My Perfect Isekai: Pragmatic Protagonist, Progression Fantasy and Strategy

The morning sun crept lazily through the dense, leaden clouds that shrouded the sky above the province of Oakhaven. A cold, crisp wind whipped the crowns of ancient oaks lining the muddy trail, and the distinct metallic tang of a recent summer storm still lingered in the air. The heavy iron rims of our new wagon rolled rhythmically through the deep, rutted mud of the forest road. The sturdy oak construction, which we had picked up just yesterday from the sleepy yet exceedingly submissive and terrified craftsmen of the Upper City, performed impeccably. The massive axles emitted no troubling squeaks, and the thick steel leaf springs, forged under Silas’s watchful, professional eye, smoothly and silently cushioned every bump and dip in the beaten track. The grey, dirty smoke from the spire burning out on the horizon slowly dissolved into the crisp morning air, while Oakhaven itself finally vanished behind the dense line of forest hills.

A stern, focused calm reigned in the back of our armored wagon. We sat on soft leather benches lined with thick woolen blankets, watching the passing landscape with complete, brazen chill. My internal furnace, residing in the Soul Sphere as a second-tier Pyrite Core, worked noiselessly and with uncanny, machine-like stability. Following the grueling isolation in the bedroom on the upper floor of the Gryphon, my mana weaves were perfectly anchored at thirty percent throughput. Energy no longer ruptured my motor channels; it flowed smoothly, gently distributing dense, blue-gold mana throughout my physical Vessel.

Beside me, Luthia and Elena reviewed Oakhaven promissory notes, trade deeds, and black-market financial maps with bureaucratic precision, meticulously calculating future capital. Luthia, our distinguished 222-year-old elf analyst, ran her slender fingers over the parchments, making inventories of assets that Silas was to monetize in Crossgard’s underground market. Elena, as former guard commander and chief of logistics for our base, oversaw the secure placement of the gold crates and high-tier core drops harvested from the depths. Mina hummed softly under her breath, adjusting the clasps and straps on the heavy supply containers she had personally prepared at dawn.

Beside me sat Shnee, resting her head against my collarbone. Her crystalline rapier of Celestial Silver rested against her thigh, ready for an immediate strike, though a quiet, profound satisfaction flickered in her diamond eyes. The white-haired assassin savored this moment of rest after conquering one hundred floors of subterranean hell, snuggling into my side as if to draw all the warmth in the world from my foundation.

On the other side of the wagon sat Karys. The Black Fenrirca moved stiffly in the new, clean clothes Elena had tailored for her before departure with refined precision. Her wolf ears twitched alertly at every sharper rustle of leaves in the thickets, and her amethyst eyes appraised the surroundings with the distrust of a wild predator that had worn anti-magic iron in a cramped slave-trader cage for long months. Karys was still adapting to a new reality where she was no longer merchandise for sale or hunted game, but the official Second Pillar of the manor.

When Elena pulled a clay bowl of warm, nourishing broth from a wicker basket and offered it to Karys with a gentle, dignified smile, the black wolf girl flinched sharply. The Black Fenrirca was unused to such selfless kindness and acceptance from other strong women. She froze instantly, her wild, distrustful nature hit with a massive lag. A delicate crimson blush bloomed on her cheeks, and she hastily turned her head away, staring at the black oak trunks passing beyond the wagon’s side, trying to hide her embarrassment.

From my ear, a small white ball slowly emerged. Kaede scurried down the fabric of my leather collar, landing softly on my pauldrons. Her tiny spider body glistened in the morning sun like a drop of morning dew.

”Man, it’s so boring here,” Kaede squeaked in our Polish operational cipher, staring into the forest thickets and waving her legs. ”No monsters, zero loot. Silas just huffs on that bench like an old tractor. When are we finally getting to Crossgard?”

I smirked softly under my breath, keeping my hands pushed deep into my black coat pockets.

”Have some patience, kid,” I replied fluently in Polish, which immediately triggered another massive lag in Karys.

The Black Fenrirca jerked, violently snapping her head toward me. Her amethyst eyes widened in complete disorientation. She heard that harsh, growling, and guttural dialect that sounded like the battle grunts of ancient predators. She knew full well that no local mage or translation system could decode it. To her, it was yet another incomprehensible mystery proving our absolute dominance over this world. She tried to catch at least one familiar word, but the hard, rough syllables struck her ears with complete, unearthly strangeness.

