My Perfect Isekai: Pragmatic Protagonist, Progression Fantasy and Strategy

The morning sun over the Oakhaven valley did not bring warmth; it cast long, sharp shadows across the rugged trade road leading north toward the mountain pass. The air in Iron Gorge was crisp, carrying the scent of damp pine, ozone, and distant volcanic ash. Iron Gorge was a natural choke point—a narrow, two-hundred-meter fissure carved through sheer granite cliffs, serving as the sole overland artery between the backwater territory of Oakhaven and the bustling, high-density metropolis of Crossgard.

I walked along the rutted dirt road with loose, measured strides, my hands comfortably tucked into the deep pockets of my black coat. Beside me, Shnee glided with silent, feline poise, her Celestial Silver rapier resting casually at her waist. Atop my left pauldron, Kaede sat crouched in her compact, sapphire-slime spider form, her multi-faceted eyes scanning the cliffside perimeters with methodical precision. My modernized Vessel operated with the quiet, effortless hum of a perfectly tuned engine, the gold-sapphire Pyrite Core within my chest maintaining a steady, low-frequency pulse.

”Tactical radar active, boss!” Kaede’s cheerful, high-pitched ping echoed in my left ear in our native Polish operational cipher. ”Paczka puszkarzy w wąwozie! Szefie, Kaelar wstawił tam cały garnizon! Dwieście puszkarzy na dole, czterdziestu kuszników na półkach skalnych, a na samej górze zamontowali trzy wielkie balisty oblężnicze z kranówką ruńską! Mówią przez tubę, że nie przejdziemy!”

I didn’t slow my pace by a fraction of a kilometer per hour. My analytical perception mapped the entire ambush before we even crossed the outer threshold of the gorge. Two hundred heavily armored foot soldiers formed a dense wall of tower shields and three-meter pikes, completely blocking the narrowest bottleneck of the pass. Behind their iron wall, rows of crossbowmen held heavy, mechanical cranks at full tension. High above them, anchored into the granite ledges on steel tripods, sat three massive siege ballistas—four-meter engines of destruction armed with enchanted, iron-shod bolts thick as telegraph poles.

”They believe the geographical constriction grants them an absolute tactical advantage,” Shnee noted softly, her azure eyes reflecting the cold glare of the morning sun. ”A narrow funnel limits maneuverability. Standard military doctrine dictates that a smaller force caught in a gorge must either retreat or suffer total attrition.”

”Standard doctrine assumes both sides operate within the same physical framework,” I replied calmly, my voice steady and undisturbed. ”They built a funnel. All they did was eliminate the need for me to hunt them down individually. To push twice as much rushing force through a narrower channel, you don’t fight the walls—you simply increase the pressure at the nozzle. When fluid dynamics meet structural resistance, the barrier gives way first.”

As we rounded the final bend, the commander of Kaelar’s advance guard stepped onto a wooden barricade. He was a broad, scar-faced veteran clad in polished plate armor stamped with Count Kaelar’s crimson wolf crest. He raised a steel-reinforced megaphone to his mouth, his voice booming through the canyon like hollow thunder.

”Halt, outlaw!” the commander roared, his eyes wide with a mixture of forced bravado and deep-seated terror. ”By order of Count Kaelar, Suzerain of the Iron Border, this pass is sealed! You stand accused of high treason, the destruction of ducal property, and the murder of royal guards! Lay down your weapons and surrender your cores, or we will turn this gorge into your mass grave!”

”O kurwa, ale ten kloc ma gadane!” Kaede chirped from my shoulder, shaking her tiny spider legs in amusement.

I didn’t bother responding to the commander’s ultimatum. I simply took another step forward, crossing the hundred-meter boundary line with complete nonchalance.

”Fire!” the commander screamed, his voice cracking with utter desperation. ”Release the ballistas! Flatten them into the dirt!”

The heavy steel levers on the cliffside platforms dropped simultaneously with a resounding metallic clang. The three siege ballistas released their tension with deafening thuds that vibrated through the canyon walls. Three massive, four-meter enchanted bolts ripped through the air at supersonic velocity, trailing plumes of crackling red flame, compressed sonic waves, and pressurized air. The projectiles were engineered to punch through dragon hide and siege fortresses, calculated to pulverize anything in their trajectory into liquid gore.

Shnee didn’t even draw her weapon. She simply took half a step back, trusting my spatial calculations implicitly.

I raised my right hand from my coat pocket without breaking my stride. I didn’t construct a massive, inefficient barrier of stone or force. Instead, I activated my gold-sapphire Pyrite Core, unbuckling a precise mental valve within my energy pathways. A dense, light-absorbing sphere of kinetic-slime field erupted around us, spinning at ninety thousand revolutions per minute with an angled deflection profile of thirty-five degrees.

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it’s taken without the author’s consent. Report it.

The three massive siege bolts struck the spinning, sapphire-black surface simultaneously.

THWACK-THWACK-THWACK!

The immense kinetic energy of the dragon-slaying bolts did not penetrate the barrier. The zero-friction profile of the sapphire slime instantly converted their forward momentum into lateral centrifugal force. The three four-meter iron bolts slid harmlessly along the curved boundary of the sphere, their enchanted tips sparking violently before snapping in half like dry twigs and bouncing uselessly into the dirt.

The gorge fell into a dead, suffocating silence. The two hundred foot soldiers behind the barricade froze, their hands trembling so violently that their pikes clattered against their iron breastplates.

”Impossible...” the commander stammered, dropping his megaphone into the dust. ”That... that was three thousand tons of impact force! What kind of monster are you?!”

