My Perfect Isekai: Pragmatic Protagonist, Progression Fantasy and Strategy

The monumental obsidian gates of Crossgard rose seventy meters into the soot-choked sky, framed by massive, steam-hissing hydraulic arches and heavy runic iron reinforcements. Unlike the quiet, provincial border post of Oakhaven, the metropolis of Crossgard was a sprawling, industrial leviathan—a city built on the sweat of tens of thousands of laborers, the ruthless ambition of merchant lords, and the blood of mercenary guilds striving to conquer the lower floors of the subterranean dungeon.

Steam pipes groaned along the soot-stained basalt walls, venting scalding vapor into the crisp mountain air with rhythmic, mechanical thuds. Dense crowds of heavily armored adventurers, merchant convoys loaded with raw mana ore, and cloaked envoys navigated the wide cobblestone thoroughfares. High above, suspended iron walkways connected towering stone spires, while heavy mana-driven cargo lifts hummed as they hauled tons of raw materials from the lower warehouse districts to the upper city estates.

”Wizyta w stolicy, szefie!” Kaede’s cheerful, high-pitched ping echoed in my left ear in our native Polish operational cipher, her small spider form shifting comfortably beneath my collar. ”Paczka cwaniaków na dziesiątej! Dwa krawaciaki z Gildii Żelaza i trzech szpiegów z Senatu Kupieckiego! Szacują twój pancerz i sakwę. Myślą, że jesteś prowincjonalnym wieśniakiem z obrzeży, którego można skroić na wejściowym podatku!”

I didn’t bother slowing my stride. My dłoń remained casually tucked into the deep pocket of my long black coat. Beside me, Shnee glided with silent, predatory grace, her hand resting lightly on the hilt of her Celestial Silver rapier. Her piercing blue eyes scanned the crowded avenue with cold, mechanical detachment, calculating lines of sight and structural choke points with effortless precision.

Before we could clear the main archway of the Iron District, three heavily armored men in polished grey plate—adorned with the cog-and-hammer emblem of the Iron Guild—stepped directly into our path. Behind them stood two sharply dressed clerks holding leather-bound ledgers, brass scales, and official seal stamps.

”Halt, traveler,” the lead Iron Guild representative declared, stepping forward with an authoritative raise of his armored gauntlet. His voice was laced with the practiced pomposity of a bureaucrat accustomed to unearned deference and fear. ”All independent combatants entering Crossgard with high-grade dungeon materials must register with the Iron Guild registry at the perimeter gate. Unaffiliated squads operating without an official guild license are subject to a mandatory thirty-percent tariff on all unrefined cores, runic metals, and precious ores.”

”Trzydzieści procent?!” Kaede sputtered in outrage over our private channel, her mandibles clicking against my neck. ”Ale chamski przekręt! Cwaniaczki chcą podatek od naszego urobku za samo przekroczenie bramy! Szefie, dajesz im czysty wyrok i krotki opis fizyki ich własnego upadku!”

I stopped two paces away from the representative. I didn’t raise my voice, nor did I draw a weapon or shift my stance. Instead, I simply unbuckled a fraction of a percent of the mental valve suppressing my internal furnace.

Deep within my chest, the gold-and-sapphire reactor of my Pyrite Core hummed with silent, terrifying density. A subtle, light-warping aura of pure gravitational pressure expanded in a three-meter radius around my boots.

The cobblestones beneath the clerk’s polished leather boots groaned under the sudden, artificial increase in local gravity. The air temperature within the sphere plunged precipitously, freezing the scalding steam rising from the nearby drainage grates into instant, diamond-hard frost. The lead guildsman stumbled backward, his face draining of color as his knees buckled under the invisible, crushing weight that pressed down on his shoulders like a falling granite slab.

”You are mistaken,” I said, my voice smooth, calm, and devoid of emotion. ”I am not registering with your guild. And I do not pay tariffs to middle-men.”

”T-This is illegal under city ordinance!” the clerk stammered, his hands trembling violently as his quill snapped in half under the ambient structural pressure. ”The Merchant Senate and the Iron Guild hold exclusive jurisdiction over the Iron District property, trade licensing, and ore refining!”

”Then tell your Senate and your Guild Masters that if they wish to collect a fee from me, they are welcome to send their Guild Master in person,” I replied, stepping past him without giving him another glance. ”Assuming he wishes to risk the exact same fate as Count Kaelar’s perimeter guards in the Iron Gorge.”

The representative’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated horror. The news of the Iron Gorge massacre and the total destruction of Kaelar’s siege artillery had clearly already reached the city’s covert intelligence networks. He froze, his jaw working silently, unable to utter another word of protest as we walked past his trembling squad and merged effortlessly into the sprawling crowds of the Iron District.

”To było czyste sprowadzenie do pionu, szefie!” Kaede cackled with glee over our private channel. ”Koleś o mały włos nie popuścił w te swoje polerowane portki! Pusty postrach, zero pojęcia z kim tańczą i zero szans na pobór opłat!”

This novel’s true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there.

We navigated the winding, soot-blackened streets of the Iron District, bypassing the crowded commercial plazas, noisy taverns, and ostentatious guild halls. I had no intention of renting a room in an inn or establishing a temporary camp subject to municipal harassment, local guild inspections, or covert spying. What we needed was a permanent, heavily fortified stronghold—a sovereign operational base with direct structural access to the city’s subterranean leyline network.

