Harry Potter: Most Annoying System Ever

The air at the entrance plaza of Chessington World of Adventures was thick with the scent of fried sugar, roasted nuts, and damp winter pines.

Draco stood frozen on the pavement, his head craned so far back it looked in danger of snapping off entirely. His silver-grey eyes were wide, taking in the towering, brightly painted wooden facades, the vibrant neon signage, and, most terrifyingly, the colossal web of steel tracks arching high above the treeline in the distance. Every few seconds, the faint, ecstatic screams of riders echoed on the cold wind, accompanied by the low, mechanical rumble of coasters flying over rails.

”Orion,” Draco whispered, clutching his brother’s sleeve with a trembling, leather-gloved hand. ”You... you were not joking. This is... it’s a city of slides.”

”Infinitely larger than the little plastic ramp at the Manor,” Orion agreed smoothly, stepping up beside him. He gently pried Draco’s fingers off his coat and turned to face him, adopting a posture of absolute authority.

”Now, before we cross that archway, Draco, we are establishing three non-negotiable ground rules. You will follow them to the letter, or I will call Dobby and have you Apparated straight back to Father’s study before you can take another breath.”

Draco swallowed hard, nodding rapidly. ”What rules?”

”Rule number one,” Orion said, holding up a finger. ”You are here to enjoy yourself. Therefore, you will not push past people, you will not sneer at the crowds, and you will not trouble or insult anyone. There will be no ’My father will hear about this’, and there will certainly be no slurs. If someone bumps into you, you say ’excuse me’ and move on.”

Draco frowned, his pureblood conditioning bristling slightly, but a distant roar of a coaster car climbing a lift-hill instantly obliterated his protest. ”Fine. No pushing.”

”Rule number two,” Orion continued. ”Many of these attractions are engineered to push the absolute physical limits of human acceleration without magic. They are dangerous if disrespected. Whatever safety instructions are posted per ride—pulling down the harnesses, keeping your limbs inside the carts, listening to the attendants—you will follow them without hesitation. You do not argue with physics.”

”And rule three?” Draco asked, practically bouncing on his heels.

Orion smirked. ”Have fun.”

Orion led the way to the guest services booth, completely bypassing the long queues of shivering families. Utilizing a thick stack of the crisp Muggle banknotes Dobby had secured from Gringotts, Orion purchased two all-inclusive VIP Fast-Track passes, complete with lanyard badges that granted priority boarding on every attraction in the park.

Before they entered the main gates, however, Orion glanced critically at Draco’s attire.

”First detour,” Orion decided, pointing toward a large apparel boutique near the turnstiles. ”Your clothes scream ’Victorian vampire’.”

Inside the shop, Orion used more of the paper currency to completely overhaul their wardrobes to match the atmosphere.

They shed their heavy, aristocratic wool coats and dragon-hide cloaks. Orion selected a sleek, oversized black bomber jacket over a charcoal turtleneck, paired with dark denim jeans and sturdy black boots.

For Draco, Orion deliberately picked out a bright, emerald-green windbreaker jacket over a thick grey hoodie, relaxed-fit denim trousers, and a pair of pristine white trainers.

Draco stood before the full-length mirror in the changing area, staring at his reflection in utter bewilderment. He patted the synthetic, waterproof fabric of his jacket, listening to the crinkling sound it made.

”It’s... loud,” Draco muttered, inspecting his trainers. ”And the material feels completely synthetic. Is there no silk in this entire shop?”

”It is designed to keep you warm and dry when you are flying through the air at sixty miles an hour, Draco,” Orion replied dryly, checking his own reflection. ”You look like a normal, incredibly wealthy Muggle teenager. Stop fussing and let’s go.”

The year was 1993, and Chessington was in its golden era of themed engineering.

Orion unfolded the park map, systematically charting a course through the distinct zones, moving from the eastern perimeter inward.

Their first stop was the crown jewel of the park: The Vampire.

Opened only three years prior, it was one of the premier suspended swinging rollercoasters in Europe. The queue wound through an elaborately themed, gothic crypt complete with atmospheric organ music, dim red lanterns, and skeletal gargoyles.

Draco’s arrogance returned slightly as they walked through the crypt. ”Ha! A crypt? They think this is scary? I’ve seen the family mausoleum at the Manor, Orion! This is nothing!”

Ten minutes later, thanks to their VIP passes, they were strapped into the front row of the train.

The ride was a suspended coaster; there was no floor beneath their feet. Their legs dangled freely over the track as the heavy steel lap bars locked into place with a series of loud, mechanical CLACKS.

Draco’s bravado evaporated instantly. His hands clamped onto the foam-padded handles with a grip so ferocious his knuckles turned white.