”Czternasto-procentowe obciążenie reaktora, szefie!” Kaede reported with a cackle. ”Zero strat w materiale! Tarcza kinetyczna pochłonęła energię cieplną i zamieniła ją w zwykły szum! A teraz ci na półkach skalnych próbują przeładować te swoje krowy!”

”They don’t get a second shot,” I said softly.

I stepped forward, closing the fifty-meter distance in a fraction of a second. I didn’t draw a blade or cast a spell. I simply channeled a concentrated charge of gold-sapphire current directly from my Pyrite Core into the soles of my boots. As my foot planted onto the solid granite floor of the gorge, I unleashed a localized, high-frequency kinetic shockwave straight down into the bedrock.

BOOM!

The entire canyon floor vibrated violently. A localized earthquake rippled through the granite, channeling pure kinetic vibration directly up the cliff faces into the tripod anchors of the three siege ballistas. My harmonic frequency matched the natural resonance of the stone ledges, causing the structural bonds within the granite to sheer at the atomic level.

High above us, the heavy wooden and iron frameworks of the three siege engines disintegrated instantly. The four-meter beams snapped, the steel winches sheared apart, and the three multi-ton ballistas exploded into a shower of splinters, iron bolts, and smoldering debris, tumbling off the cliffs and crashing into the canyon floor behind the enemy barricade.

CRASH!

The destruction of their heavy artillery broke the remaining morale of Kaelar’s garrison in a single, terrifying second.

”The ballistas... they broke the ballistas with a single step!” a crossbowman screamed, dropping his weapon and scrambling frantically up the rocks.

”Run! He’s not human! The Devil of Oakhaven is here! He turned three siege engines to dust!”

”Szefie! Puszkarze wieją!” Kaede cheered, doing a little dance on my shoulder. ”Dwieście sztuk luda rzuca pancerze, piki i tarcze i spieprza w stronę Crossgardu! Ten ich dowódca właśnie zesrał się w swoją wypolerowaną zbroję i stoi jak kołek!”

The two hundred foot soldiers threw down their tower shields, pikes, and heavy crossbows, trampling their own wooden barricade in a frantic, disorganized stampede to escape the narrow gorge. Within less than thirty seconds, the two-hundred-meter bottleneck was completely cleared of living opposition, leaving behind only a mountain of abandoned weapons, shattered armor, and the smoldering debris of the three siege engines.

The scar-faced commander stood alone beside the ruined barricade, his sword half-drawn, his knees shaking so violently he could barely maintain his footing.

I stopped two paces in front of him, my hands returning comfortably to my coat pockets. My eyes burned with a steady, gold-sapphire light, the quiet hum of my Pyrite Core filling the air with an oppressive, unyielding pressure.

”Y-you...” the commander whispered, his lips pale as ash. ”Count Kaelar... he has five thousand men in Crossgard... an entire army... three high-ranking guilds... you can’t fight an entire metropolis...”

”Tell Kaelar that his gorge is open,” I said, my voice cold, calm, and utterly devoid of mercy. ”Tell him that if he wants to collect his tax, he better come deliver the bill himself. And tell him that the next time he sends men into my path, I won’t limit my kinetic shockwaves to the artillery.”

I didn’t wait for his answer. I stepped past him, my black coat snapping in the mountain wind as Shnee and Kaede followed beside me. Behind us, the commander collapsed onto his knees in the dirt, completely broken in body and spirit.

Ahead of us, emerging from the mist at the far end of the Iron Gorge, the colossal stone spires, aqueducts, and iron-studded ramparts of Crossgard stretched across the horizon under the morning sun. The great city loomed like a titan of granite and iron, its massive gates open to the northern trade routes.

”Radary czyste, szefie!” Kaede pinged merrily as we crossed the threshold of the pass. ”Szlakiem prosto do miasta! Czas kupić działkę i wybudować naszą suwerenną bazę, bo te śmierdzące gildie z Crossgardu już czekają na rozpiździel!”

”First we locate Silas’s contacts and secure a permanent workshop in the neutral district,” I replied, my gaze fixed on the soaring towers of the metropolis. ”Then we begin our systematic clearance of the lower floors. Crossgard thinks it controls the dungeon. Soon, they’ll realize the dungeon is merely our resource node.”

”A most logical progression,” Shnee added with a quiet, lethal smile, resting her hand on her rapier. ”The Suzerain’s reign extends wherever he steps.”

Shnee glanced back at the abandoned barricade with a cool, analytical assessment. ”The structural engineering of their defensive perimeter was fundamentally flawed,” she murmured, adjusting her rapier sheath. ”They relied on brute mass and geographical bottlenecking rather than energy distribution. Against standard infantry, three ballistas and two hundred guards would constitute an insurmountable wall. Against a Suzerain operating on Pyrite Core throughput, it was merely an obstruction of wooden scaffolding.”

”Precisely,” I agreed, feeling the steady, rhythmic pulse of my internal furnace. ”Human military doctrine in this world relies heavily on intimidation and legacy tactics. They build bigger walls because they cannot conceive of a force that bypassed the physics of structural density entirely. Once you understand the resonance frequency of granite and iron, a two-hundred-meter gorge is nothing more than an acoustic amplifier.”

Kaede chuckled softly from my pauldrons, her spider legs tapping a rhythmic beat against my black coat. ”A puszkarze myśleli, że nas zamkną w klatce! Szefie, ten dowódca pewnie biegnie teraz do Kaelara z pełnymi gatersami, mówiąc, że przybył czort z Oakhaven! Będzie niezła chryja w senacie Crossgardu!”

The road to the metropolis was wide open.