After twenty minutes of precise navigation through the industrial sectors, we arrived at the eastern perimeter of the Iron District, where the city met the sheer basalt cliffs overlooking the lower industrial ravines. Standing before us was a massive, derelict industrial complex—a sprawling, ancient stone refinery built over a century ago during the first dungeon excavation era.

The structure was built like an impenetrable fortress: three-meter-thick granite walls reinforced with heavy iron bracing, high narrow slit windows designed for defense, and a massive central chimney that reached fifty meters into the soot-stained sky. Huge brass-reinforced iron gates stood rusted on their hinges, while the surrounding courtyard was overgrown with dry mountain weeds and strewn with abandoned piles of iron slag and weathered stone blocks.

”Duszarnia!” Kaede identified the site immediately, reading the property records retrieved from our earlier transaction files. ”Stara duszarnia i rafineria rudy z pierwszego okresu wykopalisk!

”The structure is sound,” Shnee remarked softly, stepping onto the cracked stone flags of the courtyard and running a gloved hand along the ancient granite wall. ”The stone has absorbed decades of residual heat, but the structural alignment remains undisturbed. The foundation is anchored directly into the bedrock. With proper slime reinforcement and kinetic damping, this place will withstand any siege.”

Standing near the rusted main entrance was a nervous, elderly municipal magistrate in a faded velvet robe, flanked by two armed city guards holding heavyhalberds. He had been waiting for us after Silas’s covert messengers arranged the private land transfer meeting earlier that morning.

”Ah... Lord Dave?” the magistrate asked cautiously, bowing nervously as he wiped cold sweat from his forehead with a silk handkerchief. ”I... I was informed by Master Silas that you wished to acquire the deed to the Old Iron Foundry. However, I must warn you... the property has been condemned for decades. The lower basements connect directly to unstable subterranean fissures. No guild has been able to secure the foundations or clear the lower levels!”

”I am not a guild,” I replied calmly. ”What is the price for the deed and absolute freehold rights?”

”The Merchant Senate set the price at fifty thousand gold pieces to clear the historic debt, back taxes, and municipal liability,” the magistrate stammered, clearly expecting us to negotiate, demand a discount, or turn back. ”An astronomical sum for a ruined, condemned structure...”

Instead of wasting breath on haggling, I unbuckled a heavy leather pouch from my belt and tossed it onto the stone table between us.

The pouch struck the granite with a heavy, metallic thud, spilling its contents across the table. Dozens of pristine, high-density purple cores, flawless sapphire gems, and refined blocks of pure dungeon silver gleamed brightly in the dull daylight—each core radiating a stable, immense mana signature that made the magistrate’s breath catch in his throat.

”This is worth twice the required sum,” I stated coldly. ”Issue the freehold deed. Unconditional, permanent ownership with full sovereign immunity within these walls.”

The magistrate stared at the pile of high-grade dungeon loot with wide, disbelieving eyes. His hands shook violently as he hastily drew up the parchment deed, stamped it with the heavy brass seal of the Crossgard Municipal Registrar, and handed it over alongside the heavy iron master key.

”T-The property is yours, Lord Dave!” the magistrate squeaked, bowing repeatedly as his guards quickly swept the precious cores into their secure chest. ”The Iron District registrar will record your absolute title immediately! No municipal inspector will disturb you!”

As the magistrate and his guards hurried away toward the city center, I stepped through the rusted iron gates and into the grand courtyard of our new home.

”Duszarnia jest nasza!” Kaede cheered, leaping from my shoulder and skittering along the high granite wall to deploy her tactical sensory threads. ”Szefie, to jest gigantyczny kloc! Trzy poziomy pod ziemią, przemysłowy piec, bezpośredni dostęp do żyły many i osłonięty dziedziniec! Możemy tu postawić własną kuźnię, laboratorium i bariery śluzowe!”

”First priority,” I said, stepping into the dusty, vaulted central hall where ancient iron cranes hung from the rafters. ”Establish a closed kinetic perimeter. We seal every entrance, deploy the Sapphire Slime web across the foundation, and stabilize the lower leyline node. My Vessel will handle the energy integration.”

I unbuckled my black coat, letting my Pyrite Core hum with a deep, golden-blue light that echoed off the ancient granite walls. Shnee drew her Celestial Silver rapier, a quiet, sharp smile blooming on her face as her frost aura hummed in response.

”Understood, Dave,” she whispered. ”Our fortress begins here.”

With a flick of my wrist, I released a dense, translucent stream of Sapphire Slime from my palm. The blue slime expanded rapidly upon contact with the flagstones, splitting into hundreds of fine, monomolecular tendrils that slithered along the floor, up the granite pillars, and into the cracked masonry. Within seconds, the bio-kinetic webbing mapped the entire three-story complex, sealing structural fissures, reinforcing weak iron beams, and dampening ambient vibrations.

”Slime perimeter deployed and synchronized, boss!” Kaede reported proudly, her eyes flashing green as her tactical interface integrated with the slime network. ”Every door, chimney, and ventilation shaft is under active sonar surveillance. Lower basement level three is sealed, and the subterranean leyline branch is locked. If any guild scout or syndicate assassin tries to peek inside, they’ll hit a kinetic brick wall before they even reach the courtyard!”

Shnee walked the perimeter of the central hall, her light steps making no sound against the slime-coated stone. She paused by the massive iron hearth of the primary furnace, placing her hand on the ancient damper lever. ”The draft channels are clear,” she noted, turning back to me with a calm, approving nod. ”We can ignite the furnace whenever you are ready, Dave. This place is no longer a ruin. It is ours.”
