Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 56: 56 Chinese New Year

This year is my first New Year here, although I’m alone, Jiang Xinyu didn’t skimp on herself—sour and spicy tripe soup, vermicelli, minced garlic pig heart, white rice.

After eating to fullness, she lay on the kang and read a book to digest. She fell asleep unknowingly and was awakened by the cold, careless, hurriedly drinking a packet of cold medicine.

In the evening, she made dough to wrap dumplings. After eating a big bowl, she stored the leftovers in space to eat later.

On New Year’s Day, Jiang Xinyu also opened the door. Since she hadn’t finished mourning yet, and being a girl, there was no need to visit other houses to pay respects; she opened the door to welcome Wang Ailing.

Jiang Xinyu hadn’t prepared anything, no melon seeds, peanuts, or candies. Since others couldn’t even afford a meal, she couldn’t show off her wealth.

At ten o’clock, Kong Mengjie also came in.

”Xinyu, Happy New Year.”

”Happy New Year to you too, how are you adapting at the textile factory?”

”It’s okay, not too tiring, just the three shifts are too painful, I dislike the night shift the most.”

”Thinking about it, night shifts do seem uncomfortable.” Jiang Xinyu nodded in agreement. On New Year’s Day, she preferred not to find trouble.

She merely went along with her words, nothing to lose for herself.

Kong Mengjie stayed for a while before leaving, as she still wanted to brag elsewhere.

”Xinyu, I met Zhou Lihong on the way, she seems quite pitiful.” Wang Ailing brought up this topic after Kong Mengjie had left.

”Even though she’s pitiful, we can’t help much. If it weren’t for your uncle’s capabilities, perhaps it would be you whom everyone felt sorry for, right?”

”Yes, last night, I thought about beating those Zhou brothers up, really inhumane, my family never wronged them.”

”In this world, you can’t decide everything by taking action. It’s my uncle who blocked their path.

Sis, it’s like this in rural areas, what about in the factory?”

Wang Ailing fell silent; she had already experienced it and didn’t want to talk about it with Jiang Xinyu during the New Year.

Leaning on the kang, at a loss of words.

”Sis, I earned seventy yuan in the village last year.” Jiang Xinyu didn’t want to continue discussing this heavy topic.

”It was Uncle and Aunt’s?” This troublesome mouth, why did it deviate to this?

”Yeah, my work points only got me half a yuan. It’s really hard for rural people to make some money.”

”It’s like that for everyone. My family has four laborers, and after deducting the grain, there’s only a hundred and twenty left.”

”That’s good already, having leftovers, since some people in our village still owe the brigade.” The two sighed again!

Jiang Xinyu was close to going crazy; why were these the topics on New Year’s Day?

During lunchtime, Wang Ailing went home, even when Jiang Xinyu tried to persuade again, she didn’t stay for a meal. Food is precious now, and Wang Ailing felt embarrassed to eat at her place. Xinyu helped her so much, and being alone herself, not having the ability to take care of her, she couldn’t take advantage of her.

On the fourth day of the New Year, two textile factory workers left together. The village remained peaceful.

Only the Zhou Family was completely doomed since Zhou Jiaxing was taken away.

Every day, Zhou Lihong just watched over her little brother and sister; that irresponsible mother took all the money and left the second day after the incident.

She even went to her grandmother’s, but couldn’t find her at all. Perhaps the grandmother was hiding from her? Forget it, she must be able to raise her younger siblings.

”Sis, I’m hungry.” Her little brother looked at Zhou Lihong timidly.

”Changshun, wait a moment, sister will make you something to eat. Lily, don’t get off the kang, just sit there.”

After leaving the room to the hall, her tears finally fell, she was terrified but knew she had no right to be scared.

Wiping her tears dry, she moved a small bag of sweet potato flour from behind the bowl shelf. This was left by villagers as a way for the siblings to survive.

Boiling water, she grated a radish, added some salt, then stirred in a handful of sweet potato flour.

Once cooked, she gave each sibling a bowl, ”Sis, you eat too, you eat too.”

Zhou Lihong looked at the bowls handed by her siblings, her eyes reddening again.

”You two eat, I’ll get more from the pot, there’s still some.”

During a time like the New Year, there’s not even a bit of oiliness in the house. How would they manage in the future?

Suddenly heard someone calling her from outside. Since Dad’s incident, no one had come over.

When Zhou Lihong went outside, ”Why are you here?”

Jiang Xinyu didn’t mind her tone, this is just a silly girl.

She placed the snakeskin bag down, ”I dug these yams on the mountain, you can cook them for the siblings, steam or boil them, whichever works.”

”Jiang Xinyu!”

”Please don’t speak, everything will be fine.” Jiang Xinyu finished and left, on the fifth day of the New Year, still no sound from the Zhou Family, she’s sympathetic. These young kids affected by parents, pitiful.

Zhou Lihong looked at Jiang Xinyu leaving with a complicated expression, unexpectedly, the one reaching out was her.

As Jiang Xinyu delivered the yams, she felt a bit relieved, it’s undeserving that the family is punished, especially those two little kids.

Helping Zhou Lihong was also because she did not resent her father, nor abandon her siblings. People like that won’t turn bad.

”Xinyu.”

Jiang Xinyu had already noticed the three across, the two in military outfits were conspicuous.

”Aunt, Brother Kong, Second Brother Kong.”

The two brothers from the Kong Family nodded towards Jiang Xinyu.

”Xinyu, what were you doing at the Zhou place?”

”I delivered some yams, I’m worried the two little kids can’t hold on.”

”Xinyu truly is kind-hearted, willing to save food from her own mouth.”

Jiang Xinyu found it amusing, this person had imagined exactly right.

”Aunt, this is the limit of my capability, eating less myself is fine. Let’s stop chatting, I’m headed back, it’s tremendously cold.”

”Go ahead, would be nice if it could snow.”

Jiang Xinyu didn’t respond, left smiling, otherwise would endlessly stand here freezing.

Watching her leave, Niang San also walked back. Upon arriving home, Tian Shulan asked, ”How is she?”

Both brothers nodded, Tian Shulan understood that both sons had interest.

”She will start working after this month; both of you need to leave on the fifteenth—figure out who among you will pursue.”

Jiang Xinyu wasn’t aware of their conversation. If she knew, she’d likely scoff; their faces are truly thick.

At present, she had tried her best, and the results couldn’t be determined by her, being a nice person is fine, knowing that there’s a limit is necessary.

Zhou Lihong carried the bag into the kitchen, there must be dozens of pounds, right?

”Sis, who came?”

”Jiang Xinyu.”

”What did she come for?”

”She brought us food; if we save carefully, it can last a month.”
