Shattered Innocence: Transmigrated Into a Novel as an Extra

Chapter 1218: A Courteous Invitation

By the third bell the day had begun to balance, and Elias, who distrusted anything that balanced without being audited, audited it anyway.

Crossing the upper terrace with Sera beside him, he took her report smallest first. Attendance held. Demonstrations were running near their slates. One item.

”The Alchemists’ cold-fire,” Sera said. ”Two deep at the rope, and the back row is leaning on the front.”

Below, pale flame stood in a glass ring, and the crowd around it had the forward tilt of people who had paid nothing and meant to see everything.

”How many posts in the store?”

”Six.”

”Send four. Rope back three paces. Give them margin.” A first-year leaned over the cordon, thought better of it, and leaned back. ”Crowds, like creditors, keep better at a distance.”

Sera’s weight sat forward on her front foot. She wrote it down and went.

The day was under control. Elias did not say so aloud. Days that were told as much had a way of taking it as a challenge.

Turning toward a sound he could not place, Elias understood that it was the lack of one.

The noise at the foot of the stair had not stopped. It had lowered itself, the way a room does when someone enters who expects to be heard. Then the crowd drew back into two walls.

Earlier, Elias had watched a gap open around one man, curved and wary, made by people unsure how near was too near. This one was ruled straight.

A young man came up the stair without hurry. He carried himself like someone trained from childhood to be looked at and disciplined enough to take no visible pleasure in it: shoulders broad and squared, every step spent economically, the black coat cut close enough to show the training beneath it. His hair was a bright, unbothered gold. His eyes were gold as well, but tarnished, the color of a coin that had passed through a great many hands and been kept by the last.

Two attendants followed a pace behind, one in black-and-gold half-armor, one with a slate.

At the third step the light caught his collar. A crowned lion in gold thread. The description finished itself into a name.

’Lucien Lysandra.’

’Two attendants. A procession would have been an announcement. Two are only a rumor.’

Halfway up, a boy in Scholar grey bowed from the rail. The Crown Prince returned his name, and a remark that he had moved his table out of the wind, without slowing. The boy would talk about it until midterm.

At the head of the stair Lucien stopped at precisely the distance the moment called for. Elias inclined his head to the depth it required, which the charter did not specify and which he had therefore measured for himself.

”Your Highness.”

”President Selcourt.” The voice was soft, pitched a shade below the surrounding noise, so that anyone hoping to hear it had to want to. Those nearby wanted to. ”I came to see how the Council spends an afternoon. It seems to spend it well.”

”It’s early to say, Your Highness. Ask me at dusk.”

”Then I shall ask at dusk.” The smile was courteous and arrived exactly on time. Lucien glanced back at his attendants. ”Wait at the stair, please. I would like the president’s afternoon to myself for a little while.”

The retainer’s hand had settled near his belt. ”Your Highness, protocol—”

”Ten paces will serve it.”

The retainer looked as though the number cost him something, and paid it.

Walking the length of the terrace, they kept a pace that suited conversation. Ten paces back, the retainer measured his distance with the care of a man who had been given the number and not the reason.

Below, a Martial sash and a Magician’s collar stood with their heads over one sheet at the Scholars’ table, disagreeing with evident pleasure.

”Two Blocks that share a dining hall and hardly a sentence,” Lucien said. ”A society is the one room in the Academy where people are seated by what they want to do, and not by what they are. I have always thought it the best thing the Council does.”

”The Council only unlocks the door, Your Highness. It holds, so long as nobody carries a seat in with them.”

”Most seats can be left at the door.” Lucien considered the lawn. ”If someone asks kindly.”

A pair of Martial sashes came to attention at the rail. Lucien acknowledged them with a nod so slight it was mostly posture, and they went away looking taller.

”Has anything down there earned the Crown Prince’s interest?” Elias asked. He had picked the word for its second meaning. In his experience, interest granted once tended to compound. ”Or will Your Highness be signing a roll himself?”

”Surely you jest, President Selcourt.” One brow rose a degree, and no further. ”A prince at a recruitment table stops being a member and becomes an event. No. I came to watch what they choose when no one is assigning it to them. Assignment shows how the Academy is arranged. Choice shows how it will be arranged next year.”

Below, the Alchemists’ ring flared a shade brighter, and the crowd stepped back three paces without being asked. The posts had arrived. Elias allowed himself exactly one breath of satisfaction.

”A good many of them have chosen well today, Your Highness.”

”So I have observed.”

That was all. Elias had not accused him of anything, which was a fine distinction, and Lucien was standing on it in comfort.

He filed the answer the way he filed a receipt: every figure correct, and the total left off.

Reaching the far rail, Lucien stopped and let the grounds finish arranging themselves below.

”Alaric Vayne has asked me to attend the aerial society’s closing presentation,” he said, in the tone one uses to mention weather in another district. ”The fourth bell, on the launch platforms. I understand it concerns an expanded program, and something that wants a signature.”

The signature was Elias’s. A petition for expanded platform use had been sitting in his queue since Tuesday, and he had meant to walk the site before signing.

”Then it concerns the Council as well, Your Highness.”

