Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

”Sis, it’s too dangerous for a girl like you to go out. You should stay home and take care of Dad.

Moreover, it’s too dangerous for a girl like you to go out. We don’t know what’s going on outside, what kind of people are around.”

Hearing her younger brother’s words, Xiao Yan felt touched. ”Red Army, you should stay. You’re the eldest son of the family and need to take on the responsibility at home. Besides, Dad has Aunt Tian. Regardless of how it turns out, that’s Dad’s own choice. You stay, work hard, and strive to be officially transferred soon.

I have to report to the neighborhood committee tomorrow morning. Listen to your sis, I have been inquiring about the issue of young educated youths going to the countryside.

”Sis, why don’t you just get married now so you can stay? I can go work at the textile factory, and our little brother is still young, we won’t have to go to the countryside.”

”Red Army, you’re thinking too simply. Which family now would want to marry a person without a job? It won’t work, don’t argue with your sis. You stay here, it’s fine. I can really be a teacher, even though I have to work, it’s much easier than farming. It’s fine, some of my classmates are going to the countryside too, so we’ll have company.”

Xiao Yan was worried that her younger brother, at his age, wouldn’t be able to handle the heavy physical work.

”Sis, I’m worried about you.”

”Why worry? I’ll be fine, maybe I’ll be back in two or three years.

Alright, you two go to sleep, don’t worry about me.”

Xiao Yan returned to her room, lay on the bed, and shed tears. She genuinely didn’t want to go, but letting her fifteen-year-old brother go to the countryside was simply impossible.

Early the next morning, after breakfast, those going to work headed out, the little brother went to school, and Xiao Yan took her household registration booklet to the neighborhood committee.

Everything was sorted out, she got some food tickets, twenty yuan, and some industrial tickets.

She thought for a moment and decided to go to the big building and buy everything she needed.

At the very least, she needed to prepare two lunch boxes, a basin, a tea cup for drinking water, since she was going to the Northwest, she also needed to prepare two sets of clothes, she would use her own bedding, and also prepare toiletries.

She bought a lot of miscellaneous items and when she returned home, she saw her brother sitting dazedly in the courtyard.

Hearing movement, Jiang Hongjun saw his sister return.

”Red Army, I’ve bought a lot of supplies, help me think about what else I need?”

”Sis, have you confirmed when you’re leaving?”

”Half a month later, October 10th, at nine in the morning, by train. I’m going to the Northwest, and I’ve gotten everything figured out. I’ll be with two female classmates and three male classmates. You can be at ease now.”

”Sis, I was too selfish.”

”How could you be? You’re our family’s hope, you have to work hard. Sis is counting on you. My brother will surely become what he dreams to be, an engineer.

Alright, help me see if there’s anything else I need to buy?”

Jiang Hongjun looked at the things his sister bought and felt like it was still lacking a lot. Even if they took everything from home, it still didn’t feel enough.

At noon, the younger brother returned. Xiao Yan was stunned, ”Sicheng, why are you back?”

”Sis, school can’t hold classes now, everyone is studying the Little Red Book, I said I had a stomach ache and came home.”

”You can study the Little Red Book too?”

”But I think what they say is all wrong, they’ve gone crazy, I’d rather study the Little Red Book at home.”

Xiao Yan nodded, ”That’s fine, studying at home is the same, but you also have to study the textbooks. Your big brother is at home, let him teach you.”

Both younger brothers listened to their sister. ”Sis, let Dad go to school and ask for leave for our little brother, let him stay at home.”

”Alright, we’ll talk to Dad tonight.”

Jiang Guangxing was not in high spirits today. The woman he liked agreed to marry him, which should have been a happy occasion, but he had to send one of his children to the countryside.

He actually wanted Red Army to go, as he felt it was dangerous for a girl to leave, but he couldn’t say it directly, so he let the siblings discuss it.

At noon, after he finished lunch, he went to the union to get the marriage introduction letter. He also needed Director Wei’s signature.

Just at that moment he ran into Tian Mingyan, Sister Tian from the union laughingly congratulated them.

Then the two went together to the director’s office.

Wei Kaiyun had just finished lunch and was about to take a rest when Secretary Lu knocked on the door and said Tian Mingyan and Jiang Guangxing wanted to get married, they came to get his signature.

He called them in, Director Wei reviewed it and then signed, stamping it with his personal seal.

”Congratulations to you both, here’s ten yuan, five each from me as a contribution to your marriage, wishing you both a long and happy life together.”

”Thank you, Director Wei,” Jiang Guangxing said with a smile.

Tian Mingyan also thanked him, and the two left together.

Wei Kaiyun lay down on the bed to rest, he was a bit envious of Jiang Guangxing and Tian Mingyan, they could just get the certificate and marry, whereas he couldn’t. It was really frustrating.

The two left Wei Kaiyun’s office, chatting as they walked.

”Mr. Tian, shall we take leave on Monday to go to the civil affairs bureau? We’re skipping the banquet but I still need to help you move things.”

”Alright, I’ll go ask our team leader for leave in a bit.”

”Are you coming to my house for dinner tonight?”

Tian Mingyan shook her head, ”Not tonight, I’ll also start packing my things these days.”

After the two parted, they both returned to their respective workshops.

After Tian Mingyan asked for leave, many people in the workshop knew she was getting married. Though people hadn’t forgotten her scandal from a few years ago, it had been over five years now. They rarely mentioned it, especially since she was now divorced and had gotten her comeuppance.

So many people still congratulated her.

Jiang Guangxing also received a lot of congratulations.

Before work ended, Jia Xingzhi already knew about it, and he felt very disdainful. He still thought Tian Mingyan couldn’t have children, he just didn’t want to think about the fact that after half a year of marriage, his own wife hadn’t gotten pregnant.

But as he was no longer the workshop supervisor, he couldn’t afford to offend Jiang Guangxing.

He could only feel stifled within himself. Unable to vent, thinking of his own depressing household problems, he couldn’t help but sneer. Thinking of money, he thought it was just wishful thinking. He wouldn’t give her a single cent.

After work, Jiang Guangxing rode his bike home, and the four of them chatted while eating.

He already knew it was his daughter going to the countryside and was truly reluctant. Xiao Yan was his first child, although not a son, she was still the girl he cherished from an early age.

”Dad, I’m going to the Northwest, there are five classmates from my class going together. You can rest assured.”

Jiang Guangxing didn’t know what to say, except to keep nodding.

”Tomorrow I’ll give you fifty yuan, look at what else you need to buy, you never know how things will be there.”

”I understand, Dad. We’re leaving in half a month, they’re even providing us with meals on the train.”
