Harry Potter: Most Annoying System Ever

Remus Lupin stood in the snowy alleyway, the cold wind whipping his shabby robes around his legs. He didn’t immediately answer. He considered the boy standing before him—a thirteen-year-old who possessed the magical density of an adult, the tactical mind of a general, and the emotional walls of a fortress.

”The Patronus Charm,” Lupin began thoughtfully, pacing a slow, small circle in the snow, ”is a piece of magic that is based entirely on raw emotion, significantly more so than simple academic knowledge or magical power.”

He stopped, turning his amber eyes back to Orion.

”So, while I can certainly try to help guide you through the theory, Orion... the only one who can truly solve this specific problem is you yourself. The magic is a mirror. It reflects what you give it.”

Lupin crossed his arms. ”Tell me about the memories you use. When you cast the spell on the train, and again just now in the alley... what exactly were you focusing on?”

Orion didn’t hesitate. He analyzed his own process with clinical detachment.

”I utilize memories that logically constitute a high degree of positive emotion,” Orion explained smoothly. ”For instance, I recently orchestrated a rather... complex prank. The sheer, unadulterated hilarity and the successful execution of that event provided a massive spike of triumph. I have also used the satisfaction of outsmarting opponents, or even the simple, petty amusement of successfully annoying my brother.”

He frowned slightly. ”They are potent, joyful memories. The shield they generate is practically solid. But the form remains formless.”

Lupin nodded slowly, a look of profound understanding washing over his scarred face.

”I see,” Lupin murmured. ”In that case, Orion, I would like to propose a hypothesis.”

He gestured to the empty air between them.

”Every witch or wizard utilizes the Patronus in a different way, because the foundation of their strong emotions varies. Every person is fundamentally different,” Lupin explained gently. ”In your case, I believe the reason why you are perfectly capable of creating a massive Patronus shield, but absolutely incapable of forming a corporeal guardian, boils down to one specific issue: manufactured happiness.”

Orion blinked, his brow furrowing. ”Manufactured?”

”Yes,” Lupin nodded. ”You possess an incredibly sharp, highly analytical mind. You spend too much time analyzing your own experiences, deciding which memories should logically make you the happiest, and then you use them as fuel. You deploy them like tactical assets.”

Lupin offered a sympathetic smile.

”And sure, that methodology works to a degree. The magic responds to the positive intent, hence the incredibly dense shield. But the emotions in those specific memories... they are not fully realized. They are intellectualized. You are observing your own joy from the outside, appreciating the success of the prank or the victory of the argument, rather than simply surrendering to the feeling itself.”

Lupin took a step closer, his voice dropping into a quiet, instructional tone.

”Instead of searching your mind for memories that should make you happy based on success or humor,” Lupin advised, ”my advice would be to stop analyzing. Try and think of a time when you weren’t trying to achieve anything. A time when you weren’t outsmarting anyone. A time when you were just... simply, unreservedly happy.”

Lupin tilted his head. ”You understand the difference, right?”

Orion stood silently in the freezing street. His Level 2 Mind Arts usually categorized information instantly, but this required a different kind of sorting.

A time when I was just happy, Orion thought, searching the vast, organized archives of his mental ’Safe Room’.

He bypassed the victories. He bypassed the moments of chaotic triumph.

He did have other memories. Quiet ones. But the reason he had never attempted to use them as fuel for the Patronus was because his analytical mind had always categorized them differently. He had labeled them as ’Peaceful’ rather than ’Joyful’.

He thought of the long, quiet afternoons sitting in the drawing room at Malfoy Manor, simply listening to Narcissa talk about mundane things, the sunlight warming the Persian rugs, feeling completely, unconditionally safe.

He thought of the recent hours spent sitting on a dusty desk in an abandoned classroom, watching Luna Lovegood draw absurd diagrams while he practiced fire spells, existing in a space entirely devoid of expectations, judgment, or political maneuvering.

Would peace work instead of ecstatic joy? Orion wondered, a sudden, profound realization settling over him. If the Dementor represents absolute despair and chaos... then absolute, unshakeable peace is its direct antithesis.

He felt a sudden shift in his magical core, as if a rusted lock had finally clicked open.

”I think,” Orion started to say, looking up at Lupin, preparing to test the new theory immediately. ”I think I understand—”

BOOOOOM!

A massive, concussive explosion shattered the quiet of the village.

The sound was deafening, echoing off the snow-covered mountains surrounding Hogsmeade. The ground beneath their boots trembled violently.

Orion spun around, his wand snapping up instinctively.

Lupin froze, his amber eyes widening in absolute horror as he looked toward the northern outskirts of the village. Plumes of thick, black smoke were already rising into the grey sky above the rooftops.

”The Shrieking Shack,” Lupin breathed, the color draining entirely from his scarred face.

He looked at Orion, his voice cracking with sheer, unadulterated panic.

”Tonks is there.”
