Shattered Innocence: Transmigrated Into a Novel as an Extra

Chapter 1222: A Familiar path

The Aerial Society had drawn a genuine crowd for its closing presentation, which was more than most of the afternoon’s clubs could claim.

Having drifted away from the Martial students an hour ago, Lucavion had passed three societies that each believed their particular blend of ritual, dues, and attendance sheets amounted to a calling. He stopped here mostly because nothing about the northern grounds asked anything of him. No pledge form. No enthusiasm required. Just a demonstration and a crowd content to watch it.

That, he could manage.

The society had built its stage out of the slope itself: stepped timber platforms climbing toward the ridge, signal flags snapping hard enough in the wind to crack like knuckles, and a course of suspended hoops strung between poles that leaned with each gust.

Below it all waited a raked landing ring, scarred pale where riders had come down badly enough to matter. Packed three deep behind the boundary rope, the crowd craned for a better angle on people who were, at the moment, standing very still.

Elias Selcourt occupied the Council’s chair on the upper platform, present without presiding, an audience of one who watched more than he spoke. Alaric Vayne stood where the actual authority lived, between the flagpole and a document table stacked with charter pages, running the presentation with the flat competence of someone who would rather be flying than talking.

And Lucien stood on a chalk mark.

An ordinary one. The same square any petitioner would occupy, no closer to the table than the noble house representatives waiting their own turns beside him.

Lucavion’s gaze snagged on the chalk and stayed there.

It should have satisfied him. The Crown Prince, reduced to standing in line like everyone else, if only for an afternoon.

It didn’t.

’The Crown Prince, waiting his turn on a chalk mark. Either the world is ending, or he’s buying something.’

Tether snapping taut behind her, the first rider launched off the highest platform and cleared the nearest hoop to a ripple of applause Lucavion barely registered. Alaric was already speaking over it. Something about the north ridge, an elected flight marshal answerable to the society rather than its sponsors, tether sheds on the lower terrace that House Vayne wanted built before winter.

Procedural weight dressed up as a flight schedule.

Alaric pressed the clauses that still lacked seals, and Lucien’s answer carried without effort, pleasant and unbothered by the chalk mark beneath his boots. The charter’s wording would stand.

Nobody argued with that. Nobody, Lucavion noticed, had really expected to.

Lucavion’s eyes went from the chalk mark to the platform, from Alaric’s hand on the charter pages to the northern Circuit laid open on the document table, and the tug at the back of his memory finally found its name.

’Right. The flag Chapter. I skimmed the flag Chapter.’

This was the afternoon House Vayne stopped being neutral, and the Crown Prince picked up one of the earliest allies who mattered.

Another rider crossed the course, hoops rattling on their lines. Keeping his eyes on Alaric and Lucien, Lucavion could not yet say how much of this had been arranged in advance and how much had simply wandered in on a different schedule. The people standing inside the scene no longer looked quite as he remembered them.

’Today, apparently. Someone could have sent a calendar invite.’

Watching Alaric direct the presentation from beside the flagpole, Lucavion felt the memory surface the way most of them did now: sideways, in pieces.

House Vayne had been neutral. He had recalled that much already, and it still came with weight: a long neutrality that other houses had apparently learned to plan around. The Circuit came second. It mattered later, far more than anyone on this slope seemed to suspect, and he remembered it the way one remembers a staircase in the dark, by the certainty that more steps followed.

Lucien had gained House Vayne here; that much had come back whole. The form of it kept sliding away. A pledge, a seat, a title? Whether it came before the announcement or during it, he could not pin down.

He tried the launch platforms instead. The hoops, the flags, the crowd packed against the rope. Nothing. Just a rider crossing the course and the faint irritation of a novel that had been generous with names and stingy with scenery.

Then a line came back. It arrived without its speaker, without its room, only the sound of it.

”House Vayne was already moving under Lucien’s order from the start.”

Lucavion went still.

’Right... There was something like that.’

