he said in a cold voice, ”Get inside, now!”

”Yes...” Their voices were weak and listless.

Once inside the tent, the group stood in the back, not daring to move.

He Shian’s gaze swept over them. After confirming they had no serious injuries, he looked away.

He thought to himself, ’Next year’s recruitment can’t include anyone with Grade D spiritual power. They have no sense of self-preservation and just love to cause trouble.’

Just then, the screen flashed red again, and an alert sounded.

[BEEP BEEP—TERRITORY 10% OCCUPIED BY MUTANT BEASTS]

[BEEP—CASUALTIES EXCEED 60,000]

More and more people were dying, and ten percent of the previously secured territory had been overrun by mutant beasts.

’This is dangerous. If we don’t figure something out, we’re all going to die here.’

They were hopelessly outnumbered. There were too many mutant beasts and too few of them.

Although there were many Single Pilot Mechas, they couldn’t withstand the mutant beasts’ frenzied attacks.

The Red-winged Beasts in the sky were even more dominant, tearing apart nearly every Mecha that tried to fight them.

’Do I really have to request reinforcements?’

He Shian stared at the two alerts, his expression grim.

Lin Jingjing could see his hesitation. She couldn’t bear to see more people die in the jaws of mutant beasts either.

Everyone in the tent was silent. After steeling herself, Lin Jingjing took a step forward, looked at He Shian, and said earnestly, ”Captain He, I know how to end this battle quickly.”

He Shian glanced at her. He saw that Lin Jingjing was wearing a black protective suit with the heavy sniper rifle on her back. As she spoke, her gaze was unwavering, her entire demeanor resolute.

It was as if she had truly found a way to quickly end this confrontation between humans and mutant beasts.

”A Grade D like you who doesn’t know anything shouldn’t be saying such things,” He Shian said coldly. ’Besides, how long have they even been in the First Corps?’

’Not even a month. Their academic lessons haven’t even started, so how could they possibly know anything about these mutant beasts?’

”Right now, the best way for you to atone for your mistakes is to stay put right here,” He Shian said.

After speaking, he turned his gaze back to the large screen, his ice-blue eyes taking in the images of the soldiers fighting on the front lines.

He saw soldiers who couldn’t hold on, their bodies torn apart by a single swipe from a mutant beast’s claw.

He saw others, in their final moments, pull out a massive bomb to take the enemy down with them.

Watching the young soldier’s body explode into a bloody mist, everyone in the tent closed their eyes, unable to bear the sight.

This only strengthened Lin Jingjing’s resolve. ’As long as I kill that white mutant beast.’

’Maybe they’ll retreat.’

”Admiral He, please, just trust me this one time.” Lin Jingjing took another step forward, her voice even more resolute.

He Shian looked up at her and saw that her entire presence had changed.

If before she was just clear about what she wanted to do, now Lin Jingjing was absolutely unwavering in her conviction.

’It has to be done, and I have to win.’

He Shian looked at these young brats, fearless as newborn calves facing a tiger. ’They haven’t yet grasped the true meaning of death, which is why they can say such things.’

For some reason, a thought suddenly surfaced in He Shian’s mind. ’After they get a taste of death, maybe then these wastes will understand just how wonderful it is to be alive.’

’The fresh air, the warm sun, delicious food, the chirping of insects, the fragrance of flowers...’

’These are all things you can’t experience after you’re dead. Since these four want to go get themselves killed...’

’...then let them go.’

’Go on. After you come back, you’ll know how good it is to be alive.’

”Fine,” He Shian narrowed his eyes and agreed coldly. ”As long as you’re not afraid to die.”
