I See Murders Before They Happen

Chapter 129: Chapter 127: Why Is It Always the Shen Family?

Late at night, everything was quiet.

With fewer pedestrians and cars, the roads had become much more deserted.

It was still chilly in the hours after midnight.

A gust of wind swept past, raising goosebumps on the skin.

”Su Miaoyi! Su Miaoyi? Su Miaoyi!”

In an unfinished plaza, Shen Yanzhou knelt beside Su Miaoyi, gripping her arm and calling her name.

Su Miaoyi, however, was squatting on the ground, clawing at the concrete with her bare hands.

When she couldn’t break through, she just clawed harder.

And when clawing harder didn’t work, she put in even more force.

Shen Yanzhou couldn’t stop her.

”Su Miaoyi!” Shen Yanzhou pressed down on her hands again.

The skin on her fingers had been scraped raw against the concrete.

Without a word, Su Miaoyi twisted her wrists, trying to break free.

Shen Yanzhou held her wrists tightly, locked in a struggle with her.

In the dead of night, in an unfinished plaza, the two of them were locked in a standoff, squatting on the ground.

Even a passing ghost would have to stop and stare out of curiosity.

Shen Yanzhou saw that beads of blood were starting to form on her fingers. Noticing she was pushing even harder, he tightened his grip as well.

Then, a few seconds later, Su Miaoyi suddenly asked, ”What are you doing?”

Shen Yanzhou looked up at her.

Su Miaoyi stared at him, bewildered and shocked. ”What are you doing?”

Shen Yanzhou saw that her eyes were clear now, no longer vacant like they were just moments ago.

”Don’t tell me you’ve taken a liking to my hands and are trying to twist them off,” Su Miaoyi said, even more shocked.

Shen Yanzhou released her wrists.

”Hiss—” Su Miaoyi sucked in a sharp breath from the pain and quickly rubbed her wrists. Then she looked at Shen Yanzhou. ”What are you doing here?”

”Where are we?” Shen Yanzhou asked.

”This is...” Su Miaoyi realized something was wrong and looked around.

It was dark and empty.

The distant streetlights did little to drive away the darkness.

”How did I get here?” she muttered, getting to her feet.

As she stood, the jacket draped over her shoulders fell to the ground.

She looked down and saw she was in her pajamas.

Her first thought was:

’I wore my ugliest pajamas out.’

Her second thought was:

Ahhh!!!

’It’s so cold!’

Shen Yanzhou picked up the jacket from the ground and draped it over her again.

Su Miaoyi immediately slipped her arms into the sleeves and wrapped it tightly around herself, then looked at Shen Yanzhou, who was just in a dress shirt.

The jacket was his.

She immediately moved to take it off again.

”Keep it on,” Shen Yanzhou said. ”I’m not cold.”

Su Miaoyi wrapped herself up again and cupped her fists. ”Words can’t express my gratitude.”

”Then how will you express it?” Shen Yanzhou asked.

”With a bow of thanks.” Su Miaoyi then gave him a bow.

Shen Yanzhou: ”...”

”Don’t you think that in this setting, a bow is... a little creepy?” Shen Yanzhou said.

Su Miaoyi looked around again. It was indeed creepy.

”Did I... walk here by myself?” she asked.

Shen Yanzhou nodded. ”What happened?”

”You ran into me again?” Instead of answering right away, Su Miaoyi asked another question.

”Yes,” Shen Yanzhou said. ”I was heading back to Weiyang Palace after work when I saw you at the community gate, walking out in your pajamas. I got out of my car and called to you, but you didn’t respond.”

Su Miaoyi glanced around again, trying to figure out where she was.

”So I followed you all the way here,” Shen Yanzhou finished.

In reality, he had tried to stop her along the way.

Su Miaoyi had pushed him away.

He kept trying to block her, and Su Miaoyi had been on the verge of fighting him.

Unable to stop her, he could only follow.