Back on the upper platform, the picture held this time. Alaric beside his charter pages, flat and efficient. Lucien on his chalk square, letting a whole House’s paperwork bend around a single sentence. The Aerial Society was only the room they had borrowed for it.

So this was the afternoon. The one where House Vayne set its neutrality down on a document table and walked out from under it, straight beneath Lucien’s banner.

Lucavion leaned his weight against the boundary rope, arms folded, and watched the platform in earnest, waiting to see whether the afternoon would follow the version he remembered.

Alaric worked through his objections in the cadence of a flight schedule, one item after the next, never raising his voice.

The flight marshal would be elected by the society and answerable to it alone. The society’s fund would remain under its own ledger, closed even to House Vayne’s auditors. Three amendments still carried no formal seals, which he mentioned with the mild disapproval of a man noticing a slack tether.

”The clauses will be amended before they bind any rider.”

”Then amend them. The charter’s wording is the better one. Enter it as it stands.”

Lucien accepted the marshal without a flicker. He accepted the fund the same way, and the unsealed amendments with a small nod, as though they were a courtesy owed to the paper. At no point did he mention whose name stood above the charter, or whose chalk mark was supposed to be closest to the table.

Around Lucavion, the students read it as intended. Royal composure, said one whisper. Generosity, said another, in a voice close to reverence.

Lucavion read it as accounting.

A prince could afford to lose an argument about tether sheds. Lucien surrendered nothing he needed, and every concession was one more thing Alaric got to defend in public, loudly, in front of every house present. By the time the real question arrived, it would look chosen instead of imposed.

And nobody conceded that smoothly without having settled something larger elsewhere. The essential agreement had been reached before today. Who had blinked first, and over what, Lucavion could not tell from the rope line.

Alaric lifted a sealed page from the document table. The wind seemed to notice, and the flags went quiet with it.

”House Vayne pledges its strength and service to Crown Prince Lucien. From this day forward, I shall act beneath his banner.”

For a moment nothing moved on the slope.

Then the crowd rearranged itself. The students went silent in patches, as a room does when a rumor is confirmed. Attendants slipped out of the rope line and hurried down toward the lower terraces, carrying the news ahead of themselves. Among the noble observers, heads began turning, each searching the crowd for their own House’s representative, and the expression they hoped to find there.

The significance had already left the platform.

Lucavion watched it go. The outcome matched what he remembered. The road there did not. Shattered Innocence had framed this scene as Lucien winning House Vayne. Nothing on this slope resembled winning. Alaric had held the platform, defended the society’s charter, set his own terms, and only after all of it had chosen Lucien, publicly, with the whole northern Circuit watching.

’That’s interesting. What caused the change?’

Lucavion examined the pledge from Alaric’s side of the table.

It was tempting to file him under another noble who had met Lucien and folded. The novel had liked that story. Nothing about Alaric, however, looked swept away.

That was a negotiation with a signature at the end.

From Alaric’s chair, it was also sensible. Neutrality had protected Vayne once. It stopped doing so the moment both royal factions began treating it as unclaimed territory, a border with no flag on it, waiting for whichever side planted one first. Choosing Lucien now bought the House proximity to imperial power, and it let Alaric state the terms of that relationship in front of every house that mattered.

Lucavion did not have to like who profited most. He also could not pretend Alaric had walked away empty-handed.

Both things could be true. They usually were.

Which left the part the tidy version could not explain.

’But why not do it the way it happened in the novel?’

Alaric had every reason to accept a courtship, a grand persuasion, the whole ceremony of being won. He had declined all of it and made the Crown Prince wait on a chalk mark instead.

Lucien had turned away from the platform, the pledge still hanging in the air, and lifted his eyes toward the Council’s chair. Toward Elias.

It lasted barely a breath, and, whatever else it held, it was not the look of a man who had just been handed a gift.

Lucavion followed it, and the thought that had been circling all afternoon stopped circling.

”Heh...”
