I See Murders Before They Happen

Chapter 149: Chapter 147: Arrived in Jiangcheng

Just as Su Miaoyi was about to leave Zhuang Yanzheng’s office, Yan Cheng arrived.

”Slept wrong and got a stiff neck?” Yan Cheng asked, looking at her.

”Yes.” Su Miaoyi’s eyes lit up. ”Do you know how to fix it?”

”Let me see.” Yan Cheng pressed on her neck.

The pain nearly made Su Miaoyi’s eyebrows shoot off her forehead, but she gritted her teeth and didn’t make a sound.

”Sit in the chair,” Yan Cheng said.

Su Miaoyi sat back down in the chair in front of the desk.

Zhuang Yanzheng watched the two of them quietly.

”Forensic Doctor Yan, are you sure about this?” Su Miaoyi was suddenly a little scared, deliberately emphasizing the words ”Forensic Doctor.”

’After all, these were the same hands that usually touched corpses.’

”I’ve studied it.” Yan Cheng’s voice had a reassuring quality. He cradled her head with his arm, which he’d placed under her chin. ”Relax.”

’Relaxing was a little difficult; she was mostly just nervous. To be honest, Yan Cheng exuded a meticulousness that also made him seem solid and dependable. Unlike some people who, despite also being reliable, usually gave off the menacing air of a thug.’

”Are you badmouthing me?” Zhuang Yanzheng asked.

”Of course not,” Su Miaoyi said with an innocent look. ”I didn’t say a word.”

”You were badmouthing me with your face. I could tell,” Zhuang Yanzheng said.

”I did not.” Just as Su Miaoyi finished saying these three words and closed her mouth...

Yan Cheng suddenly gave a sharp twist.

Su Miaoyi felt her head being sharply twisted to one side. Her eyes flew wide open. ”Am I still here?”

”If you’re not here, where do you want to be?” Zhuang Yanzheng looked at her. ”Sprouting wings to soar through heaven and earth?”

Yan Cheng chuckled and rubbed her neck a couple more times. ”There. All better.”

Su Miaoyi wiggled her head. ”It’s really better.”

Yan Cheng smiled. ”Be careful for the next couple of days. Don’t make any big movements.”

Su Miaoyi stood up from the chair and clasped her fists in a mock salute. ”A miraculous recovery! You’re a divine doctor!”

”Is that new trend out of style already?” Zhuang Yanzheng said.

”You wouldn’t get it,” Su Miaoyi said. ”I’ll let you get back to work. I’m leaving.”

Yan Cheng nodded.

Zhuang Yanzheng said, ”Contact Kang Ting first and get the details.”

”Okay.”

...

The bureau’s approval came through quickly.

That afternoon, Su Miaoyi and Lu Zhishen boarded a flight to Jiangcheng.

Once on the plane, Lu Zhishen gave Su Miaoyi an eye mask.

He put one on himself and then went to sleep.

Su Miaoyi looked at him, motionless beside her, then at the eye mask in her hand, and then she touched her neck.

She was a little worried that if she fell asleep, she’d wake up with a crooked neck again.

’No way. It’s one thing to look a mess at home, but I have to be more mindful of my image when I’m out.’

Su Miaoyi looked at the eye mask in her hand again.

It was a little bear eye mask, very cute.

The one on Lu Zhishen’s face was all black.

Hers even had two little bear ears on it.

Staring at the eye mask, her thoughts turned to the case Kang Ting had told her about.

Kang Ting said that a week ago, the command center had suddenly received a call from a girl reporting a crime.

She said she was in an alley behind a KTV across from Jiangcheng University. From there, she saw another girl being pulled into a car on the road opposite the alley.

She said she had taken a picture of the people in the car.

But she was hiding in the alley and was too afraid to come out.

While the operator was calming her down and contacting police dispatch, the girl on the other end screamed, and the line suddenly went dead.

The precinct near Jiangcheng University immediately dispatched officers, and the command center tried calling back right away.

But the call didn’t go through.

By the time the precinct officers arrived at the alley, the girl was already dead. Her phone had been taken, but the SIM card had been removed and thrown aside.

It took the local precinct less than ten minutes to get to the KTV’s back alley.

