NTR: Barbarian Harem Conquest

Griselda’s report was still hanging in the salt air when Kane raised his hand.

The elven helmsman saw the signal and brought the boat off the wind.

Canvas cracked once.

The hull settled into a slower, uneasy glide.

Faces turned toward him along the rail: commanders, crew, household, waiting for the next order in a silence that had nothing to do with discipline.

”Something’s wrong,” Kane said.

Thora stood up from the crate too fast.

The careful breathing she had been rationing broke on a sharp intake.

The bracelet on her ankle: plain metal, the first gift he had given her when they were in Greta’s village, had begun a rapid beep that didn’t belong to any ordinary alarm.

She looked down at it, then at him.

”Kane...”

He nodded once.

”Hold the rail. Do not try the mast.”

He went up himself, boots finding the ratlines, Mjoldr left sheathed at his hip for the climb.

From the crosstrees the island was clearly close: cliffs, the thin harbor cut, the wrong-colored smoke inland.

And under the surface between boat and stone, something moved.

Not current.

A long, dark displacement that made the water’s skin crawl in a line too straight for weather.

”Griselda.”

She was already opening her wings.

”Don’t go far,” Kane called down.

He dropped back to the deck and drew Mjoldr in the same motion.

”Eyes only. You feel the air change, you come back. No heroics over open water.”

Griselda took height in three hard beats.

Salt spray silvered her feathers.

From the deck, Kessa watched with her ears flat and her nose useless, hands tight on the rail.

Misha had already pulled the elven commanders into a tight knot near the helm.

”If he calls for speed, you give it without asking why,” Misha said.

”If he calls for hard about, you do not argue the trim. Firlia—lash anything that can become a projectile. Thora, sit before you fall.”

”I am standing,” Thora said through her teeth.

The bracelet kept beeping against her skin like a second pulse.

Above them, Griselda leveled into a safe arc, trying to map the approach without committing to the island’s air.

The closer she came to the cliff line, the more the atmosphere thickened: wrong pressure, a resistance that had nothing to do with wind shear.

Her wings stumbled once, feathers fighting her for a fraction of a second longer than they should have.

She corrected, jaw tight.

Griselda could still use them.

She could still keep the flight under control.

But every stroke made the next one harder.

She looked down.

On the dark sand of the shore, half in the wash, a Giant lay unmoving.

Forty feet of mass and limb, face turned toward the water, no rise of breath that she could see from height.

A body.

The wrong smoke inland had company on the beach.

Griselda banked to return.

Something in the water caught her shadow and decided it was prey.

”KANE—MOVE!”

Her voice cracked across the gap like a thrown blade.

Kane didn’t ask for detail.

”Sail fast! Hard for the open line—away from the cut! Now!”

The elven helmsman threw his weight into the tiller.

Canvas filled with a sound like a sail tearing and not quite tearing.

The boat surged.

Kessa cursed as the deck pitched.

Firlia drove a lashing around a crate with both hands.

Thora locked her free arm through a stay and held the compact axe against her ribs as if the weapon could argue with the sea.

The hull shook.

Something thrice the length of the boat moved under them: slow at first, then matching, a dark pressure that made the planks complain and the ballast complain harder.

Kane felt the recognition hit at the same time the system tried to surface a combat tag he did not need.

Mountain serpent had been a god’s familiar on land.

This was the water’s version.

Poseidon’s leviathan, or whatever this layer had named the same design: long enough to treat a coastal runner like a toy, thick enough that a single coil could break a keel, eyes somewhere in the deep that had already decided the flying shape and the wooden shape were the same meal.

”Griselda—height and distance!” Kane shouted.

”Don’t try the water!”

She was already climbing, wings fighting the wrong air, yellow eyes locked on the dark line under the surface as it tracked the boat’s turn.

”It is under you! Full length—I cannot see the end of it!”

”Then stop looking and stay above the mast line!”

The boat heeled hard as the helmsman took them off the island’s lee and into a run that put the wind on the quarter.

Spray came over the rail in sheets.

Kessa’s claws scored the wood where she held on.

One of the elven commanders lost his footing and caught himself on a line before the sea could claim him.

”What is it?” Misha demanded, braced beside Kane, hair plastered to her face by salt.

”Leviathan.”

Kane’s knuckles were white on Mjoldr’s haft.

”We do not fight it on a hull this size. We outrun the first pass, and we pray the second one comes slow.”

”And if it does not?”

”Then we learn how fast a Giant island can launch a boat of its own while we are still in one piece.”

The boat lifted a fraction and slammed back down hard enough to jar teeth.

Thora made a sound that was pure anger at her own ribs.

The bracelet’s beep had gone frantic, then steady again in a pattern that meant proximity without contact—yet.

”Firlia!” Kane snapped.

”Anything not lashed becomes a club when this thing bumps us again. Kessa, eyes on the surface breaks. If you see a ridge of water that should not be there, you call it before you try to smell it.”

”I cannot smell anything but salt and fear-sweat!” Kessa snarled, but her gaze was already sweeping the chop.

”There—port side, long line, moving with us!”

”Helmsman, starboard three points. Don’t give it a straight belly.”

The boat answered.

Canvas strained.

Griselda’s shadow crossed the deck once as she fought for altitude the wrong air did not want to give her.

Below, the dark length adjusted, patient as a god’s tool, and the island’s cliffs watched the small wooden thing run for deeper water with a forty-foot corpse on the sand and smoke still rising from a war that had started without them.

”Hold on!” the helmsman yelled.

The leviathan rose enough to break the surface in a long, slick ridge: scales the color of deep water under cloud, a fin like a sail, an eye the size of a shield that turned toward the boat with flat, ancient interest.

Kane met that gaze for a fraction of a second and felt the same cold recognition he had felt under the sight of serpent.
