I See Murders Before They Happen

Chapter 131: Chapter 129: Delivered to the Door

”It’s not her, just someone who looks a lot like her,” Lu Zhishen said. ”But when we run a match in the system, her information will likely pop up.”

Su Miaoyi looked at Zhuang Yanzheng.

Zhuang Yanzheng glanced at the sketch, then back at Su Miaoyi.

They did look very similar, but there were still some differences.

Just then, Yan Cheng arrived.

He walked past the entrance to the art room, then quickly backed up. ”Oh, you’re all here.”

”Did the results come in?” Zhuang Yanzheng asked.

”Yeah.” Yan Cheng handed him the report. ”There’s no matching DNA in the gene bank.”

Su Miaoyi froze.

’How is that possible?!’

’Ji Sheng’s DNA didn’t match?’

’Wasn’t it Su Miaoyi?’

But deep down, she was certain it was her.

At the end of June, the location where the body was buried—that plaza—hadn’t been developed yet.

It was indeed a very suitable place to bury a body.

It was only later that the Shen family developed it.

No body was discovered during the process.

The timeline also fit.

”I’ll go run a match on the sketch,” Zhuang Yanzheng said.

”I’ll go too,” Su Miaoyi said.

In the end, the four of them went together.

The result of the match was... only Su Miaoyi’s information came up.

But Su Miaoyi was standing right in front of them.

Thanks to Lu Zhishen’s warning, they weren’t surprised when Su Miaoyi’s information appeared.

However, a flicker of hesitation crossed Zhuang Yanzheng’s face for a second before vanishing in an instant.

Su Miaoyi didn’t say anything.

Yan Cheng said, ”It doesn’t match any of the registered missing persons, either.”

Zhuang Yanzheng looked at Su Miaoyi.

Su Miaoyi shook her head. ”I didn’t see anything either.”

...

They worked late into the night again.

On his way back, Zhuang Yanzheng dropped Su Miaoyi off at Weiyang Palace.

”What’s wrong today? You don’t seem like yourself,” Zhuang Yanzheng asked after stopping the car.

”Maybe I didn’t rest well yesterday.” Su Miaoyi unbuckled her seatbelt. ”It could also be a lingering effect from the fever.”

Zhuang Yanzheng looked at her but didn’t press further. ”The temperature has been fluctuating. Take care.”

”Okay.” Su Miaoyi got out of the car.

After Zhuang Yanzheng drove away,

she used facial recognition to enter the residential complex.

She thought to herself as she walked toward her apartment building.

’This body isn’t the original Su Miaoyi’s, but facial recognition still works when my ID is scanned.’

’How did I end up looking exactly like Su Miaoyi?’

’And... why didn’t the body’s DNA match Ji Sheng’s?’

’Wasn’t it Su Miaoyi?’

’The height, age, clothes... they all matched.’

’Why didn’t the DNA match? Where did things go wrong?’

As she walked through the complex, turning these things over in her mind, she suddenly found something useful in her memories.

To be precise, she found something in the original Su Miaoyi’s memories.

One summer in the old city district.

It was too hot. Rain was falling outside, spattering against the windows, so she had cracked open her bedroom door.

She heard Cheng Yong say to Ge Yu, ”I heard Ji Sheng is sick. Some kind of blood disease, and it’s pretty serious.”

”Serves him right.” Worried Su Miaoyi might overhear, Ge Yu and Cheng Yong kept their voices low. ”What goes around comes around. Wait, that’s not right. I just saw him on the news a couple of days ago, and he looked full of energy. He’s a lot thinner, sure, but he didn’t seem sick.”

”He had a bone marrow transplant,” Cheng Yong said. ”He’s all better now. That was six months ago.”

”Then why are you bringing it up now?” Ge Yu asked.

”I just heard about it myself,” Cheng Yong said. ”It’s too hot to sleep, and it just popped into my head, so I thought I’d mention it.”

