Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 926: Chapter 926: Going to the Market

”I’ll go in and check on them.” These two children were taken care of by Du Fengying since they were young, and she really can’t go a day without seeing them.

The breakfast at home today was made by Jing Chu, Zhao Xiaoli, and Jiang Xinyu.

Rice porridge, boiled salted eggs, pancakes, stir-fried shredded potatoes, and stir-fried cabbage with sliced meat.

Outside, Chaoyang’s voice was heard, and soon after, he and his sister came in.

Jiang Xinyu smiled and asked, ”Have you all eaten?”

They all nodded. None of the children looked at the dining table.

”Is anyone still hungry? There are more pancakes. Want some?”

”Teacher Jiang, we’re all full.”

Guodong and Zhao Xiaoqiang quickened their eating pace.

Shi Jing and Jianbin were also eager but were kept in check by a few words from Wei Kaiyun.

Jing Chu put down her chopsticks. ”I’m full, you all take your time eating.” After saying that, she went over and took Li Xue’s hand, and they went outside together.

”I’ll wash my hands first; you wait for me inside.”

”Jing Chu, your room is so warm.”

”Yes, my brother is responsible for adding coal at midnight. I’ll change clothes quickly, and we’ll go with my brother. My Aunt Jiang instructed them to accompany us.” Jing Chu said with a smile.

She really didn’t take it to heart because the people here are simple and honest, nothing would happen.

”Xue’er, why aren’t you wearing a hat?”

”I’m afraid of being seen by others.”

”What’s there to be afraid of? Wearing a hat is warmer. Let’s go back and get one, we’ll both wear them.

Feifei won’t go with us. Didn’t you see how cute Feifei looks in a hat?”

Li Xue sat on the kang, feeling warm and thinking how good Teacher Jiang was to her and her brother.

After putting on her coat, Jing Chu and Li Xue went out.

The boys were already waiting outside. ”Brother, we’re going back with Li Xue to get hats, and you bring a basket and a bag, just in case there’s something good we can’t bring back.”

Chaoyang laughed from the side, already used to the way his sister and brother interacted; the sister gave orders, and the brother executed them.

”Sister Jing Chu, I’ll carry a basket and bring a bag too.”

”Smart, let’s go.”

After they left, the courtyard quieted down a lot.

Jianbin and Shi Jing were also eager to leave, but having been scolded earlier, they didn’t dare to urge, though it was hard for them to sit or stand still.

Once everything was in order at home, Wei Kaiyun finally gave the order to set off.

Wei Kaiyun, Han Xiangjun, and Shang Zhenkun walked behind the two children.

”Shall we go up the mountain to take a look?”

”Sure, let’s go tomorrow. Last time, we found a nest of wild boars, but we also encountered wolves.”

”Those two little brats definitely want to go,” Han Xiangjun said with a laugh.

”Even if they want to go, they know they can’t. The wife definitely won’t agree, she’s already told them that they can only follow adults to the mountain after they turn twelve.”

”Your wife always has a smile, but the kids still listen to her.

But don’t you treat Shi Jing and Feifei quite differently?”

”Isn’t that normal?”

”Normal what! Luckily Shi Jing doesn’t mind.”

Wei Kaiyun shook his head with a smile. ”It’s not what you think, that little brat follows Feifei’s every word too.”

”Yeah, if I had such a daughter, I’d spoil her the same way.”

Old Yang and Zhao Xiaoli were the last to come out, not in a hurry, they were just here to join in the fun.

Along the way, they encountered many people, and the village’s ox and donkey carts were all out.

”Wife, should we go back and drive? I’m afraid you’ll get tired.”

”No need, we’ll walk slowly. It’s a rare opportunity.”

Old Yang thought so too; the couple rarely had the chance to go to the market together.

Jiang Xinyu and Du Fengying busied themselves in the kitchen, one was kneading dough, and the other chopping meat stuffing.

Yesterday, Wei Kaiyun had already cleaned the offal, so two batches were stewing in the big pot.

”Sister Du, once the meat stuffing is ready, you can go do your thing. I see you bought a lot of cloth; do you want to make quilt covers?”

”Yes, they’re all new quilts; putting on covers keeps them clean.”

”That’s good, you can go ahead. I’ll manage here.”

”Okay, I’ll go watch those two kids in your room.”

This morning, Shi Jing said he wanted three-flavor stuffed buns, which they’ll make for lunch.

The stewed meat was simmering on low heat, so Jiang Xinyu went to her daughter’s room.

The little girl was sitting on the kang, reading a book placed on the table.

”Mom, are you done?”

”Yes. Why don’t you go out and have a look?”

”Look at people? I don’t want to, it’s too cold. There’s nothing better than reading at home.”

”Alright, just take care of your eyes.”

”I know, mom, where’s Aunt Du?”

”Sewing.”

”Mom, here, you keep these; they’re all good things. I’ve made a pretense, saying they’re stored in the Capital’s basement.”

”Hmm, you don’t want to keep them?”

”No, just keep them, mom. When Uncle Han goes back, give him more money, ask him to help me collect books and paintings.”

”Sure, I’ll give him ten thousand yuan, if that’s not enough, he can cover it for now.”

”Mom, how about we two go to the Capital next year?”

”Alright. I’ll take you there then.”

Jiang Xinyu put away the few boxes her daughter had placed on the floor. She didn’t check the contents, but since her daughter said they were good things, they must be valuable.

Jiang Xinyu reminded her daughter once again not to focus too much on reading, then went to the main room to check the fire and take out the pig liver before it got too tough and unappetizing.

The small intestine was left for sausage-making in a few days. It can be stored longer, and with so many people at home, they need good food every day. Thankfully, the winter here is cold, making it better than a refrigerator.

But once there is some spare time in the coming days, she’ll have Wei Kaiyun look into heating systems because rural folk heating isn’t complicated; as long as the return water is sorted, there shouldn’t be any issues.

After washing her hands, she helped Du Fengying with the quilt covers. She thought of getting a sewing machine; with it, they wouldn’t have to do it painstakingly by hand for years, which is convenient.

”Sister Du, your quilt covers are too plain.”

”Floral ones are too expensive. These are fine for self-use.”

”I still have a lot of cloth; why not use those?”

”No need, I think these are just fine.

Xinyu, today Shuanzipo came by to ask if I could make them bread; they want to take two pounds each home for Chinese New Year on the twenty-ninth.”

”Hmm. We have all the ingredients at home.”

”They said they’ll provide their own ingredients and discussed buying eggs today, but there’s no sugar.”

”Old Wei brought back quite a bit of sugar this time. Feel free to use it.”

”That’s generous of you.”

”They’re earning money for us, and besides, they have a good relationship with Old Wei. Some sugar, oil, or flour isn’t a big deal.

It’s just a stroke of luck that I have it; if not, even with the intention, it wouldn’t have been possible in the past.”

”You’re generous; these things are quite precious.”