”Orion,” Draco squeaked, his voice pitching up an entire octave as the floor beneath them mechanically dropped away. ”Where is the floor?! Why are my feet hanging?!”

”To simulate flight, brother,” Orion replied casually, resting his arms comfortably on the restraints. ”Besides, why are you so worried? You have flown higher than this, during your Quidditch match.”

The train engaged the lift-hill with a rhythmic, deafening CLINK-CLINK-CLINK, slowly dragging them up toward the grey sky, climbing higher and higher above the treetops.

”We’re too high,” Draco whispered, staring down at the miniature trees below. ”We are entirely too high without a broom!”

The train crested the apex.

For a single, breathless second, the entire park stretched out before them in a dizzying panorama.

And then, gravity claimed them.

The train plunged straight down into a dark tunnel, banking violently at fifty miles an hour. The suspended carriages swung outward at a terrifying, forty-five-degree angle, swooping through the tree canopy, skimming the frost-covered grass, and spiraling through tight corkscrews.

Draco did not just scream; he shrieked with a visceral, lung-emptying terror that drowned out the soundtrack of the ride.

Orion threw his head back and laughed, the sheer, kinetic rush of Muggle mechanical engineering flooding his veins. There was no magic here—no levitation charms, no feather-light enchantments—just raw, calculated physics, centripetal force, and structural steel designed to push adrenaline to the absolute brink.

By the time the train slammed into the final magnetic brake run, Draco’s hair was standing on end, completely ruined by the wind.

He sat frozen in the seat, panting heavily, his eyes the size of saucers.

”Well?” Orion asked, stepping out onto the exit platform as the restraints released. ”Do you want to go home?”

Draco slowly pushed himself out of the car. His legs wobbled violently for three steps before he caught his balance.

A massive, manic, utterly unhinged grin broke across his pale face.

”AGAIN!” Draco yelled, grabbing Orion’s bomber jacket. ”WE HAVE TO DO THAT AGAIN! IT SWINGS! THE CAR ACTUALLY SWINGS!”

They didn’t do it again immediately; Orion’s schedule was far too rigorous for repeats.

Instead, they conquered the park.

They rode The Runaway Train, an aggressive, high-speed mine coaster that had Draco howling with laughter as it whipped through tight, wooden tunnels.

They boarded Professor Burp’s Bubbleworks, an eccentric, vibrant dark water ride filled with animated machinery, fountains of scented bubbles, and absurd music. Draco spent the entire transit trying to pop the floating foam with his hands, entirely mesmerized by the mechanized whimsical engineering that operated without a single drop of magical core energy.

By one o’clock, their stomachs were roaring louder than the coasters.

Orion navigated them to a classic, American-style burger diner near the central plaza.

Using his Muggle currency, Orion ordered an absurd mountain of food: double-patty cheeseburgers wrapped in foil, giant cartons of steaming, salted french fries, deep-fried onion rings, and massive chocolate milkshakes topped with whipped cream and maraschino cherries.

They claimed a red vinyl booth near the large glass windows.

Draco stared suspiciously at the foil-wrapped burger in his hands. ”What is it?”

”A cheeseburger, Draco,” Orion said, taking a massive, deeply satisfying bite of his own. ”Try it before you critique it.”

Draco took a small, tentative nibble.

His eyes went wide. The combination of seasoned beef, melted cheddar, and toasted bread hit his pampered, pureblood palate like a bomb.

Within four minutes, the heir to the House of Malfoy was aggressively devouring the burger, grease shining on his chin, dipping fries into ketchup with wild abandon.

”This is incredible,” Draco mumbled around a mouthful of fries, slurping loudly on his chocolate shake. ”Why don’t the house-elves make this?! Why are we eating roast pheasant and boiled potatoes every night when this exists?!”

He began recounting the near-death experience on the Vampire coaster, his boisterous, unfiltered laughter echoing loudly across the diner.

His energetic, highly theatrical storytelling drew several amused looks from neighboring tables. A middle-aged Muggle couple seated nearby smiled warmly at the two brothers, the woman nudging her husband and murmuring about how lovely it was to see teenagers having such genuine, wholesome fun together.

Draco didn’t even notice the glances. For the first time in his thirteen years of existence, he was sitting in a room entirely surrounded by Muggles, completely oblivious to their blood status, simply existing as a happy child in a crowded restaurant.

The afternoon was a blur of velocity and cold air.

They conquered the pirate ship The Black Buccaneer, Draco shrieking as the massive vessel swung into near-vertical weightlessness. They wandered through the small zoo section, where Draco spent ten minutes passionately arguing with a rather unimpressed sea lion, convinced it was trying to communicate with him.

