NTR: Barbarian Harem Conquest

A high-ranking overseer intercepted them near the center of the grounds.

He was an older lion-marked male, heavy with muscle and authority, wearing a collar of polished bone that marked his position.

His eyes moved over Kessa with recognition and then over Kane with open calculation.

”Kessa. Back from the soft lands. And you brought a human who already smells like he’s been using you hard.”

The overseer’s nostrils flared.

”Strong stock, if the scent is anything to go by. The pens could use fresh bloodlines. One night. Controlled. We compensate ranked females who contribute.”

Kessa’s ears angled back.

”Not interested.”

The overseer smiled without warmth.

”Your mother contributed twice when she was younger. Produced useful results. Your refusal is noted, but the offer stands. The human can watch if he needs proof of fair treatment.”

Kane stepped forward until he was inside the overseer’s space.

The Empress’s Mark was still burning under his skin, feeding him the thick atmosphere of forced compliance that saturated the entire grounds.

”She said no. That ends it.”

The lion-marked male looked down at him, taller, heavier, used to humans who flinched.

”You’re in Berakamon, outsider. Ranked females contribute to the strength of the packs. It’s tradition. It’s expected. You’re not in a position to decide what she does with her body here.”

Kane’s voice stayed level.

”She’s already decided. And I’m in every position I need to make sure that decision sticks. Try to pressure her again, and I’ll break more than tradition.”

The air between them went tight. Several nearby handlers stopped what they were doing.

The overseer’s hand twitched toward a short blade at his belt. Kessa shifted her weight, ready.

Griselda’s wings opened a fraction.

Then the overseer laughed once, short and humorless, and stepped back.

”Sharp little human. Fine. The refusal is recorded. But the deeper pens will still be watching you. Grathak likes strong blood. He likes it even more when it resists first.”

He walked away without another word.

The handlers returned to their work. The low, constant sounds of the pens, bodies moving, occasional cries, the wet rhythm of someone being used, filled the space again.

Kane exhaled slowly. The Mark under his skin cooled only a little.

Kessa touched his arm once, briefly.

”You didn’t kill him. That’s progress.”

”I wanted to.”

”I know. That’s why I brought you here first. If you can’t walk through the outer pens without drawing an axe, you’ll die in the deeper ones before you ever reach Grathak.”

They continued the slow circuit.

In one stall, a young human male was chained by the wrists while two female beastkin took turns using him.

He was hard, his body responding whether he wanted it to or not, his face turned toward the wall.

In another, an elven woman with empty eyes nursed a half-beast infant while a handler waited nearby with a ledger.

Further down, a broken-looking wolfkin female was being examined by a healer who spoke about her ”remaining usefulness” in clinical tones while she stared at the ground.

Kane did not look away.

He forced himself to see every detail.

By the time they reached the far end of the outer grounds, his shoulders were tight and his expression carved from stone.

Griselda spoke softly.

”This is what he calls freedom.”

Kessa’s answer was quiet and tired.

”This is what he calls strength. The packs stay loyal because they get to take. The ones who get taken learn to survive, or they stop being a problem. It works. Until something stronger than the packs decides it doesn’t want to play by those rules.”

They turned back toward the exit.

On a high stone terrace overlooking the entire outer grounds, a lone figure stood in a dark robe, long black hair moving slightly in the wind.

Marisa watched them without moving.

Even at that distance, Kane felt the weight of her attention.

She did not raise a hand or call out. She simply observed until they passed back through the gates, then turned and disappeared into the upper levels of the settlement.

Outside the palisade, the air felt cleaner, though the scent of the pens clung to their clothes and skin.

Kane walked in silence for a long stretch. Kessa stayed close without touching him. Griselda kept her wings tight and her eyes on the rooftops.

Finally, he spoke.

”The deeper ones are worse.”

”Yes,” Kessa said.

”Much worse. The outer pens are for utility and bloodlines. The deep pens are for the ones Grathak wants broken properly, or the ones he wants to keep as examples. We don’t go there unless we have no choice.”

Kane adjusted Mjoldr on his shoulder.

”Then we keep walking the outer circles until I understand how far this system reaches. And when Grathak finally calls for me, I won’t be surprised by what he thinks strength looks like.”

Kessa glanced up at him.

”You’re still planning to talk to him.”

”I’m planning to survive him. Talking is optional.”

They left the outer breeding grounds in silence.

The smell clung to their clothes and hair even after the gates closed behind them.

Kane walked with his shoulders tight, the Empress’s Mark still pulsing in irregular waves under his skin.

Kessa stayed close without touching him. Griselda kept her wings folded so tightly the feathers looked almost brittle.

No one spoke until the pens were out of sight and the normal noise of the settlement began to replace the low, constant sounds of the enclosures.

Kessa finally broke the quiet.

”You needed to see it. Now you have. The night market will feel almost clean after that.”

Kane adjusted Mjoldr on his shoulder.

”Nothing here feels clean.”

”No,” she agreed.

”But some places are useful. The market is one of them.”

Night had fully settled by the time they reached the lower terraces where the market sprawled.

Open stalls lined a wide, uneven plaza lit by hanging oil lamps and low braziers.

The air was thick with the smell of roasting meat, spilled wine, hot metal, and too many bodies pressed into one space.

Beastkin of every stripe and rank moved between the stalls.

Some traded blades and armor.

Others sold information in low voices over cups of dark liquor.

A few offered more personal services with open gestures and open prices.