After walking for over two hours, they had arrived at this spot.

”And after we got here?” Su Miaoyi asked.

Shen Yanzhou glanced at the ground beneath them. ”You squatted here and tried to dig through the concrete with your bare hands.”

Su Miaoyi looked down.

Then she looked at her scraped hands.

’What a stubborn Special Ability.’

Seeing she wasn’t surprised by her own actions, Shen Yanzhou asked, ”Has this happened before? Sleepwalking?”

Su Miaoyi looked at him and shook her head. ”No.”

”Then what is it?”

”There’s a body under here,” Su Miaoyi said.

Shen Yanzhou was taken aback. ”It’s late at night. Do you know how scary that sounds?”

Su Miaoyi looked at him. ”We have to dig it up.”

Shen Yanzhou fell silent for a moment.

Su Miaoyi said, ”An unfinished plaza... judging by the progress, this section must have been completed a while ago.”

A stylishly designed circular platform had been built here.

It was about half a meter high.

Tearing it down would certainly be a financial loss.

Furthermore, it involved digging up a body.

People are generally quite superstitious about such things.

Negotiations would definitely be required.

”Whose project is this?” Su Miaoyi asked as she walked toward the edge of the site to see the developer’s name.

When she got to the edge, she looked up. ”Shen...”

She didn’t finish the word, her gaze shifting to Shen Yanzhou.

Shen Yanzhou walked over as well, staring at the large characters of his family’s corporate name.

Su Miaoyi watched him without saying a word.

Shen Yanzhou let out a soft sigh and looked at her. ”Are you sure there’s a body down there?”

Su Miaoyi nodded.

Shen Yanzhou nodded as well. ”Understood.”

Su Miaoyi said, ”It has to be torn down.”

”Mm,” Shen Yanzhou agreed. ”Let’s wait until morning. It’ll cause a disturbance at night. I also need to go back and make some arrangements.”

If they disturbed the public, the situation would blow up.

The Shen family couldn’t afford another trending topic about a body being found at one of their construction sites.

He had to make arrangements overnight.

This news had to be contained.

”Am I a suspect again?” Shen Yanzhou’s tone was tinged with a calm insanity.

Su Miaoyi didn’t speak, only casting a sympathetic glance his way.

Shen Yanzhou said, ”Let’s go. We’ll head back first.”

Su Miaoyi followed him back to Weiyang Palace.

...

「The Shen Residence.」

Shen Jun was woken up in the middle of the night. He was in his pajamas with a robe thrown over his shoulders, his face a mask of groggy irritation.

After hearing what Shen Yanzhou had to say, he was speechless for a full half-minute. ”Did the recent cold snap freeze your brain? Do you hear what you’re saying?”

Shen Yanzhou looked at his father.

He had taken Su Miaoyi back to Weiyang Palace before coming straight home.

This matter had to be discussed overnight.

”Shen Yanzhou, tell me, am I dreaming?” Shen Jun said with a frown.

”Dad, please accept reality,” Shen Yanzhou said. ”Don’t run from it.”

Shen Jun shot to his feet and began pacing furiously. ”A body? Why wasn’t it discovered during construction? That section is already finished—it’s been done for four months! The whole plaza is scheduled for completion next month. And now you’re telling me there’s a body buried underneath it.”

Shen Yanzhou couldn’t possibly explain Su Miaoyi’s words, so he brought up Zhuang Yanzheng instead.

As a result, Shen Jun assumed the killer had confessed to the burial location.

”Do you have any idea that digging that spot up means we’ll have to tear down and rebuild the entire surrounding area?” Shen Jun still felt like he was in a dream. ”Do you know how much extra money and effort that will cost?”

Shen Yanzhou didn’t say a word.

”And another thing—why is there another body? Why does our family always run into this kind of thing?! It’s just bizarre!” Shen Jun suddenly roared. ”Why is it always our family getting messed with like this?”
