My Perfect Isekai: Pragmatic Protagonist, Progression Fantasy and Strategy

A damp, freezing dawn hung low over the forest training ground. The fog, thick and heavy as unspun wool, crawled lazily between the rugged basalt pillars I had erected here many weeks ago. Every breath of cold wind carried a biting chill, the scent of damp earth, decaying leaves, and cold, wet stone. In this muted space of the deep forest beyond Crossgard, isolated from the outside world, no birds sang, nor were there any sounds of wildlife. There reigned only a raw, pure silence, broken solely by the measured, heavy breathing of my exhausted lungs and the dry, sharp crack of a bamboo staff striking my bare skin time and again.

WHISH! CRACK!

A sudden strike of the bamboo fell directly onto my left forearm. I leaped back two meters into the wet moss, digging my bare feet into the ground, but my reaction was late by a critical fraction of a second. The welt on my skin immediately burned with a sharp, searing pain, and my sapphire mana sparked reflexively in my conduits, trying to forge a hard armor plate at the point of impact.

”Same mistake again, kid,” the old man spoke up. His rough, concise voice, though quiet, cut through the morning fog with the weight of a blacksmith’s hammer. ”You’re still trying to cheat your own limits. When you see an incoming strike, your first unconditional reflex is a violent surge of energy. You want to flood your entire body with mana, tense your conduits, and take the full tonnage of the strike on your chest. You think your internal lines are muscles you can flex and reinforce when danger appears.”

I spat a glob of thick saliva mixed with specks of moss and slowly pushed myself up from the ground, straightening my aching joints. Every movement brought physical pain, and the muscles in my thighs and back throbbed with dull fire after hours of unyielding rigor under Sensei’s watch.

”Because those lines give me speed,” I grunted harshly, adjusting my footing on the damp basalt without hiding my slight irritation. ”When I push mana through my conduits, my reaction time drops by half. I can absorb a hit without breaking bones and counter immediately. Logically speaking, to me it’s pure mathematics and reaction time optimization. Why should I give that up when it gives me physical dominance in combat?”

”That is pure foolishness, laziness, and wastefulness,” the Master cut in mercilessly, making a minimal, almost imperceptible movement with his hand.

The bamboo staff whistled through the air with terrifying speed. I reacted instinctively. I wanted to side-step, but in that same fraction of a millisecond, my conduits sparked blue, and a river of mana surged through the channels to boost the power in my legs. The Master had been waiting for exactly that. The shift in the staff’s trajectory was instantaneous and unforgiving. The dry crack of the strike against my right shoulder echoed across the training field. My arm went limp, and I hissed through clenched teeth.

”Conduits are not muscles, you idiot,” the old man repeated, slowly circling me like a predator around wounded prey. ”They are merely lines. Copper pipes through which the river of your power flows. When you use them to flex and harden your physical frame, it’s like a blacksmith trying to strike a heavy hammer against an anvil using a flaccid leather water hose instead of his own solid arm. You consume precious calories, burn fuel in your biological engine, and on top of that, you light up in the dark like a torch for anyone with a shred of energy perception. An opponent with minimal mystical awareness will feel the tension in your conduits a fraction of a second before you even move. They will read your intention like an open, primitive book.”

The old man stopped, and the tip of his bamboo staff lightly yet firmly touched my chest, right where the main astral energy channels of my Vessel branched out.

”True economy is the craft of disorder. You are meant to neutralize the enemy without allowing a single drop of tension to appear in your conduits. Your internal engine must remain cold, silent, and entirely dead to the opponent’s senses. You are to move exclusively using bones, tendons, and the natural weight of your skeleton. When you attack without mana flowing through your conduits, there is no resistance in your body, no friction. Your strike becomes invisible to mystical senses, and the enemy collapses under their own weight before they even register they were touched.”

I listened to his words attentively. My analytical mind and Battle IQ immediately began breaking this theory down to first principles. Practically speaking, Sensei was absolutely right. Forcing mana into the conduits with every micro-movement created friction, which more sensitive enemy sensors would pick up.

”Alright, Master,” I said after a moment, relaxing my shoulders and letting my arms hang completely limp. ”Empty lines. Cold engine. How do I implement this in practice?”

Sensei smiled slightly under his breath, though his Tiger’s Eye eyes remained cold. He turned and walked toward the edge of the clearing, where a massive oak cage reinforced with iron bands stood against a wall of dense spruce forest. Inside the cage, something was thrashing heavily and dully against the wooden planks.

”I will show you,” the old man replied.

He pulled back a thick iron latch and pushed the cage door open. From the dark interior leaped an agile, two-meter beast—a mutated forest lizard with thick, scaly skin the color of rotten green and razor-sharp claws. The creature sniffed the damp air, and its vertical yellow eyes immediately locked onto my barefoot silhouette. The beast let out a guttural roar, thick saliva dripped from its jaws, and a fine mist of toxic vapor hissed from its spine.