The girl’s neck had been snapped, and her tongue had been cut out.

Afterward... they found nothing.

The surveillance cameras caught nothing.

And no other leads were found.

They did, however, manage to track the suspicious vehicle.

But it had a fake license plate.

And since the culprits knew they’d been exposed, they abandoned the car.

When the car was found, it was in a forest on the outskirts of the city, burned down to its frame.

A week went by with no progress on the case.

Kang Ting said that since it happened near the university, there were a lot of college students around.

Many students saw the police when they arrived at the scene.

Although the police and the university did their best to keep the matter quiet, it still ended up online.

The students were all in a panic, and the case was stalled.

That’s why Kang Ting wanted to ask Su Miaoyi for her help.

...

「Arrival in Jiangcheng.」

Song Yucheng was there to pick them up from the airport.

When Song Yucheng saw the two of them, he immediately walked forward a few steps. ”Thank you for making this trip.”

Su Miaoyi said, ”It’s all for the case.”

Lu Zhishen nodded at Song Yucheng.

He’d had insomnia for several days, so he had slept soundly on the plane and was still having trouble waking up.

Neither of them had much luggage, just one bag each.

As they were walking out, Su Miaoyi was in front, while Lu Zhishen followed behind her with his head down.

Su Miaoyi paused for a moment.

Lu Zhishen stepped on the back of her shoe, knocking it off.

After that, she maintained a steady pace, not daring to stop again.

”Let me get that,” Song Yucheng said, reaching for Su Miaoyi’s bag.

”I can get it myself,” Su Miaoyi said. ”There’s no need to be so formal.”

They got in the car.

Lu Zhishen sat in the front passenger seat, while Su Miaoyi sat in the back.

She searched on her phone for the storage place Mo Xiaoxiao had mentioned.

The storage place was on the way between the airport and the municipal bureau.

But it would require a slight detour.

’Better go check it out now, just in case. After all, my trip to Jiangcheng is no secret. Jiang Yaozu and Jiang Junrui are both in Jiangcheng right now. They might be on their guard against me.’

”Deputy Song,” Su Miaoyi said, showing him the location on her phone. ”Let’s go to this location first.”

Song Yucheng tilted his head to look, asked no questions, and said simply, ”Okay.”

Su Miaoyi glanced at him. ’So agreeable.’

She turned up the volume on her phone’s navigation.

After driving for a while following the navigation, Song Yucheng said, ”Um... Miss Su.”

”Yes?” Su Miaoyi looked at him.

Song Yucheng glanced at her in the rearview mirror. ”You saved me before the New Year, and I never got the chance to thank you. Thank you for saving my life.”

Lu Zhishen glanced over at him and noticed his ears had turned red.

Su Miaoyi stared at the back of his head.

”Also, I’m sorry,” Song Yucheng said. ”My attitude was bad before. That was my fault. I’m sorry, and I hope you won’t hold it against me.”

”That’s all in the past, so let’s not talk about it.” Su Miaoyi smiled and patted the back of his seat. ”I’m a very vengeful person and I’ll get my revenge, so don’t take it to heart.”

Lu Zhishen cracked a small smile.

Song Yucheng’s mouth twitched, and he gave a dry laugh. ”Of course, of course.”

After that, the three of them fell silent.

Lu Zhishen wasn’t fully awake and was a bit lethargic.

And Su Miaoyi and Song Yucheng didn’t really know each other very well.

They drove in silence the rest of the way to the storage place Mo Xiaoxiao had mentioned.

Su Miaoyi went inside and gave them Mo Xiaoxiao’s information.

Since she didn’t have Mo Xiaoxiao’s ID or authorization, she had Song Yucheng show his police badge.

Only then did a staff member lead the three of them inside.

There were rows upon rows of little compartments. Many pets were kept here after they had passed away.

After finding the compartment for Mo Xiaoxiao’s pet, Su Miaoyi looked inside.

Inside were fresh flowers, canned food, dog food, and some treats.

”Are these things replaced often, or...”

”We replace them on a regular basis,” the staff member said.

Su Miaoyi nodded and looked at the pet’s urn.

’Then it can only be in the urn...’
