NTR: Barbarian Harem Conquest

”He is not what I expected when I sent you north.”

”Neither am I.”

”No.”

A faint breath of something that might have been amusement crossed Slovia’s face.

”You are not. You stood in that chamber this morning and spoke for him without flinching. The ministers saw it. I saw it. You have become someone the empire must now account for, not simply protect.”

Misha’s eyes held her mother’s without wavering.

”I am still your daughter. That has not changed.”

”It has changed everything.”

Slovia looked back toward the maps, though her hand remained under Misha’s.

The inked lines of rivers and passes seemed different now, less absolute.

Ninety-seven days.

The number sat between them like a third presence. The devils would not care about the careful structures of an empire ruled only by women.

They would not care about the old distrust of men. They would only care about the strength that stood in their way.

”He intends to unite every fractured piece under one banner,” Slovia said.

”Beastmen. Elves. The southern courts. Us. It is an arrogant plan. Possibly a fatal one.”

”It is the only plan that has a chance,” Misha answered.

”And he will not do it alone. That is why he is here. That is why I am still here.”

Slovia’s fingers tightened fractionally under her daughter’s.

”If he fails—”

”Then we fail with him. Or we find another way. But I will not return to the way things were before he took me north. I cannot.”

The empress studied the lean girl beside her for a long time. The weak heart that had once defined every decision was gone, replaced by something steadier. The child who had run after her through these halls now sat as an equal, offering neither accusation nor absolution, only the quiet fact of her continued presence.

”You always did refuse to stay where I put you,” Slovia murmured.

”You taught me that.”

A real smile touched the empress’s mouth this time, small, tired, and genuine.

She turned her hand over beneath Misha’s so their palms met fully.

”Then we will see what the next ninety-seven days make of all of us,” she said.

”Your husband has my cooperation. You have... whatever remains of the mother who did not put you down when the healers advised it. That will have to be enough for now.”

Misha’s fingers closed around hers.

”It is enough.”

Slovia’s hand rose and settled on Misha’s hair.

The touch was light at first, almost uncertain, the way a woman who had spent decades ruling with iron rather than tenderness might reach for something she had nearly forgotten how to hold.

Her fingers moved slowly, smoothing the strands back from her daughter’s face, tracing the familiar shape of a brow she had once watched burn with fever and still refuse to close its eyes.

Misha chuckled under the contact, a soft, surprised sound that belonged more to the child who had once followed her through these halls than to the woman who had just stood unbroken before the full council of Milfheim.

”Even if I were to fall,” Slovia said, voice low and steady, ”I will make sure you stand tall.”

Misha’s golden eyes watered at once.

The tears did not fall, but they gathered, turning the light in them bright and fragile.

She shook her head once, the motion small beneath her mother’s palm.

”You never fall, Mother. I want you to be tall so I can be beside you like always.”

Slovia looked at her daughter for a long moment.

The maps on the table, the inked borders, the countdown of ninety-seven days, all of it receded.

What remained was the lean young woman sitting close enough that their knees nearly touched, the same blood that had once struggled to keep a tiny heart beating now speaking with certainty.

A smile touched the empress’s mouth.

It wasn’t the calculated curve she offered ministers or the satisfaction she had shown the barbarian the night before.

This one was smaller, real, and almost tired.

She was not smiling because of the agreement she had just struck with Kane.

That agreement would bring death.

Possibly her own.

The devils would not negotiate, and the alliances still left to forge would demand blood before they offered any lasting strength.

Slovia had never feared dying.

She had prepared for it the way she prepared for every winter campaign and every succession crisis, by making certain the empire would continue without her.

But sitting here, watching the girl she had once expected to lose meet her gaze without flinching, something quieter moved through her.

The fear that had lived beneath every hard decision, the fear that the weak heart would fail, that the child would vanish, that everything she had built would mean nothing if that small life ended, finally loosened its grip.

Her daughter was braver than she herself had been at the same age.

That knowledge did not wound.

It settled.

”I’m proud of you.”

She leaned forward and pressed a kiss to Misha’s forehead.

The contact was brief, warm, and deliberately gentle. When she drew back, she kept her hand in her daughter’s hair, thumb brushing once more along the temple.

”And you were never weak,” she continued.

”You are my blood. And you have been blessed by the gods.”

The words carried the weight of every long night Slovia had spent reading healer reports by lamplight, every time she had refused the quiet suggestions that a fragile heir might be better replaced.

The gods had marked the girl from birth, had given her a heart that stuttered and threatened to stop, had forced her to fight for every ordinary breath other children took for granted.

Yet the same blood that ran through the empress’s own veins had refused to yield.

That refusal was not weakness. It was the oldest strength Slovia knew.

Misha’s hand came up and covered her mother’s where it rested against her hair. Her fingers were cooler, thinner, but steady.

”I don’t want gods,” she said.

”I want you.”

The simple sentence landed with more force than any formal declaration spoken in the council chamber that morning.

Slovia felt it settle behind her ribs. She had spent so many years being the empress first that the idea of being wanted simply as a mother still felt almost foreign.

Yet here was the proof, sitting beside her, eyes bright with unshed tears, choosing the woman who had sent her north over any divine favor that might have eased the path.

Slovia’s thumb continued its slow path through Misha’s hair. The war room remained quiet around them.

”You have him now,” Slovia said after a while.
