Shattered Innocence: Transmigrated Into a Novel as an Extra

Chapter 1211: The Name on the Board

”It is Thalor Draycott.”

When the name was revealed, the room took the name and ran.

”The First Seat,” a girl two benches down said, in the tone of someone reciting a ranking. ”Against a fifth-place Martial student. It’s hardly a match.”

”He’s the Draycott heir,” another voice added. ”The Tower’s chosen disciple, not merely a student of it.”

”And Magister Marisse is preparing him herself.” The boy from the row behind Elara had abandoned his page. ”Months of that. Nobody beats months of that.”

”Fifth is only where the written paper put him,” someone said, less certainly. ”Have you read his practical marks?” Nobody answered, and the argument closed over the gap.

”First Seat may not be why she chose him,” Selphine said quietly, her pen still. ”She has months to prepare him. She may be choosing for what he can become.”

”Give it until tonight,” Aurelian murmured. ”By the evening meal there will be three factions and a betting pool, and half of them will never have seen either of them fight. This is the kind people argue about until it happens, and then argue about afterward.”

Elara said nothing. She was working from different evidence than the room.

At Stormhaven she had given him the one stretch of time in which she could not defend herself, the long, exposed building of Frozen Dominion, and he had stood between her and the serpent as though the arrangement were obvious. He had read the openings her magic made before she finished making them. When the vortex closed, he had been the only one near enough to reach her.

The spar had told her the rest. When she fought by the book, he had taken her apart without visible effort. When she stopped, when the frost became something no textbook had drilled into him, he had been forced to adjust, lost his footing for a breath, and let her set Iceprints along him. Even then she had never held the encounter. What stayed with her was how quickly he changed once someone handed him something unfamiliar.

’And the months do not belong to Thalor alone.’ She had watched Lucavion turn half an explanation into working skill across a table in Private Room Four. Her expectation favored him, privately and without much strain. It did not need to be said aloud.

Thalor was the difficulty, and she was clear with herself about why. She had never fought him and had seen too little of his magic to name where it ended. Magister Marisse knew Lucavion’s examination record and had chosen Thalor regardless. The Tower thought him exceptional. He was a Draycott, and Elara knew, from someone she could never name in this room, what that house’s foundations could produce.

’Not empty prestige. Nor something to be measured by rumor.’

She allowed for what she had not seen in Thalor while still expecting Lucavion to find the answer. The gap lay in what she knew of Thalor, not in what she believed of Lucavion.

”Your Highness has been very quiet.” The girl from the windows had turned on her bench, her expression pleasant and open. ”You know them both better than any of us do. Which one do you think will win?”

The room turned toward the third tier with the slight delay of people who wished to be seen not staring.

Nearly everyone present knew some part of it. Thalor Draycott had once been expected to marry her. She had stood up for Lucavion at the Entrance Banquet, and Lucavion had later put himself between her and Thalor over something no one had explained in public. Nobody knew all of it. Enough of them knew enough.

Priscilla did not answer at once. She laid her stylus parallel to her notes, a small, exact movement, and Elara read the pause as arithmetic, not embarrassment. She was counting which words could be taken from her.

”I cannot name a winner,” Priscilla said. ”Not honestly.” Her voice carried without being raised. ”If they met today, Thalor Draycott would hold the broader formal training and greater resources behind it. But the Exhibition is months away. Magister Marisse’s preparation and Lucavion’s capacity to improve both make any statement about today unreliable. I would add only two things. Thalor has never approached the same problem the same way twice once he has had time to study it. And those who concluded something about Lucavion early have generally had to revise it.”

She offered no preference. Elara noted that too.

”How admirably careful, Your Highness.” The girl from the windows smiled as she said it. ”One might almost think you meant to spare Lucavion an unflattering forecast. Or to spare yourself the trouble of praising the Draycott heir. I intend no offense, of course. It is only that a princess who keeps both doors open must find it very convenient to know two gentlemen so well.”