”Your test for today, kid,” the old man said, stepping back to a safe distance and leaning on his bamboo. ”You are to incapacitate this beast using your Inertia Blockade. Three precise strikes to vital points. If I sense even the smallest spark of energy flowing through your conduits, or if you try to use brute physical force to wrestle this colossus, you fail. And the punishment will be hauling basalt blocks from the river to the very top of the hill until sunset. Show me the craft and precision of a blacksmith, not butcher-like clumsiness.”

I swallowed hard. The rule was strict: zero mana, zero sapphire discharges, empty channels. I entered the state of ”White Room”—a complete quietude and extinguishing of the energy lines in my chest. My conduits became cold, dead, and invisible to any senses.

The lizard pounced. A hundred and fifty kilograms of living meat and scales sliced through the fog at terrifying speed.

I didn’t flex a single muscle. Instead of building a rigid block or triggering a sapphire booster, I used pure skeletal biomechanics. I took a diagonal step—a fractional hip rotation and a lowering of my center of gravity. The beast’s massive claws sliced through the fog a millimeter from my chest, plunging into empty air.

First point: Shoulder plexus.

As the monster passed by at full momentum, my right hand—completely relaxed, cold, and devoid of mana—shot directly into the gap between the scales beneath its left scapular articulation. I didn’t strike with a swing. It was a short, point-blank pressure from my knuckles.

Tap.

The strike into the beast’s neural pipeline acted like pulling a pin. The lizard’s front left leg instantly went limp. The monster lost its physical symmetry and, with a loud snap of its jaws, plowed headfirst into the wet moss, losing all momentum.

The beast thrashed furiously, trying to pivot on its tail and tear my stomach open with its right claws.

Second point: Hamstring tendon.

Instead of leaping back, I slid under its attack arc using the flexible arch of my spine. My bare feet turned smoothly on the moss. My extended index and middle fingers struck with a perfect angle into the soft hollow of its right hock joint.

Tap.

The lizard’s hind leg helplessly refused to obey. The blocked motor pathway paralyzed the lower portion of its body. The creature fell heavily onto its side, wheezing toxic mist and thrashing its tail against the ground, helpless as an overturned crate.

Third point: Base of the neck.

I took one calm step forward. Standing over the writhing beast, I bent down and, without using a single percent of magic, tapped my hard thumb knuckle into the gap between the first and second cervical vertebrae.

Tap.

The lizard went dark in a fraction of a second. Its vertical pupils dilated, its paws dropped limply onto the moss, and its chest settled into a measured, slow rhythm of deep, paralytic sleep. No blood, no torn armor, no noise, and zero consumed mana.

In the fog standing over the training field, a ringing silence descended.

I dusted the specks of moss from my hands and straightened my back with a deep, clean exhale. I looked at Sensei.

The old man stood leaning on his bamboo staff. He blew a thick cloud of smoke from his wooden pipe, and in his deep Tiger’s Eye eyes, a rare, genuine acknowledgment flashed.

”Empty lines, cold engine, and surgical precision,” the old man muttered. ”You’ve made a pure craft out of it, kid. Your Inertia Blockade works flawlessly on biological targets.”

”Practically speaking, Master,” I replied with a slight, predatory smile, sliding my hands into the pockets of my leather trousers. ”Why waste energy breaking armor and making noise in the forest when you can simply turn off the target with one click?”

”Because this is only the beginning,” the old man remarked dryly, stowing his pipe. ”Today you proved you can conserve fuel. Tonight by the fire, we will talk about what to do when you have to fight someone who isn’t a mindless beast, but a predator aware of your every step.”

Late that evening in the shelter by the crackling fire, I leaned against a basalt boulder, drinking a hot, bitter herbal brew. My body throbbed with pain after the day’s rigor, but my mind hummed with icy, predatory satisfaction. I had mastered the Inertia Blockade. I had gained a weapon that was sterile, noiseless, and elusive.

I knew that under my absence, the girls in the manor outside Crossgard held a firm grip on logistics, while Shnee and Karys cleared the wild dungeons. And when my training concluded and I returned to my family as an indestructible monolith... this world would learn what true, pragmatic dominance really meant.

As I sat on the hard boulder, taking a long gulp of the scalding brew, an engineering calculation instantly took shape in my mind. The Inertia Blockade and the Quick Style were no longer distant theoretical models or Earthly fiction. They were becoming hard, optimized software wired directly into my own biology, which—when paired with Lynx Footwork and KAI Sonar—rendered me completely elusive.

Sensei looked at me through the swirling clouds of pipe smoke, and the doubt in his Tiger’s Eye gaze had vanished. He knew this training ground was no longer a place for punishing my mistakes; it had turned into a sterile workshop from which I emerged every single day as a predator a tier above.
