NTR: Barbarian Harem Conquest

”I speak as if the current center is actively refining the same essence that is twisting the deep forest, and that every day spent pretending otherwise costs posts and blood your packs can no longer afford.”

Everyone listened.

”The Guardian’s fragment already acknowledged a variable the old pacts did not fully predict. The packs that saw it are already recalculating. I am offering the southern and river voices a place in that recalculation that does not leave them holding the empty bag when the pure-bloods finish raging.”

A longer silence settled.

Somewhere beyond the chamber wall, a service bell rang the second hour.

The three southern-aligned voices did not look at one another this time; each was weighing the same cold arithmetic Kane had already run: the cost of continued loyalty to a throne that treated their dead as acceptable data, versus the risk of backing an outsider who had already forced the forest’s power to give ground and was now asking them to hold doors while the head of that throne fell.

Vorra’s representative broke the quiet.

”Staged support. Not a full banner commitment. Warriors we trust will be in position on the junctions you named the hour the signal reaches us. They will suppress pure-blood countersignals and keep the approaches open. They will not chase fleeing hardliners into the outer districts or bleed themselves dry for a succession that fails to materialize. If the center does not change cleanly, our people withdraw, and the provisional pact ends the same hour. Acceptable?”

Kane nodded once.

”Acceptable. Signal method will be delivered through the same secondary path Marisa already uses for quiet movement. When it comes, you move. When the hall is held, and the immediate countersignals are suppressed, your warriors stand down and return to their prior posts with the guarantees I named intact.”

The river chief exhaled through his nose, a hard sound that was not quite agreement and not quite refusal.

”You understand that once our people are seen holding those corridors, there is no returning to the previous arrangement with Grathak. If you hesitate or fail, southern blood will still have been spent on your timing.”

”I do not intend to hesitate.”

Kane’s voice stayed level.

”And I do not intend to fail. The provisional pact is the first external piece. After this meeting, it is in motion. The rest of the board will move whether any of us are ready or not.”

The three of them studied him for another long moment, the outsider who had walked into their emperor’s halls, drawn blood from a manifestation of the Guardian, accepted formal terms in public, and was now quietly arranging corridor control for a change of center he still refused to name outright.

The arithmetic finished in silence.

Vorra’s representative gave a single, sharp nod.

”Then the provisional pact stands. We will stage the warriors. You will deliver the signal and the guarantees. And if the pure-bloods call it treachery, the southern and river packs will answer that we chose the side that still intends to face the sky instead of feeding on its residue.”

Kane rose.

The other three did the same.

No one offered an arm or a formal clasp; the agreement was colder and more practical than that.

The door opened onto the still-quiet service passage. The two war-chiefs left first, melting into separate routes. Vorra’s representative paused only long enough to meet Kane’s eyes once more.

”Two nights is a short window to move warriors without pure-blood notice. Do not waste it.”

”I won’t.”

She left.

Kane stood alone in the neutral chamber for a short time, listening to the palace wake fully around him.

The first external blade was now in motion. Southern and river warriors would begin quiet positioning before the day ended.

The private audience still sat one night away. The mask at the table would have to hold through one more full session of talks while the corridors under the palace slowly filled with people who had already chosen a different center.

Kane knew the meeting would not stay quiet.

Southern and river voices did not move warriors in a palace this tightly watched without someone carrying the scent of it upward.

He had expected a private probe, perhaps a delayed summons after the evening meal. Instead, the call came the moment he crossed back into the upper levels, two pure-blood attendants and a third warrior whose markings placed him among Grathak’s closer lackeys.

No explanation.

Only the directive: the emperor required his presence in the council hall immediately.

The hall was already full when he entered.

Not the full coalition banners this time.

A tighter, more dangerous concentration: pure-blood line heads in force, their personal retainers lining the walls, and Grathak himself seated on the raised throne with the heavy stillness of a predator that had stopped playing.

Red eyes tracked Kane from the moment he stepped through the arch.

The air felt thicker than it had during any of the formal talks.

Kane walked to the open space before the dais and stopped. Mjoldr remained across his back.

He didn’t bow.

Grathak’s voice rolled across the silence, low and almost conversational.

”So you have visited them privately. The southern bitch’s people. The river ones who already look at my outer posts like they are owed something. Why?”

Lying was pointless.

Grathak had always been able to taste falsehood in tone the way other beasts tasted blood.

Kane met the red stare directly and answered with the same flat clarity he had used in the underground.

”Most of them think you are an unfit ruler.”

”...”

The silence that followed was immediate and absolute.

It pressed against the ears like a physical weight. Then the pure-blood section erupted.

”Insolent—”

”The outsider forgets where he stands—”

”Put him down now—”

Grathak didn’t look at them.

His face remained grim, the earlier entertainment gone as if it had never existed.

One massive hand lifted, and the shouting cut off in ragged stages until only the emperor’s voice remained.

”What makes you come to that conclusion, barbarian? I am curious. The last time we exchanged blows, I was certain I had smashed the thoughts out of your skull and kept my foot on your chest while you remembered how to breathe. Most humans do not rise from that and then walk into my halls to call me unfit.”

Kane didn’t look away.

”You did. I am not going to refuse that. You put me through the wall and pinned me. The difference is that a human who went against a beast warrior twice his size, without injecting anything into his own blood, and still stood back up is already a history this empire does not like to write down. That is the first part.”
