Shattered Innocence: Transmigrated Into a Novel as an Extra

Chapter 1212: The Opponent Who Accepted

“If that were true, I would have refused the offer.”

The classroom turned, and Elara found she could not fault the timing.

Thalor Draycott did not enter so much as consent to be in the doorway, one shoulder against the frame, blue hair falling in an immaculate line beside a face arranged around mild amusement. His eyes were a silver-gray that moved over the tiers without haste, taking inventory. The tailoring was high noble and quiet about it: dark blue silk cut so that nothing required attention and everything invited it. Students on the near benches had shifted to clear the aisle before he had decided to use it. Whether he noticed, she could not tell. She suspected he had stopped noticing years ago, the way one stops noticing a floor.

He walked in at the pace of someone with all the time in the world and nothing better to spend it on. “Do go on,” he said. His voice was deep and smooth and leisurely. “It is not often one hears oneself discussed as a foregone conclusion. I would like to see how the argument ends.”

Nobody went on.

“Lucavion lacks a formal foundation,” Thalor said, when it became clear no one would. “That is true, and I will not pretend otherwise. His written marks say so plainly. But anyone who takes it for the whole of him has not read the rest of his record. A perfect practical result. A man who rebuilt his approach mid-examination when the conditions shifted under him. A ceremonial flame that declined to behave like one.” He let a beat pass. “Whenever a contest stops following its expected structure, he becomes more dangerous, not less.”

“Then you agree with us, my lord.” The boy from the windows had found his voice, and the smile that went with it. “A swordsman with only improvisation has nothing to fall back on. It must be a comfort, Lord Thalor, to face someone so plainly beneath the Tower’s training.”

Thalor looked at him, pleasantly, for a moment.

“I agree with nothing of the kind.” No edge came into it, which made it worse. “If he were what you describe, accepting would cost me an afternoon and earn me nothing. I do not care to be congratulated for defeating someone you have already decided is unworthy.”

The boy’s smile stayed where it was and stopped being useful.

‘He wants a problem, not a ranking.’ The boy had wanted a hierarchy confirmed and had been handed a man who would not be flattered by one. Elara had expected the Draycott heir to be his name and little else. Inherited arrogance did not study the record of the person it meant to fight. Thalor had read Lucavion the way he might read an unfamiliar structure, and his confidence sat on the reading, not merely on the house behind him.

“And Her Highness,” Thalor added, as though remembering a courtesy, “was broadly accurate about how I prepare. I would not have put it so well myself.”

He turned toward the third tier.

“Priscilla.” He said it the way one sets down something familiar, with no title and no hurry, and a ripple ran through the tiers at the omission. “You always did see how I work more clearly than anyone in this room. I had forgotten how uncomfortable that can be.”

It was said warmly, and it was not an insult. That was what made the room hold still.

“We should discuss it properly, and not in front of an audience. This evening, perhaps. You will want to see what Magister Marisse does to my preparation, and you are in a position to tell me a good deal about Lucavion.” He smiled as though the arrangement were already written down. “I will have someone arrange the hour.”

No one on the tiers pretended not to listen. The girl from the windows had leaned forward, patient, waiting for a flush or a flinch.

Priscilla gave her neither. “I described your method because I was asked in this room,” she said. “I understand it, and I will not pretend I do not. That is all it is.” Her voice did not rise. “Understanding a thing is not the same as being available for it, Thalor. You may arrange your own evening.”

His mouth curved, more in patience than offense. “Sharper than necessary,” he said mildly. “But I will allow it. We can find another hour.”

He had not heard the refusal. Elara saw it plainly: he had received it as the opening move of a negotiation.

‘Two kinds of hostility.’ Lucien’s people wanted Priscilla diminished until the room forgot to look at her. Thalor looked at her more clearly than anyone here, valued what he saw, and had never once considered that what he valued might not remain his to arrange. It was gentler than the windows, and harder to answer.

Elara did not repeat Priscilla’s answer, and she would not stand in front of it. Priscilla had said what she meant. What remained was to take away the thing he might build on it.

“Lord Thalor.” She waited until he turned. “You said his record has to be read in full. Read in full, it still does not say why the First Seat would accept a match with a Martial student at all. What does?”

The amusement stayed on his face, though it changed its purpose. “My own arrangements I will keep to myself,” he said. “What I can tell you is what anyone can read. He keeps producing results that his education and his classification cannot account for. When the explanation and the evidence disagree, one of them is wrong, and I would like to know which.”

