Shattered Innocence: Transmigrated Into a Novel as an Extra

Chapter 1221: The Cost of Waiting

By the time the aerial society lowered its signal flags, the declaration had reached every quarter of the recruitment grounds.

It traveled ahead of the people who carried it. Students left the northern slope with some portion of the truth and reached the central tables with another: House Vayne had entered the Circuit, Alaric Vayne had pledged himself to the Crown Prince, three more houses had put their names beside Lucien’s. Each telling drew a cluster around it, and within minutes the event belonged as much to those who had missed it as to those who had watched.

Representatives who had ignored the aerial platforms all afternoon now climbed toward them, slowing only at the line forming around Alaric. One asked for the petition. Another wanted the limits of House Reyne’s support repeated before he committed a question to paper. A third sent his attendant away and stayed behind, though he had spent the morning telling anyone who listened that his house would take no position during the first term.

Lucien pursued none of them. He stood near the lower stair with Alaric and the houses that had declared, receiving whoever approached without gathering them into a circle. No banner marked the group as his. Vayne’s decision made the claim unnecessary, and the people arriving now supplied their own momentum.

Elias came down from the platform with Sera beside him.

Halfway to the ground he saw Lord Denovar talking with Brell. Elias had meant to invite Denovar to the Council office next week. The hour still sat blank on his schedule, waiting for a confirmation he had never sent. Now Denovar’s attendant held a copy of the Circuit terms while Brell tapped the amended command clause with one blunt finger.

At the foot of the stair a representative from House Marcen asked the society clerk whether outside instructors could join without contributing riders. The clerk sent him to Reyne, and Marcen went without a glance toward either royal table.

The declarations were finished. Their work was not.

”Three undeclared houses have asked for copies,” Sera said once they were clear of the crowd. ”Denovar makes four, if that conversation ends the way it looks.”

”Give them the filed copy. No annotations.”

”The clerk already has that instruction.”

Gregor caught them by the central dais just long enough to report over his shoulder on his way to count safety equipment: one burned sleeve, two missing route slates, a Cartographers’ marker found somewhere it had no business being, and six versions of the declaration he trusted none of and had repeated three. Sera sent him off before he could offer a fourth.

The grounds still looked like Clubs Day if one watched only the work. Applicants returned borrowed gear. Seniors counted names under banners already coming down. Near the Alchemists’ table, four students argued over how to carry the cold-fire ring without putting it out, each correcting the others while nobody touched the handles. The ordinary ending went on around an arrangement that had changed before most of the field understood it.

”Bring the contact records to the office,” Elias said. ”The ones we marked for follow-up.”

Sera studied him a moment, made a note, and did not ask what had changed. The answer was still moving through the field around them.

They passed under the western arch as the first banners came down.

The Student Council office had collected the remains of Clubs Day faster than its officers could sort them.

Route sheets covered one end of the long table under a stack of unopened notes. Recruitment registers lay in uneven piles, ordered by whichever society had remembered to return them. Someone had left three boundary markers by the door, still powdered with chalk. The aerial society’s petition waited alone under the green cord reserved for formal review.

Elias lit the lamp at his desk and pulled the four files he had kept on Vayne, Reyne, Brell and Edevane. Sera came in with the contact records braced against her hip, set them down, and took the chair opposite without being invited. At this hour ceremony only delayed whoever would have to clear the registers afterward.

The files were accurate, which was the trouble with them. Alaric had refused every factional table and kept the aerial society clear of both royal circles. Reyne had left two dinners hosted by Selienne’s allies without accepting a second invitation. Brell had spread his courtesies evenly enough that no one could claim preference. Edevane had told Elias to his face that her house was waiting for an offer worth answering. Each page recorded what a house had announced. None recorded who had been allowed to approach it, whose first proposal had survived long enough to earn revisions, or what had been settled before a second meeting.

Elias had watched the first stage and waited for the last. Lucien had worked in the interval.

He moved the four files into a separate stack. The stack did not trouble him. The gap it left in the rest did.

Sera read the nearest remaining names upside down. ”Are we inviting every house without a declared alignment?”

”No.”

”That would be the quick correction.”

”It would also announce that this afternoon frightened us.”

”It did.”

She said it without challenge, rubbing chalk from the side of her forefinger and leaving a pale streak on the cloth across her lap.

”Then we should learn from it before we advertise the injury.” Elias closed the last of the four. Invite everyone and half would come because refusing the Council looked discourteous, and the rest would arrive expecting an offer he had no reason to make. Contact without purpose spent attention, showed urgency, and left both sides in a conversation neither had wanted.

The correction had to be narrower. It began with the people whose value he had already recognized and had kept watching anyway, because another week had always seemed cheaper than approaching without perfect terms.

Three records down, he found Lucavion.

The file was thinner than the attention around its owner suggested. Rank, Block placement, diagnostic results, the public account of his exchange with the Crown Prince. One separate page held what the Council knew of Selienne’s approach, little of it direct. She had offered Lucavion patronage before enrollment. He had refused without bargaining and left her unable to say which part of the offer had failed.

On Clubs Day Elias had watched him read the society notices to the last line and decided to wait. A week, he had told himself, long enough to learn something that was not already in a file. Lucien had taken far longer, and the difference had just been read aloud to the whole field.

Sera followed his attention. ”He refused a princess.”

”She offered him a place under her name.”

”And you won’t?”

”No.”

Lucavion’s refusals made more sense once Elias stopped treating Selienne’s offer as the only model. The boy resisted absorption, which did not make every kind of cooperation useless to him. He had accepted a defined arrangement with Princess Priscilla, fought inside Academy rules when the purpose interested him, and answered practical pressure more readily than ceremony. A permanent superior would fail before the conversation began. A responsibility could be put down when the work ended.

The distinction gave Elias somewhere to start, and a shape began to form behind it. It had to do with the minutes between something going wrong at an Academy event and someone with authority arriving to say so, and with a first-year who, in his estimation, did not wait through minutes like that. The Council had never been short of signatures. He had only ever asked what a signature could record.

He stopped there. Terms would come from what Lucavion asked for, the way the afternoon had been built out of what Reyne and Brell could not do without, and a man who arrived carrying terms tended to defend them.

Sera studied his face. ”You have something.”

”A shape. Not terms.”

”What does the shape do?”

”It ends. That is most of what I know about it.”

She let that stand for a moment. ”Is this because of what happened today?”

Sera did not usually ask why, and Elias noted that she had.

He did not answer at once. Outside the office someone dragged a crate down the corridor, stopped near the stair, and began arguing in a low voice about which storeroom had issued it. The sound faded when a door opened.

”His value did not change this afternoon,” Elias said.

”Your willingness to speak to him did.”

He could have explained the difference between preparation and delay, or pointed out that approaching Lucavion during Clubs Day would have turned the Council’s interest into a spectacle. Both were true. Neither changed the blank hour on his schedule, or the week he had been prepared to spend.

”Yes.”

Sera picked up her slate.

He closed the other records and left Lucavion’s on the desk. This was contact with a purpose. He simply was not spending it yet.

”Find him and call him here.”
