I See Murders Before They Happen

Chapter 128: Chapter 126: One Hundred Thousand Whys

They arrived at the hospital, and she was put on an IV drip.

Su Miaoyi’s shivering gradually subsided.

Once she stopped shivering, she quickly fell asleep.

Shen Yanzhou sat in the chair by her bed, watching the IV drip.

’Even her reaction to a high fever is exactly the same as Le Yan’s,’ he thought.

There were two bags in total.

When the first bag was empty, Shen Yanzhou got up and pressed the call button.

As he sat down again, Su Miaoyi’s eyes suddenly fluttered open.

The high fever had made her eyes very red. She opened them and looked at him.

”You’re awake?” Shen Yanzhou asked. ”Would you like some water?”

Su Miaoyi stared straight at him. After a long moment, her eyes blinked faintly.

”What’s wrong? Are you still feeling unwell somewhere?” Shen Yanzhou’s voice was soft and gentle, as if he were afraid of startling her.

Su Miaoyi kept looking at him. After a while, her lips moved. ”Shen Yanzhou, why are you different from before?”

The words were mumbled and indistinct.

Shen Yanzhou’s eyes flickered, and he asked with a sense of urgency, ”What?”

But Su Miaoyi just blinked slowly a couple more times, let out a sigh-like breath, closed her eyes, and fell asleep again.

Shen Yanzhou opened his mouth, about to press her for more, but when he heard her steady breathing, he closed it again.

Su Miaoyi’s fever broke after she finished the IV drip.

However, she remained asleep and didn’t wake up.

It was only after she woke up the next day that she returned to Weiyang Palace.

”Um... thank you for last night,” Su Miaoyi said after they stepped out of the elevator.

Shen Yanzhou noted her politeness. ”You’re welcome. The doctor prescribed some medicine. The instructions are on the boxes, so take it on time.”

Su Miaoyi took the boxes of medicine. ”Okay.”

”Go on back,” Shen Yanzhou said.

”Mhm.”

Su Miaoyi returned to her apartment and collapsed onto the living room sofa the moment she walked in.

Her head felt groggy and heavy.

She felt awful and just wanted to sleep.

After lying on the sofa for a while, she got up and went to the kitchen to pour a glass of water.

Just as she was about to drink, the scene before her eyes changed.

In the vision, she was wearing headphones, sitting in front of her computer and typing.

Familiar music played through her headphones.

It wasn’t gentle music; the volume was a bit loud, but not jarringly so.

It was perfect for blocking out external noise without distracting her from her writing.

It was a song she often listened to while writing.

She typed away on her keyboard. After a little while, she suddenly remembered she hadn’t closed the living room window.

She finished writing the last bit, checked for typos, and hit publish. Then she took off her headphones and got up to close the window.

The forecast had predicted rain that night, and she was worried it would get in.

When she reached the living room, before she could even get to the window, she heard the front door opening.

Her heart leaped in alarm, and she spun around.

She saw two masked men walking in through the door.

The two men saw her and froze for a second at the entrance.

”What are you doing?” she blurted out instinctively.

But the words came out in a trembling voice.

The two men exchanged a look, then advanced on her.

She turned to run, wanting to scream for help.

But she was too terrified. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.

She tried to run but was grabbed.

A man’s hands grabbed her head and twisted it forcefully. She thought she heard the sound of bone snapping before she closed her eyes and lost consciousness...

CRASH—

The glass of water in her hand had fallen to the floor.

Shards of glass scattered across the ground.

The water inside had splashed all over her legs.

Su Miaoyi snapped back to her senses and staggered back two steps.

Her chest heaved violently.

The vision... that was her computer, the content of the novel she was writing, her bedroom, her living room in Jinrong District.

She...

After standing rooted to the spot for a moment, Su Miaoyi walked to the bedroom and turned on the computer on her desk.

She had seen the content of the novel she was writing in the vision.

Following her memory, she found the corresponding Chapter.

It was published on June 29th of last year.

Right after publishing it, she was murdered.

Su Miaoyi sank into the chair at her desk.

She continued to think about the vision she had seen.