The boy beside her laughed, low, and shook his head as if in gentle apology. ”Nobody could take offense at a question.”

”I was asked who would win,” Priscilla said. ”I said the information does not support certainty.” She did not look at the boy. ”If that sounds like a position, it is only the one the question left me.”

Her tone did not change. The girl had wanted a flush or a declaration, and there was nothing on the third tier to take hold of. Yet the silence afterward did nothing for Priscilla either. Students nearby discovered urgent business with their pens. Whoever answered her now would be answering inside it.

Elara understood the construction then. ’It was never asking for her judgment. Every answer would have been turned into a verdict on her loyalties, her broken engagement, or Lucavion.’ The corridor had been louder than this. This was quieter, and it depended on the same thing: that everyone else would watch until Priscilla stood alone inside it.

She did not mean to be one of them again. But she would not speak for her, either. Priscilla had answered on her own, and a defense now would make her look as though she needed one.

There was another reason, and it was not guilt. Priscilla had just said the first thing anyone in this room had said about Thalor Draycott that was not rumor.

”Your Highness.” Elara waited until she had the third tier’s attention, and no one else’s. ”You said he does not approach the same problem the same way twice once he has had time to study it. What does preparation let him do that his present ranking does not already show?”

Priscilla turned toward her. For the first time since the question had been put, someone was not waiting for her to fail. She looked at Elara a moment, and seemed to recognize that the question was real.

Priscilla studied her a moment longer than the question needed. If she suspected it had been placed rather than asked, she gave no sign of it, and Elara offered none.

”Thalor does not learn an opponent’s techniques,” Priscilla said. ”People assume that, and it is the least of it. He studies what the opponent depends upon. How they gather their mana. Which response they consider the safest. What they need in place before they commit to an attack. Which assumptions hold across every technique they own.” She turned her stylus over once. ”Then he builds the encounter around those habits. He does not need to remove your options. He only needs your preferred ones to lead somewhere he has already been.”

”That does not sound like much,” someone said from the back.

”It is not, until you are standing in it.” Something dry moved at the edge of her voice. ”He dislikes solving the same problem twice. Once he understands why an answer worked, he changes the next problem so that the answer is no longer enough.”

’Not new techniques. A narrower room.’ Elara held the thought without moving.

”Does that work on Lucavion?” A boy near the front had turned around fully. ”He does not fight like anyone. Would preparation even catch him?”

”I cannot say.” Priscilla did not soften it. ”I have not trained with him, and I do not know the structure of what he does. What I have seen in public suggests he is most dangerous when a thing leaves its expected course. He does not require the original plan to survive.”

”So Thalor wants the fight decided before it starts,” the boy said slowly, ”and Lucavion wants to reach the place where the plan no longer describes what is happening.”

”That is a fair way to put it.”

Selphine’s pen finally moved. ”Magister Marisse can prepare him for what the Academy understands of Lucavion. But the Academy cannot classify most of what he does. What is there to prepare for?”

”Which Lucavion?” Aurelian said. ”The one here now is not the one who will stand there in a few months. Preparing for him means guessing which version arrives.”

”Improvisation is still made of habits, Your Highness.” It was the boy from behind Elara this time, disagreeing without heat. ”Give Thalor enough time and he will find those as well.”

”He might,” Priscilla said. ”I would not tell him it is impossible.”

For the moment, the questions reaching the third tier concerned Priscilla’s judgment rather than her history. Elara let the conversation carry itself. She had made the opening. What kept it open was Priscilla’s own knowledge, and the small, private satisfaction of that did not reach her face.

”You are all making this too complicated.” A student at the center of the second tier spoke with the ease of someone who assumed agreement. ”Lucavion is a Martial Block swordsman with half a magical education. Thalor is First Seat, with the Tower behind him, and now Magister Marisse. Adaptability is a fine thing, but it cannot cover that gap forever.”

Several people nodded. It was plausible enough to be comfortable.

”If that were true,” a voice said from the doorway, ”I would have refused the offer.”

Thalor Draycott stood beneath the arch.
