Shattered Innocence: Transmigrated Into a Novel as an Extra

Chapter 1209: Selenne’s First Lecture (3)

He repeated the release a dozen times before the room around him started sounding different. Traces that had gone up clean an hour ago were coming apart now — not from carelessness, but from students no longer smoothing them on the way to the plate. The polish was leaving the room on purpose. Two stations over, the girl who had traced a route narrowing near her elbow let three rough attempts through in a row and did not apologize for any of them.

His own control still moved before he asked it to. He could feel the pressure gather now, a fraction of a second he hadn’t been able to isolate that morning — but locating where noticing ended and obeying began remained like trying to mark the exact point a struck bell stopped ringing.

He tried again, deliberately.

The pressure built at the same narrow point. He followed it the way Selenne had asked — not stopping it, not redirecting it, just watching the instant his hand decided to answer. It happened. He let it finish, the correction moving as fast and clean as it always did, and only afterward, breathing out, did he manage to fix a mark on where it had started. Not the beginning. Somewhere close to the beginning. Closer than he’d managed before.

He looked at the new trace, steadier than it should have been given how much of it he’d allowed to run, and decided that counted as progress even if it hadn’t felt like one.

”You’re getting worse,” Elara said, glancing at his plate without slowing her own hands. ”I mean that as a compliment, which should concern you.”

”You say the nicest things.”

”I’ve been told I have a gift.”

”For cruelty, specifically.”

”For observation,” she said, and there was something almost satisfied in it, watching him irritable and present instead of quiet and elsewhere. She didn’t say what she meant by that, and he didn’t ask her to.

Up front, Selenne let the room work another minute before raising her voice enough to carry over it.

”You are beginning to notice three things happening where you once noticed one,” she said. ”Name them properly, and the distinction stops living only in your hands. The first is the movement itself — mana doing what your body’s habits already permit, before any decision touches it. The second is the trained response, the correction so practiced it no longer announces itself as a choice. The third, when it exists at all, is the decision you make on top of both — to let the response through, to alter it, or to stop it entirely.”

She gestured toward a station two rows over without naming the student.

”That trace narrowed near the elbow — movement. It corrected within the same breath — response. Nothing after that was decision, because nothing was left to decide.” Her gaze crossed the room once. ”Most of you are still working with two of the three. That is not a failure. It is where the exercise begins.”

The novel had treated Selenne’s competence as something already established. People sought her judgment, followed her instructions and improved beneath them. It had spent considerably less time on how she accomplished any of that.

Sitting here supplied the missing labor. She had spent the morning making sixteen students produce worse results, remembered the reason behind each deterioration and then given the room language precise enough to examine it.

’So this is how she earned it.’

Lucavion turned back toward her before Elara had to say his name again.

He wanted to hear the rest of it.

Selenne let the room settle before giving them their next task. ”Choose one trace you’ve already produced. Mark where the original movement occurred, where the trained response began, and whether any deliberate decision followed it. If you cannot find one boundary honestly, leave it unmarked. An honest gap is more useful to me than an invented one.”

A boy near the front marked his correction as the original movement itself, certain of it because the same adjustment had appeared in every attempt he’d made all morning. ”Familiar,” Selenne told him, ”is not the same as first. Ask what your hand would have done the one time it wasn’t corrected.” He had no answer, which she seemed to consider a more honest result than a wrong one.

Two rows over, a girl described an automatic hesitation as a choice she’d made mid-cast. Selenne asked her to recall the half-second before deciding, whether there had been anything to decide, or only a stop that had already happened by the time she noticed it. The girl’s confidence thinned considerably before she revised the mark.

Isolde had been assembling her answer from everyone else’s corrections all morning, and it showed in how quickly she produced one now — accurate, tidy, built from other people’s mistakes rather than her own sensation. Selenne studied it a moment longer than the others.

”Do it again. Without watching the plate.”

Isolde’s composure didn’t slip, but something behind it recalculated. She had learned to read the room faster than anyone Lucavion had watched all morning; asked to work without the room to read, she would have to locate the sensation herself for the first time.

Selenne moved on without further comment. ’Thorough,’ Lucavion thought, watching her go. ’Uncomfortably so.’

He turned back to his own plate and made himself as honest as he’d asked the others to be. The pressure at his wrist he could mark with confidence; that boundary hadn’t moved all morning. The trained response’s beginning he could place now within a breath of its actual start. The third boundary defeated him. He’d been watching for the moment a decision entered the sequence, and the watching itself might have manufactured one that wouldn’t otherwise have existed. He left that mark where it was. Absent.

When Selenne reached him, she read the gap without asking him to explain it.

”You’ve placed the first two well.”

”The third isn’t there. Or I put it there by looking for it.”

”Likely both are true at once, for you specifically.” She nodded toward the unmarked space. ”Your mana obeys quickly enough that recognizing it and commanding it happen close to the same instant. That isn’t a flaw you’re required to correct today. It only means the beginning of the sequence will always be harder for you to examine than for someone whose hand waits a moment longer before answering.”

She left before he could decide whether that qualified as reassurance.

He sat with it anyway. He had always measured his own control partly by the shortness of that distance — intention to response, with as little as possible living between them. In a fight, that gap had kept him alive more times than he’d bothered counting. Here, it was simply the reason the beginning kept slipping past him before he could look at it directly.

He moved his second mark back a fraction and let the space stay empty where it needed to.

Selenne closed the exercise by setting the next one loose on the rest of the week. Before the following lesson, each student was to choose one ordinary use of mana, outside the classroom, and record whatever correction recurred in it, what seemed to trigger the correction, and whether any real decision ever entered the sequence at all.

Chairs scraped back. Elara fell into step beside him as the class began clearing its stations.

”You’ve found the one subject where being wrong is apparently the correct answer,” she said. ”I’d call it a talent, if I thought you’d earned it on purpose.”

”I have hidden depths, apparently.”

”You have gaps you can’t locate. It isn’t the same thing, though I understand the confusion.”

He let that one land without a rebuttal, which seemed to satisfy her more than an argument would have. She didn’t ask what had put him somewhere else earlier that morning, and didn’t need to; whatever she’d noticed in him then, she seemed content to note that it had gone, and leave the rest alone.

Walking out, Lucavion let himself consider, briefly, how much of the morning he’d nearly spent somewhere else entirely. Jesse hadn’t been wrong about any of it, and nothing that had happened in this classroom changed a word of what she’d said. But an empty morning wouldn’t have improved on her assessment either. Whatever needed repairing there would still be waiting for him after this lesson, exactly as unrepaired as before.

’Later,’ he decided, without much conviction that later would be any easier than now.

For the moment, there was an assignment to keep, a habitual correction to locate somewhere in the next several days, and, underneath all of it, something that had been missing since he’d walked in that morning and only now, packing his things beside people who annoyed him in ways he’d chosen to find funny, made itself known again: he wanted to see what Selenne would teach them next.