Her head was covered in sweat, her face was pale, and her lips were ashen.

She thought about the two men from the vision.

They were masked, so she couldn’t see their faces.

But she could make out their height, build, and even their general bearing.

She closed her eyes.

One of them was Cao Hong.

The other one... was also familiar.

’Who was it?’

’Height, weight, gait, overall presence...’

Su Miaoyi’s eyes snapped open.

It was Zheng Hui.

Just as they had suspected, Zheng Hui wasn’t dead.

Kang Ting had said he died in a car crash three years ago.

But on June 29th of last year, he had appeared in Jinrong District.

He faked his death.

And another thing.

The process of burying the body that she saw through Cao Hong’s eyes...

There were two men. One was Cao Hong, and the other was also Zheng Hui.

’Then the body they buried... was it Su Miaoyi?’

’But where was that place?’

Su Miaoyi swallowed hard.

Her throat was dry and sore.

”Do you believe me now?” the voice in her head spoke up again.

The sudden sound made Su Miaoyi jump.

”You saw the scene of her death,” the voice in her head said. ”The novel’s content, the layout of the Jinrong District apartment—it all proves you witnessed the crime scene from Su Miaoyi’s perspective.”

”Then who am I?” Su Miaoyi asked.

”I don’t know,” the voice in her head replied.

”And who are you?” Su Miaoyi asked again. ”You keep saying you’re me, that we’re the same person, but why can we talk to each other like this?”

”Something very serious must have happened to you in the past, and then I... appeared,” said the voice in her head.

”I don’t understand.” Su Miaoyi felt like her brain was short-circuiting.

It felt like it was overheating.

”Maybe you’ll understand once you get your memories back,” the voice in her head said. ”I don’t really get it either.”

”What if they never come back?” Su Miaoyi asked.

”Is that really so important to you?” the voice in her head asked.

”What?”

”Your memories, who you are—is any of it that important?”

Su Miaoyi didn’t answer.

”Aren’t you creating new memories right now?” the voice in her head said coldly.

Her tone was always cool and detached, occasionally tinged with impatience.

Su Miaoyi still didn’t speak.

”Even if you can’t accept it, you’d better start trying.”

Su Miaoyi leaned back, rocking her chair slowly. Her eyes were half-lidded. After a long while, she finally said, ”Those memories felt too real. The fear of seeing the body, fainting at the sight of blood, the low blood sugar... even that terror and the weakness in my legs from stepping over the edge of the building—I experienced all of it. And now you’re telling me I’m not Su Miaoyi.”

”Your fear, your hemophobia, your hypoglycemia—it’s all just signals your brain is sending you. And your brain has been taken over by Su Miaoyi’s memories,” the voice in her head said. ”Why do you only get scared of blood when someone reminds you? Why aren’t you scared of it now? Because it’s just a memory. It’s not *you*.”

Su Miaoyi fell silent for another moment before saying, ”So, based on all this, it seems I’ve died once, too, right?”

”Mhm,” the voice in her head affirmed. ”Judging by the vision you had when you fainted yesterday, that’s what it looks like.”

”Then how am I alive again?” She didn’t understand. She had so many questions. ”How did I die? Why did I die?”

”After I died, I met a Su Miaoyi who had also died. Why didn’t Su Miaoyi come back herself?”

”Why could I come back, but Su Miaoyi couldn’t?”

”Why did I have to come back?”

”Am I only able to see the crime scene vision because I came back?”

”Whose body is this, then? Is it Su Miaoyi’s?”

”Was she dug up after being buried?”

”Who dug her up? Did I?”

”No, the birthmark on the body is gone.”

”If it’s not her body, then why do I look exactly like her?”

”How did I come back to life? Why was I able to come back to life?”

The voice in her head took a deep breath and said through gritted teeth, ”Get out of the house right now, call a cab, find a publisher, and you can write the next edition of *A Hundred Thousand Whys*.”

”See, you’re getting impatient again. I was just asking,” Su Miaoyi said.

”I’m not the one influenced by Su Miaoyi’s memories! In fact, I have one month *less* memory than you do. What good is asking me?!”

Su Miaoyi went quiet...
