Shattered Innocence: Transmigrated Into a Novel as an Extra

Chapter 1208: Selenne’s First Lecture (2)

The plate stayed blank beneath his palm. Beside him, Selenne had already stopped at Elara’s station, her attention no longer on his.

He could have reproduced the first trace without difficulty, proof only that he could repeat a mistake. Selenne had told him what he’d done, not how to stop doing it. ’Diagnose the disease, withhold the cure.’ He found he didn’t mind the problem having teeth.

Elara sat with her spine set at a precise, unhurried angle, breathing slowed into something deliberate enough to count. Selenne studied her trace a moment before speaking.

”You’ve built a very calm room to observe an ordinary reaction in,” she said. ”The reaction doesn’t live there anymore. Sit as you would if I weren’t watching. Stop counting the breath.”

Elara’s mouth flattened a fraction — the closest she allowed herself to visible irritation — before her shoulders dropped from their careful line.

Lucavion watched the shift: not collapse, just release, her spine finding an angle she hadn’t chosen for anyone’s benefit. His trace had gone wrong because his hands did what they always did before he’d finished noticing; hers had gone wrong because she’d decided, carefully, what they should do instead. Two mistakes wearing the same correction.

Selenne wasn’t asking either of them to empty out years of training. She was asking what happened after — the extra hand that reached in and tidied the result.

Two stations down, the boy whose trace kept vanishing had stopped flinching. Selenne paused there only briefly. ”Whatever taught you to swallow a pulse before it reaches your hand was doing its job when it taught you that. It isn’t doing its job here.” The line held a moment longer before collapsing anyway — progress, spent immediately.

Across the aisle, Isolde adjusted her grip on the plate’s edge before Selenne reached her station — a correction absorbed from watching two others fail, taken without looking up, as if the lesson had simply arrived and been filed. Lucavion noted it the way he noted anything useful: she collected instruction not addressed to her.

He reset the plate. Not empty — he made no attempt to manufacture some scoured, neutral version of himself. He let mana move down the route his body already called ordinary and waited to see what came next.

Pressure gathered beneath his wrist at the same narrow point as before. His control moved to answer it — thinning the current on one side, turning the excess toward the cleaner line — and he caught it a half-step into happening instead of a half-step after.

That alone felt like something.

He knew exactly how to finish the correction. Leaving it half-done sat wrong, unrelated to mana — the same wrongness as a blade left a few degrees out of true in his grip. He let it sit anyway.

The current reached his palm uneven. The plate recorded a line that bent where it should have run straight, its rhythm stumbling once before catching itself again.

His fingers had already begun moving to smooth it before he stopped them.

Selenne passed close enough to see it without stopping.

”Leave it there,” she said, and moved on before he could decide whether that counted as approval.

Elara’s gaze flicked to his plate on her way past — something in her expression recognized it for what it was rather than what it looked like. She said nothing. Isolde’s attention caught on it too, brief and unreadable, before returning to her own station.

Lucavion studied the crooked line a while longer. By every usual measure, it was worse than the first — uneven, interrupted, a record of failure rather than skill.

It was also the first thing on that plate he hadn’t decided the shape of before it arrived.

He didn’t call it understanding. He’d allowed one movement to reach the plate before deciding what to do with it — the whole of what he’d earned this morning. Not a grasp of his own innate flow. Just the first mark Selenne could actually use.

Selenne returned to the front once every plate in the room held at least one trace worth keeping. She didn’t ask them to fix anything yet.

”Before you correct what you did,” she said, ”tell me what you felt immediately before it happened. Not after. Before.”

A pale-haired boy near the front offered ”resistance.” She asked where. He hesitated, then said his wrist. She asked what kind — heat, weight, drag — and he settled, after a moment, on drag, like pulling something through water thicker than it should have been. She moved on without comment, which seemed to satisfy him more than praise would have.

Another student called it ”instability.” Selenne asked him to describe the instability without the word. He tried twice before landing on a pulse that shortened whenever he inhaled.

A third offered ”affinity,” which earned the mildest correction of the morning — affinity explained why a route existed, not what happened inside it. Pressed further, the girl admitted the route had narrowed, briefly, near her elbow.

She never supplied the answer herself. She only asked the next question until the vague word became a specific place.

Lucavion listened with an attention that had nothing performative in it. He had felt every one of those things — drag, a shortening pulse, a narrowing route — more times than he could count, usually while something was trying to kill him. Likely, if not for his background on Earth, those words would not return with the clarity that they were at the moment.

Nevertheless, he had simply never needed a name for any of it before. The body did not wait for vocabulary. It only occurred to him now, watching Selenne draw the words out of people less familiar with their own reflexes, that a thing could happen as one motion and still be, spoken aloud, three.

It was not a revelation in any aspect. It was merely an observation with a use attached to it.

Two stations over, Elara’s mouth had settled into something that wasn’t quite a frown, watching her own earlier correction repeated, more gently, on someone else. She had spent considerable effort building the wrong kind of stillness. Being right about the theory and wrong about the execution seemed to sit worse with her than either mistake alone would have.

Isolde had absorbed enough from the stations around her to produce something serviceable, until Selenne reached her and asked a question that owed nothing to what anyone else had been told. Isolde answered it carefully, without the small advantage she’d been collecting all morning.

Then Selenne stood at Lucavion’s station.

”Walk me through it. The trace.”

”Pressure built at my wrist. I redirected it.” He said it as one thing, because it had happened as one thing.

”Built, and then you redirected it. Or built, and the redirection arrived somewhere inside that.”

He considered the difference before answering. ”Inside it. There wasn’t space between them.”

”There was. You’ve simply never had to look for it.” She nodded once, toward the plate rather than at him. ”Find it next time.”

She moved to the next station without lingering, the same economy she’d shown at every other stop that morning — no mention of what made his trace different from the others, no question about how quickly it had steadied, nothing beyond the plate in front of him.

”For the remainder of this exercise,” she said, once she’d reached the front again, ”repeat the release. This time, identify the moment your trained response begins. You are not required to stop it. Only to know when it starts.”

Lucavion looked at the crooked line still resting on his plate before he cleared it.

He was no longer waiting for the exercise to become difficult. He was wondering, with a specificity he hadn’t allowed himself before, how much of what he called instinct had simply been trained long enough to stop announcing itself as training.