By five in the evening, the winter twilight had fully descended over Surrey.

The park was illuminated by thousands of twinkling, multi-colored holiday fairy lights, reflecting off the dusting of snow on the rooftops. The crowd was steadily thinning, families herding exhausted, laughing toddlers toward the exit gates.

Orion and Draco sat on a dark green wooden bench near the central lagoon, clutching large, steaming paper cups of rich hot chocolate topped with miniature marshmallows.

Draco leaned back against the slats, utterly exhausted, his cheeks rosy from the freezing wind, nursing his warm drink.

”Orion,” Draco said softly, his voice quiet, devoid of all his usual posturing and arrogance. ”Today was... it was awesome. Seriously. It was the best day of the whole year.”

Orion took a slow sip of his cocoa, letting the warmth settle into his chest. He looked out over the dark water of the lagoon, watching the reflection of the fairy lights ripple in the wind.

”I am glad you enjoyed it, Draco,” Orion replied gently.

He paused, letting the silence stretch between them for a long moment before speaking again.

”You know,” Orion began, his voice dropping into a calm, conversational, yet deeply philosophical register. ”This is precisely why I hold such a profound disdain for Dark Lords.”

Draco blinked, turning his head in surprise. ”What?”

Orion gestured with his paper cup toward the sprawling, illuminated skyline of the theme park—the coaster tracks looping into the night, the music playing softly from the speakers, the warmth of the concessions.

”Look at this place, Draco,” Orion said, his tone carrying the weight of absolute truth. ”Every single piece of steel. Every bolt. Every lightbulb. Every hydraulic brake, every coaster cart, and every recipe for the food we ate today... was designed, engineered, constructed, and operated entirely by Muggles.”

Draco sat silently, listening intently.

”They possess not a single drop of magic in their blood,” Orion continued smoothly. ”They cannot wave a stick to lift a beam. They cannot whisper an incantation to mend a rail. Yet, through sheer intellect, scientific iteration, and an unyielding desire to create joy... they built this.”

Orion turned to look directly into his brother’s grey eyes.

”And this is merely one park, Draco. There are dozens of them across this island. Hundreds across the continent. Thousands across the globe. Some with coasters that make The Vampire look like a child’s toy. They build machines that travel beneath the ocean, and vessels that fly beyond the clouds to touch the moon.”

He took a slow sip of his drink, his expression turning cold and serious.

”Now imagine a world where a Dark Lord succeeds. A world where Voldemort, or Grindelwald, or our father’s pureblood circle actually achieves their grand, delusional vision of conquering and subjugating the non-magical populace.”

Orion sneered slightly, gesturing into the empty dark.

”Do you honestly believe a place like this would exist under a regime of pureblood supremacy, Draco?”

Draco’s breath caught in his throat. He looked at the glowing lights, then back at Orion, his brow furrowing as his young mind wrestled with the reality.

”No,” Orion answered for him, his voice firm and unyielding. ”It wouldn’t. If the purebloods ruled, innovation would die. Creativity would be snuffed out under the boot of arrogance. Muggles would not be permitted to build marvels of engineering for their children to laugh in.”

Orion looked toward the distant horizon.

”Instead, all we would get... all a Dark Lord would ever demand... is a massive, hideous, gaudy stone statue of himself, forcefully carved by enslaved laborers in the center of an empty square. A monument to ego, surrounded by misery.”

Orion set his empty cup down on the bench.

”We don’t want that, Draco,” Orion concluded softly, the lesson delivered with surgical, devastating precision. ”A world of forced statues and grey ash is miserable. This... this vibrancy, this engineering, this sheer, unadulterated fun... is infinitely better.”

Draco did not speak.

He stared down into his steaming cup of hot chocolate, watching the miniature marshmallows melt into the dark liquid. The silence stretched between them for a full minute, the heavy, ingrained rhetoric of Lucius Malfoy crumbling silently beneath the weight of an undeniable, joyous afternoon.

Orion did not press for a confession. He knew the seed had been planted deep.

After some time of simple peace, he stood up, zipping his bomber jacket against the rising night chill, and stretched his arms.

”Come on, Draco,” Orion said with a faint, encouraging smile, clapping his brother on the shoulder. ”It’s time to leave. We still have some distance to drive back to London before Dobby has to Apparate us home for dinner.”

Draco slowly stood up, tossing his empty cup into a nearby bin. He looked back at the glowing coaster tracks one last time, a thoughtful, entirely changed expression lingering in his eyes.

”Yeah,” Draco murmured softly, stepping up beside his brother. ”Let’s go.”