He looked at her then, properly, as he had looked at no one else since he entered. He knew her, of course, by rank and by reputation: eighth in the Block, frost, and something silver the Crystal Hall could not name. He had plainly filed her under those headings. For the first time, it was her manner that had come loose from the file.

Elara held his gaze exactly as long as courtesy required, and not a breath longer.

He was clever. She would give him that without reservation. He had seen the weakness in the room’s assumptions before anyone had finished stating them, and he had refused praise built on a poor understanding of the man he meant to fight. Most students of his rank would have taken the flattery and the victory together.

In the same breath, he had taken Priscilla’s intelligence and turned it into a claim on her evening. ‘He respects what she knows. He has never asked whether she is willing to give it.’

The name did something else. Draycott was Eveline’s name, and Elara knew what that house had put into her master: an education few in the Empire could match. She also knew enough of Eveline’s history to understand that the name carried pain there, and that not all of it had been explained to her. She did not know what Thalor was to Eveline, and she could not hold him accountable for events no one had told her in full. Caution came anyway, before argument.

Her judgment stayed provisional. Thalor deserved his reputation. His interest in Lucavion was real. His treatment of Priscilla showed a flaw his intelligence had not corrected. She wanted to know what kind of Draycott he was before she allowed him anything like familiarity.

The door opened at the front before she could carry the thought further.

“Hello there.” The voice reached the tiers before its owner had cleared the doorway, mild and faintly dry. “It seemed quite a discussion was happening. I hope it ended in a decisive result. I would hate to have interrupted a draw.”

The instructor came in without looking at anyone, and the noise thinned to nothing in the time it took to reach the desk.

Thalor took a seat near the front with no more ceremony than he had made standing. Behind the windows, the girl’s smile had nowhere left to go. A question put to a princess could not be pressed in front of a lecturer without becoming a scene, and none of them wanted that kind of notice.

The rest of the hour was ordinary in the way the Academy’s hours generally were. Elara took notes, answered one small question about the second problem, and found she had underlined the same line twice without reading it. The boy behind her folded his page smaller and smaller. On the third tier, Priscilla’s pen did not stop once.

When the class was dismissed, Priscilla waited at the end of Elara’s bench for the aisle to clear.

“Lady Caerlin.” She did not say thank you, and Elara was grateful for it. “You did not need to ask what you asked.”

“I wanted the answer.”

“So I assumed. It is the only reason it worked.” Priscilla’s gaze rested on her a moment. “He spoke more plainly to you than he meant to. Do you truly expect Lucavion to win?”

Elara weighed the honest form of it. “I have watched him under pressure. I would not wager against him. Nor would I wager for Thalor. I have seen too little of him.”

“That is more than most of this room can say. Most of them have decided.” Priscilla inclined her head, a degree less formal than before. “I would like to hear the rest of your reasoning some day, if you are willing.”

“I am.”

Priscilla nodded once and went out, unhurried, and no one on the tiers found anything to say to her back.

“You have made an interesting morning of it,” Aurelian said, sliding his materials into his bag. “I thought you were only going to be late.”

“I would say interesting is generous,” Selphine said, and then, because she was Selphine, went straight to the practical thing. She unfolded a notice she had been carrying since the corridor. “Clubs Day is being posted on every board. Societies recruit, and seniors run the tables. First-years are encouraged to attend.”

“Is that a warning or a recommendation?”

“It is a schedule.” Selphine smoothed the fold. “I would like to see which societies senior students actually bother to attend, and which of them have facilities worth the trouble.”

“I would like to see the Cartographers,” Aurelian said. “In two weeks I have not found one classroom on the first try. If anyone in this Academy has a map that is correct, I want to shake their hand.” He looked at Elara. “We are going together, obviously.”

Elara thought it through, briefly, the way she thought most things through. Seniors she could learn from. Facilities she did not yet have access to. Relationships that would not come to her through her current classes. And a reason, of a kind she had not needed a fortnight ago, to be somewhere on purpose.

“Together,” she said. She had chosen no society yet, and did not pretend otherwise.

They left in a loose line, the Magicians’ Block emptying around them into the corridor. Along the walls, the first banners were already going up on the boards, bright against the stone. Elara carried three things out with her: a conversation with Priscilla that had begun on Priscilla’s terms, a judgment of Thalor she meant to keep open, and a day on the calendar that had not been there that morning.
