Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 608: 608 Xiwang

Watching the three of them carefully writing stroke by stroke, Jiang Xinyu quietly stepped out again.

She returned to her room, lay down on the kang, and wondered if Wei Kaiyun had already boarded the bus. She hoped he would have a smooth trip. Judging by what Old Yang said, someone should be accompanying him, which made it a lot safer.

If he were alone, she would still be worried.

She fell asleep unknowingly, and an hour later, she woke up needing to relieve herself. Her belly was bigger now, and she always felt the urge to go to the bathroom.

Upon returning, she saw the three children working on problems, all of which were calculation problems and simple application questions.

Sister-in-law Liu had already started preparing lunch, and she was doing the laundry.

At half past ten, Jianbin was in charge of starting the fire, and Sister-in-law Liu was cooking dish dough, mixing vegetables and dough, which was called by this name here.

In another pot, Shi Jing was making a fire, cooking millet porridge, which would be stored in a thermos to keep it warm when served.

At half past eleven, the pots were taken off the stove and placed on a coverlet, waiting for the steam to dissipate before being put into the basket.

At twelve, Sister-in-law Liu pushed the cart to deliver the meal, and the three children followed along, curious as they were.

Taking advantage of being alone at home, Jiang Xinyu put out some more food.

Sister-in-law Liu was pushing the cart ahead, and if they encountered a muddy spot, the two boys would help push the cart.

Since Sister-in-law Liu didn’t have children, she treated these three as treasures. Seeing such sensible children melted her heart.

They didn’t reach the field’s edge until half past twelve. From a distance, they saw the five working but didn’t call out, waiting at the edge of the field.

The workers noticed the meal delivery. Shang Zhenkun hurriedly had everyone wash their hands, then the five of them walked over.

After eating, Li Yungui initially wanted to continue working, but Shang Zhenkun declined, ”Village Chief Li, there is no rush. It’s better to rest a bit.

Take the three kids home. After all, these are chemicals; it’s not good for children. Xiao Jiang is alone at home and isn’t reassured.”

Sister-in-law Liu nodded obediently, packed up the leftover food, and then headed home.

Old Yang saw Wei Kaiyun off and noticed the four new sprayers were somewhat improved over the previous ones. After all, practice makes perfect.

There was nothing much to do in the afternoon, just preparing some food, including some wood ears and mushrooms, to send over to Jiang Xinyu.

Both sides were kept busy, and three days later, Wei Kaiyun’s twenty-five acres of land were all sprayed with chemicals.

Seeing there was still some chemical left, Li Yungui decided to use it all up.

No one had objections, as the rest took turns helping with the work, with only Shang Zhenkun and Li Yungui accompanying the entire process.

Three more days passed, and the household’s chemical supply was used up, wrapping up this round of work.

Now it was time to observe the results. Wild grass and wild vegetables had started popping up elsewhere, but the fields treated with chemicals a few days ago remained pristine. Li Yungui would check the fields every day.

He had a beaming smile every day. He found Jiang Xinyu, ”Teacher Jiang, this chemical definitely works. Do you have any left at home? Could you make some more? I’ll bring people to clear the wild areas today, as there are several plots still idle.”

”Alright, Village Chief Li, come pick it up tomorrow, but be sure not to overuse it, or it’ll be a problem if nothing sprouts.”

”Alright, I understand. We’ll see how much we can clear in the coming days.”

Wei Kaiyun was at the tractor factory, arranging for the installation of a rotary cultivator with the engineers.

”Master Li, I’m preparing to clear land. Do you think the rotary cultivator blades might get damaged by small stones?”

”I’ll bring you two extras. Our factory manager has agreed to apply for these two types of machinery for you on an honorary basis. However, you need to pay the cost price for these two machines.”

”Thank you to the management.” He hadn’t expected such a good deal, though he had no way to avoid accruing benefits for others either.

The seeder had also been improved. Each piece of machinery was paired, loaded into the tractor’s carriage.

The tractor factory also sold Wei Kaiyun a thousand pounds of diesel, stored in large oil drums. This should be enough diesel for spring planting.

The day before leaving, Wei Kaiyun specifically visited the main building to bring back some items for his wife and kids. Having made a trip, he couldn’t return empty-handed.

He bought his daughter her favorite books, found at the recycling center, amounting to three large bags. He also bought twenty comic books for the two boys.

He also saw wooden pistols and swords, getting one set for each of the three kids, buying a fourth for the one his wife was expecting.

For his wife, he bought some fabric and a pair of beautiful white leather shoes. Though unsuitable for outside wear in the village, she could wear them indoors.

C City’s supplies were particularly good, and at a high cost, Wei Kaiyun bought some sausages and a hundred pounds of rice, though much of it was broken, it was rice nonetheless, no?

He bought twenty pounds of dried noodles, fifty pounds of millet, and two large barrels of soybean oil, only then setting off for home on the tractor the next day.

Over these days, he had learned from the engineers how to repair the tractor. For unforeseen situations, he’d take his time to learn slowly later.

Some easily worn parts were also taken as spares.

The two took turns driving because it was still quite chilly in the mornings and evenings, both wearing heavy coats and cotton hats. Though the walking tractor had no cabin, their eagerness to return home compelled them to take turns resting while the tractor remained running.

Unexpectedly, it was faster than the train, and they arrived at the city in three days and two nights.

Everyone along the way would watch them, as it was quite an impressive sight.

Wei Kaiyun spoke only a few words with Old Yang and loaded the chemicals Jiang Xinyu needed before departure; everything required was available, transported by train from the Provincial Capital.

”Xiao Wei, I’ll visit tomorrow,”

”How about coming today?”

”No, I have something to attend to in the evening.”

”Suit yourself. It’s time to settle things here.”

”Hmm. I have it under control. I’m also managing my men.”

Wei Kaiyun had a glass of water before leaving.

Driving from the city to the village, the tractor drew everyone’s attention.

It was already three in the afternoon when he returned to the village. As the tractor entered, Li Yungui had already heard and hurried to Wei Kaiyun’s home.

At the entrance, he spotted the red tractor, circled around it several times out of curiosity, touching this and that.

Almost the entire village gathered around.

Originally, Wei Kaiyun was about to take a bath, but seeing so many people outside, he really couldn’t avoid coming out, so he stepped out to introduce it to everyone.

”Starting tomorrow morning at eight, we’ll be doing a trial. Everyone come to the fields then. I’m not good with farming, so I’ll need everyone’s guidance.”