”I thought it might.” Lucien did not turn from the lawn. ”You will want to see the platforms before you sign for them. And I would be glad of company on the stair. I am told it is steep.”

It was neither order nor request. It was an open door with a Crown Prince standing in it, and a president who declined to inspect a petition because a prince had also been invited was making a statement. Elias had made his for the day.

Platforms, in the Council’s sense, meant timber and rope. In Lucien’s sense they might mean something else, and Elias intended to learn which was on today’s agenda.

”The fourth bell,” he said. ”I’ll bring the petition.”

”Do.”

’He wants me there. Whether as a witness or an exhibit, he hasn’t said.’

Descending the outer stair toward the northern grounds, they walked through a crowd that parted for them and closed again behind, like a page turned and smoothed flat.

Lucien gave nobody his whole attention and nobody none of it. Elias began keeping count.

A Martial sash whose family held a border garrison received a nod and a name. A girl at the Herbalists’ table, who had offered no bow at all, was asked about the trellis she had built, and answered with pink ears. One of Elias’s own second-years, caught with a slate held like a shield, was asked whether the north lawn had ever found its lens.

”Found, Your Highness,” the boy managed. ”Twenty minutes late.”

”Then it has learned something.” Lucien walked on.

It had been the one item on Elias’s slate that had gone properly wrong all day. He set that down without comment. A dozen faces along the way had plainly expected a greeting, and Lucien spent a syllable on none of them. He spent attention the way Elias spent calendar slots: where it would purchase something.

”Alaric Vayne has kept clear of every table that offered a seat,” Elias said. ”It has been remarked on.”

”It has.” Lucien did not dispute the description. ”Independence is useful, when it produces clear decisions.”

It sounded like praise. Elias put it aside to examine later, the way one sets down a coin that rings slightly wrong.

The wind reached them before the platforms did, a long, steady push down the open ground that smelled of rope and cold stone.

The aerial society had claimed the highest terrace the Academy could spare. Timber launch platforms stepped up the slope, signal flags snapped on tall poles, and a course of hoops hung between posts like a lesson in humility. Members were clearing the central floor for the closing demonstration, dragging harness racks aside with the brisk contempt of people who had rehearsed. Applicants stood in loose knots along the perimeter, necks craned.

Two of the figures on the second platform Elias had last seen over twelve paces of flagstone. Reyne stood at a ward-post with her brass rod in hand. Brell stood beside her with a tether coil at his shoulder, hanging slack, for the moment. The compromise Elias had built for them that morning had evidently survived the day, and neither had committed to a table since. Each had honest business here: wards for the platforms, line for anything that flew. He still meant to give each a proper conversation before the term was out.

It was the ease that caught him.

An aide in the society’s sash met them at the foot of the stair and did not ask who they were, or which way. Reyne was in the middle of a sentence when Lucien came into view. ”—so the third stage sits above the line, and I will want the rope gone by—” She stopped, gave him the nod owed to an expected arrival, and finished the clause. No one introduced anyone. Brell answered her as though the last minute had never been interrupted.

It proved nothing. People with business on a platform stood on it. But a gathering that easy took either practice or notice, and Elias could not yet say which.

Descending the platform steps with the wind tugging at the sleeves, Alaric Vayne greeted Elias first, and correctly.

”President Selcourt. The Council does us honor. You have the petition?”

”I do.”

”Then this will be short.” Only then did Alaric turn. ”Your Highness.” The bow was exact: the depth owed to a Crown Prince, and not a hair beyond. ”The society is glad to receive a guest. It answers to its charter and to Academy regulation, so I will say plainly what a guest may expect. The order of presentation was filed with the Council on Tuesday. It will run as filed, for every guest alike.”

”That is as it should be,” Lucien said.

”Guests with an interest in the petition stand with the petitioners.” A gesture took in the forward edge of the top platform, where a row of marks had been chalked along the boards. ”Not with the officers. Your Highness will understand.”

”Entirely.”

There was no arch of the brow, no reminder of whose guest anyone was. Lucien inclined his head, crossed the boards, and stepped onto one of the marks near the middle of the row without glancing down to find it. Alaric did not explain the order of the afternoon to him, and he did not ask. The terms had evidently been sent ahead. A careful house would have sent them.

On the second platform, Reyne’s rod had gone still against the post, and Brell had lowered his coil to the boards. Both were watching with a stillness Elias would have called intent in anyone less composed. It was not every day a Crown Prince was seen being told where to stand. He would have watched, too.

Elias could read the shape of it. Every table on the field had offered House Vayne a seat, and Alaric had taken none, and here was the reason laid out in timber and chalk: a society that answered to its charter would not be seen answering to a prince. Alaric was holding the line, both kinds.

The chair at the rail was the Council’s. Alaric turned Elias toward it with a small gesture. ”The rail has the best view of the course, President.”

Elias took it. The view was indeed excellent.

Alaric nodded to an aide, and the signal flags went up to open the closing order.

Elias looked from the chair reserved for him to the chalk beneath Lucien’s boots.

Alaric had given the prince a place in the presentation, but not control of it.

For the first time since Lucien’s arrival, Elias thought he understood why he had been invited.