”The road will take a few more days,” I continued in Polish, ignoring her shock and narrowing my sapphire eyes. ”Silas has to save the horses, and the wagon is heavy. Besides, rushing isn’t pragmatic. Enjoy the sun until we crawl into the next dungeon.”

Shnee smiled softly. Though she didn’t understand a word of our Earth tongue, Kaede’s presence on my shoulder and the tone of my voice acted as a soothing balm. She rubbed her cheek against my collarbone. I slipped my left hand out of my coat pocket and slowly began running my fingers through her silky white hair.

Suddenly, the tranquil peace of the forest trail shattered like a glass bulb.

From the depths of the thick, dark woods, right in front of our wagon, a hideous chitinous screech erupted. A horrifying, high-pitched whistle of vibrations tore through the air as a mutated insect burst from the fern thickets.

It was a giant, armored dragonfly. Over two meters long, its chitinous carapace gleamed with a dirty red hue. Caustic slime dripped from its mouth, instantly burning deep holes into the grass. The monster barreled forward at lethal speed, aiming its mandibles directly at Silas’s head on the driver’s bench. The beast moved with uncanny agility, its multi-winged drive generating a loud, bass hum that instantly spooked our horses. The animals reared in their harnesses, nearly overturning the wagon into the deep ditch.

Silas shrieked in terror, instinctively covering his face. In a split second, Shnee tensed her muscles, her hand falling onto the hilt of her rapier, ready for an explosive leap. Karys likewise unsheathed her black claws, her amethyst eyes blazing with battle hunger.

Before either of them could leap from the wagon, however, I placed a hand on Shnee’s shoulder, giving her a brief signal to hold back. I yawned shortly, without removing my hands from my black coat pockets.

My Vessel pulsated with exceptional stability at thirty percent throughput of the Pyrite Core. Rather than shaping weapons or casting complex spells, I employed raw, absolute telekinesis at the level of pure biomechanics and momentum physics. I focused my intent on the rushing insect and generated a localized pressure wall directly in front of its maw.

The beast froze mid-air with a deafening, hollow crack of expanding air. The insect’s wings continued to vibrate frantically, but its multi-ton momentum was reduced to zero in a millisecond. The laws of physics bent under my will. The sight was surreal—a two-meter-long, massive monster hung motionless in a vacuum, helplessly thrashing the air as if it had struck an invisible diamond wall.

I clenched the fingers of my right hand into a fist.

A sickening, loud crunch of crushing chitin echoed through the clearing. My telekinesis squeezed the mutated insect from all sides simultaneously with terrifying pressure. The carapace ruptured, and yellow, acrid gore burst from the creature’s innards. With a swift, precise flick of my wrist, a single kinetic push hurled the mangled pulp deep into the forest bushes so as not to soil our new wagon. Yellow droplets of acid hissed on the fern leaves, but our new deck remained immaculately clean.

Kaede on my shoulder burst into a quiet, squeaky laugh.

”Man, that was pure gold,” the spider cackled in Polish. ”You turned it into mush without blinking an eye. That new wolf girl is about to forget how to breathe.”

Karys slowly turned her head toward me. Intellect and instinct fought for dominance in her mind. In her noble, amethyst eyes, there was no longer any defiance. There was only deep, reverent respect and the ultimate acceptance of the fact that her new family belonged to an unstoppable monolith.

With trembling hands, Silas grabbed the reins again, swallowing hard, and snapped them over the horses. Our armored wagon continued eastward. The road to Crossgard lay open before us, and I intended to take that new city entirely on my own hard terms.

The wide forest road stretched far ahead, vanishing into plumes of cold morning fog that slowly crept from the damp ditches. The wagon rolled rhythmically, the thud of horse hooves on the muddy ground echoing softly through the thicket. Silas took a deep drag from his pipe, releasing another cloud of smoke, and leaned back more comfortably on the bench, finally shaking off his fear. Our journey was just beginning, but I was certain that anyone who dared stand in our way would end up exactly like that mutated dragonfly. I rested my head comfortably, closing my eyes, as Shnee snuggled closer against me, while little Kaede silently slid back into my left ear to take a well-deserved nap. The new city awaited, and I intended to play it one hundred percent my way.
