Shattered Innocence: Transmigrated Into a Novel as an Extra

Chapter 1214: An Interest Deferred

The noise reached him before the last step, forty conversations starting at once, as if a valve had opened somewhere behind him.

Elias did not look back at it. He had held the field for the length of a speech, and he had known the whole time what that would cost: attention taken had to be paid out somewhere, and here it would come out as crowding. The speech was the smallest part of a Clubs Day. The event began when he stopped talking, and it began everywhere at once.

’A handful of them had heard the part about asking questions. The rest had heard ”the field is open” and started walking.’

From the lower steps he read the grounds the way he would have read a ledger, looking for where they pooled and where they thinned. They were pooling at the eastern lane, where the Cartographers’ racks had crept past their chalk and first-years were funneling around them in a slow, stubborn knot. They were thinning at the north lawn, where a demonstration that should have drawn a crowd was drawing a handful of patient people and a presenter on his knees in the grass.

Past both, at opposite ends of the field, stood the two royal tables, neither of which appeared on any Council map. Nobody had drawn a line between them. Nobody needed to. The whole crowd bent a little around the space between, the way a room bends around two people who dislike one another, and the Council’s entire usefulness lay in keeping to the middle of it.

’By spring most of these first-years would be sitting at one table or the other. Today they were only walking past, pretending they hadn’t looked.’

A second-year met him on the steps with a slate held to his chest like a shield. He reported in ascending order of alarm, mildest first, which Elias had never corrected because it let him watch the boy’s face and know how bad the last item was before he heard it.

The eastern lane was clotting. The north lawn had slipped twenty minutes while its presenter hunted for a lens. One society had laid a table for thirty and found sixty standing in front of it. Elias answered each in a phrase — racks back to the chalk, let it run and shorten the next, borrow a second table from the Alchemists — and the second-year wrote it all down and went off at a half-jog, visibly glad to have been handed things he could carry.

Sera was waiting at the foot of the dais with her rod under one arm and chalk to the second knuckle. The line she had drawn across the approach had held through the whole speech on nothing but the fact that she had drawn it, and Elias noted, not for the first time, how little else his own authority stood on.

”Teams are out,” Sera said. ”Every lane’s staffed.”

That was the whole report. It was always the whole report. Sera sorted the day before it reached him, and what did arrive was whatever she could not settle without him, which rarely came to more than two things an hour. She had stopped asking permission for anything that did not require it in her first month on the Council, and Elias had made a point ever since of never giving her a reason to start again. He watched her weight instead. She stood on her back foot when something was wrong. Today it was forward, which meant the field could be left to her and he could spend his worry elsewhere.

Gregor came in from the other side with his chin tucked and his armband already crooked. Straight, the armband meant the world was as advertised; crooked meant Gregor had found something. It was not yet eleven.

”The east lane is going to become a shoving match,” Gregor said. ”Not now. It’s early. But some first-year will take an elbow, and then his elder brother turns up to have opinions about it, and I would like it noted that I said so before either of them existed.”

”Noted,” Elias said. ”It isn’t eleven yet.”

Gregor tugged his armband straight, which meant he had said what he came to say.

Elias had never known him to be wrong about where trouble would start. He was wrong perhaps half the time about whether it would finish, and he never mentioned that part. Elias trusted him for the first half and made a habit of not mentioning the second. Between the two of them he got the day from both ends: Gregor told him where it would break, and Sera told him whether it already had.

”If we move the first-year table to the north side,” Sera began, ”the lane opens up and we can—”

”That’s Lucavion.”

Gregor was looking past Sera’s shoulder at the notice-posts along the western tables. He said it the way he said anything he had been expecting, flat and faintly satisfied, a man who had found the fire before the smoke.

Sera turned. Elias looked a moment after her.

A first-year stood against the nearest post with one shoulder on the wood, reading. He was not skimming. He read line by line, the way a man reads a contract he means to sign or a receipt he means to dispute, and nobody had told him he could not. The first-years around him kept a curved gap wide enough to roll a cart through. No one had chalked it. Two Martial sashes slowed to look and then pretended they hadn’t; a girl in Magician colors steered her friend the long way round. If any of it reached him, he gave no sign, and in all the time Elias watched he did not once glance round to see who was watching, which was what everyone else on the field was doing, because that was what the day was for.

Elias realized he had stopped listening to the lane.

He had approved the wording on those sheets himself. Every one of them ended in the same four lines of membership terms, and he had never once watched anyone reach the bottom of them.

’That one is going to reach the bottom.’

”Whichever club signs him,” Gregor said, ”it’ll be incident forms by midterm, and I know whose desk they land on. Probably before midterm.” He tugged his armband a fraction crooked again.

Elias did not ask whose desk. Gregor would tell him at noon.

”Someone approaches him before the second bell,” Sera said. Her weight had shifted forward, the stance of someone recalculating a schedule in her head. ”What I can’t tell is whether the rest fall in behind or start bidding. His pairing is on every board in the Academy. Half these tables would like to be seen standing beside it.”

Thalor Draycott’s name, printed next to Lucavion’s in letters of the same size. Whoever had done the lettering had understood exactly what they were doing. It would stay up for weeks, and every one of those weeks the first-year at that post would be a little harder not to look at.

Attention, like water, found the low places in a field and pooled there, and the Council spent most of a Clubs Day keeping it moving. It was doing the opposite around that post. Elias could see it gathering.

Lucavion turned the notice over and read the back.

”Another problem the Academy hasn’t learned to file,” Gregor muttered.

’Selienne had already filed him. Under a heading she couldn’t name.’

”Selienne spoke to me about him.”

The words were out before Elias had decided to say them, which did not happen often. He had spent the morning keeping things off the record, and he had just put one on it. ”Before enrollment.”

Sera’s brows rose a fraction. Gregor’s came down, slowly, like a man lowering a heavy lid.

”Spoke about him how?” Sera said.

”She said he was— hard to place.”

It was the part that cost nothing. The rest was Selienne’s, and she had not lent it to him to spend.

Sera let the question go, the way she let go of anything Elias declined to pick up. Her weight went back to her heels. He noted it and did not comment. Gregor opened his mouth, looked at Elias’s face, and shut it again, which for Gregor was a considerable act of restraint.

”If he stops at a table,” Elias said, ”I would like to know which one before he finishes reading the sign.”

”Understood.” Sera was already writing on her slate.

Selienne had told it with the tea going cold at her elbow, lightly, the way she told anything she was still turning over.

”I offered him everything a first-year could reasonably want, and he didn’t counter. Not even to be polite.”

Elias had waited for the rest of it, the turn Selienne’s stories always took, where a refusal became a kind of compliment. The turn never came. She had looked at the door he had left by, and for once had nothing to add.

People who refused Selienne tended to do it carefully, with a reason and a door left ajar, because Selienne remembered who had. Elias had heard most of the reasons a talented student turned down a patron. Another patron already waiting in the wings. A higher price wanted. A house with strings of its own. Fear of who would be watching afterward. Each refusal came with a shape, a counter or a hesitation or a request for time. Lucavion’s had come with none. Whatever he had said no to, it had not been the terms.

’Then what had he refused?’

Selienne had turned her cup a quarter-turn on its saucer and said the last of it more quietly.

”I don’t think he wants anything I have to give. That’s the part I can’t place.”
