Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 64: 64 cannot bear to look directly

”I also hope for the best, but our textile factory doesn’t have that capability.”

Lu Changchun was out of words as well, knowing full well that this issue couldn’t be resolved. However, since someone below had submitted an application, it was necessary to bring it up at the meeting.

After the meeting ended, Jiang Xinyu followed behind Wei Kaiyun back to the office and handed over the meeting notes.

”Director Wei, the content of today’s meeting is all here.”

”Mm, I know. Secretary Jiang, what do you think about the union president’s proposal?”

”It’s not impossible to satisfy them. The textile factory can build dormitories; it’s just that the factory can’t bear all the expenses.”

”Oh? Then what should we do?”

”The factory can initially cover the building expenses, but whoever wants a room will have to pay for it. Prices will be based on years of service, and they can purchase them on their own. However, this may not be feasible this year. In these tough times, it’s best to be cautious.”

”Alright, when you have time, draft a detailed plan.”

”Yes! If there’s nothing else, I’ll head out.”

Jiang Xinyu lay on her desk, pondering the plan.

Once she had a rough idea, she submitted the plan to Wei Kaiyun before the end of the workday.

”Jiang Xinyu, you should treat me to dinner tonight.”

”Director Wei, it wouldn’t be appropriate. It would affect both you and me.”

”Why not? We are just discussing work as superior and subordinate.”

”This is just self-deception.” Jiang Xinyu despised him in her heart.

”How about this, Jiang Xinyu, I will hire you to cook for me, fifteen yuan a month. Of course, I’ll provide the food.”

”Director Wei, this makes it seem like I’m being unreasonable. Even if you pay me, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s just the two of us alone.”

”Then you come up with a solution. I can tolerate breakfast and lunch, but for dinner and weekends, I’d like something better.”

”Director Wei, there’s no need to pay. Just bring the food directly.”

”Alright, thank you, Jiang Xinyu.”

Wei Kaiyun was nearly moved to tears. Ever since he could remember, he’s been muddling through.

Jiang Xinyu actually wanted to say that Director Wei could start a family, but she was still unmarried and his subordinate. It was inappropriate to say such things.

”Actually, having you cook dinner for me has its advantages. From now on, I’ll try not to make you work overtime. Isn’t that good?”

Using public resources for personal gain, that’s exactly it. Otherwise, how would he get caught?

”Director Wei, time’s up, I’m off work.”

After going home, she decided on rice porridge, scallion pancakes, and spicy stir-fried radish slices for dinner.

At seven, Wei Kaiyun knocked on the door, and all the food was already set on the table.

”Director Wei, the ingredients are limited. Please make do.”

”It’s already very good. I’ll go home later and get you some dried seafood. Do you know how to cook it?”

”I should be able to. There’s no need to make a special delivery. Just bring it when you come for a meal tomorrow.”

”That won’t do; I’m waiting to eat it tomorrow.”

Look at you being so greedy. Didn’t see you this eager before I started cooking for you?

After dinner, Wei Kaiyun left in a hurry and returned with two burlap sacks ten minutes later.

”Inside are dried shrimp, shrimp skins, and seaweed, along with two dried fish.

This bag contains millet, glutinous rice, and some sweet potato flour.

I’ve brought everything over, where should I put it?”

”Put it in the side room then, but bring it in first. What do you want to eat tomorrow?

I still have cooked pork backbone here, I’ll soak the seaweed, and tomorrow evening we’ll have seaweed stew with cornbread.”

”Okay, eating more seaweed is good. Keep yourself from getting goiters.”

You know everything! Now Jiang Xinyu felt uncomfortable if she didn’t mentally criticize Wei Kaiyun a bit.

Jiang Xinyu looked at the white glutinous rice and thought if she could grind it into flour, she could make fried sticky rice cakes.

She just hadn’t prepared these in her space.

Wei Kaiyun helped hang everything on the wall before cycling off.

The next day, as Jiang Xinyu arrived at the office, she found an unsigned letter on the ground.

That meant it wasn’t intended for her. Such a situation, even thinking with her toes, she knew wasn’t good. Better leave it to the leaders. She’s just a small fry, no say in matters.

After helping Wei Kaiyun with his tea, Qian Jun and another arrived one after the other.

”Director Wei, I found an anonymous letter on your desk.”

”Secretary Jiang, in the future when this happens, you can handle it as you see fit.”

”Yes!” A secretary’s rule is absolute obedience.

Director Wei touched the tea mug, thinking it was indeed good to have a female secretary. All the trivial matters are taken care of, and she can even handle meals.

”Secretary Jiang, tomorrow’s Saturday. There’s a gathering; do you want to go?”

”What kind of gathering?”

”Well, it’s a meal where well-connected secretaries exchange information. You understand; we’re from the textile factory.”

”Playing to each other’s strengths?”

”That’s exactly the idea.”

”Will the grain station and supply and marketing cooperative come?”

”Do you have something you want to buy?” Qian Jun raised an eyebrow.

”Indeed, I want to ask about bicycle tickets; our textile factory at my level doesn’t have those.”

”You can borrow from Director Wei; he has them.”

”That’s not ideal. If I can get one myself, better not bother the boss. Where’s the gathering on Saturday?”

”In a courtyard near the steel mill. Want me to pick you up?” Qian Jun wanted to curry favor with Jiang Xinyu.

”It’s not convenient; could you take me there?”

”You’ve already shown your face at the last meeting, and most of the secretaries know you. What inconvenience is there?”

”Alright, but you don’t need to pick me up; that would look bad. I’ll go on my own; just tell me what time it starts?”

”One in the afternoon. It used to be that secretaries would gather for meals, but now with tight supply, that tradition has been canceled.”

”Oh, got it. I’ll be there by one, just the courtyard near the steel mill?”

”Yes, it’s a warehouse of the steel mill.”

At this moment, Wei Kaiyun called out, and the two hurriedly paused their conversation and entered the director’s office.

”You two, take a look at this anonymous letter.”

Qian Jun took it first, read it, and then passed it to Jiang Xinyu.

After reading it, Jiang Xinyu raised an eyebrow. However, since the experienced secretary Qian Jun didn’t speak, it was best for this rookie to remain silent and listen to the leader.

”What do you two think? Qian Jun, you first.”

”Director Wei, this incident is very serious, and we absolutely cannot allow such parasites to exist.”

”Okay, I will entrust you with investigating and gathering evidence for this matter. Everything must be based on facts.”

”Yes!” Qian Jun left the office.

”Secretary Jiang, what’s your take?”

”I’m not very familiar with the personal situations of the workers yet. This is a matter of character, and unless it’s confirmed, I think it should be handled with caution.

This could also possibly be retaliation or suppression, and most likely, it’s about taking down opponents to rise up.”

”Mm, let’s wait for Qian Jun’s investigation. You will be going to the county for a meeting later, just a routine meeting.”