”So you only tell me because you can’t sleep, is that it?” Ge Yu retorted.

”There you go again,” Cheng Yong sighed.

Ge Yu huffed. ”It really is too hot. Let’s go buy a couple of air conditioners tomorrow. This money... it’s better to spend it on comfort than to save it and suffer.”

”Aren’t you going to install one in your son’s room?” Cheng Yong asked.

”Why don’t you go be hot yourself? Why are you trying to make my son suffer?” Ge Yu said.

”So we should both be hot? And let that kid live in luxury?” Cheng Yong asked.

”Buy three? What kind of family do you think we are, to be so extravagant!” Ge Yu said. ”Buy two. Put one in Miaomiao’s room and the other in the living room. Our place isn’t that big anyway. With one in the living room, our room and Cheng Jue’s room will both cool down if we leave our doors open. Miaomiao is a young girl. It’s not proper for her to leave her door open in the summer, so give her a separate one.”

”Alright, I’ll go take a look tomorrow.”

Snapping out of the memory, Su Miaoyi realized she had almost reached the entrance of her building.

She remembered now. Ji Sheng had received a bone marrow transplant.

He had two sets of DNA.

Because hematopoietic stem cells come from a donor, the DNA in a person’s blood will match the donor’s. However, the DNA in the rest of their body remains unchanged from before the transplant.

The DNA from a blood test would be the donor’s DNA.

Su Miaoyi stepped onto the stairs at the entrance of her apartment building.

Just as she was thinking, she caught a glimpse of a black shadow in her peripheral vision, closing in on her at an incredible speed.

Her mind was preoccupied with Ji Sheng, so her reaction was a beat too slow when she saw the shadow.

She didn’t get a clear look at the shadow, only discerning that it was a man and that a cord was about to be wrapped around her neck.

She instinctively raised a hand and grabbed the cord, but she was still dragged into the flower bed beside the building.

The man was incredibly strong and kept tightening the cord.

Su Miaoyi clutched the cord with one hand and jabbed her other elbow backward.

But the man just kept pulling the cord tighter.

Su Miaoyi’s hand was wedged between the cord and her neck.

She pulled harder at the cord. When a few elbow strikes proved useless, she twisted her arm back and grabbed the man’s wrist.

With a sudden, powerful yank, the man’s grip went slack.

She immediately broke free and put some distance between them. Slipping a hand into her pocket, she pressed the power button five times, alerting Zhuang Yanzheng.

It was very late, and there was no one outside.

Besides, the complex wasn’t very populated to begin with.

The man’s face was covered, and in the darkness, not even his eyes were visible. He flexed his wrist and immediately lunged forward again.

Su Miaoyi clashed with him.

He was a very formidable man.

Stronger than Cao Hong, and even a bit stronger than Huang Haoxu.

And he was here to kill her.

He was constantly using lethal force.

Su Miaoyi tried to trip him.

The man lost his footing, but before he fell, he pulled her down with him.

The two of them tumbled into the flower bed,

flattening all the newly transplanted flowers.

She tried to pin him to the ground.

He tried to pin her to the ground.

Neither succeeded. After breaking apart, they both scrambled to their feet at top speed and clashed again.

Zhuang Yanzheng hadn’t gone far and arrived quickly.

Seeing Zhuang Yanzheng running over from a distance, the man tried to flee.

But Su Miaoyi blocked him.

It took some effort, but in the end, Zhuang Yanzheng and Su Miaoyi pinned him to the ground together.

The man struggled, trying to escape.

Zhuang Yanzheng cuffed him.

Su Miaoyi, panting heavily, said, ”Zheng Hui, you delivered yourself right to my door.”

She had recognized him long ago.

She just hadn’t said anything, worried it would provoke him.

The man’s struggles suddenly paused for a moment.

Zhuang Yanzheng pulled off his mask and took a look. ”So it really is you.”
