NTR: Barbarian Harem Conquest

”A system that works as long as the strongest stay strong,” Kane answered.

”And collapses the moment something stronger than the packs arrives and doesn’t care about your customs.”

Razan’s red eyes narrowed.

”You mean your demons.”

”I mean whatever is leaking into the deep forest and turning ordinary beasts into mutants. Your outer packs are already feeling it. The deeper ones will feel it harder.”

Lira watched Kane over the rim of her cup, interest still present but tempered now by the presence of her mate and daughter.

”Kessa is different than when she left,” she said.

”Stronger. Clearer. Happier. That isn’t nothing.”

Kessa glanced at her mother, surprised by the softer tone.

Razan was less moved.

”Happier does not mean safer. You are still an outsider with no bloodline here and a habit of collecting females. When the novelty of the tournament winner fades, what happens to my daughter’s place?”

Kane met the older male’s stare directly.

”She keeps whatever place she earns. Same as everyone else in these streets. I don’t carry people who can’t stand on their own, and Kessa has never needed me to carry her.”

Lira’s mouth curved slightly at that.

Razan did not smile, but the sharpest edge of his hostility dulled by a fraction.

He tore a piece of meat, chewed, and spoke again only after swallowing.

”You will stay under my roof for now. You will continue to walk carefully. And if my mate’s cycle spikes again, you will remember what I told you at the gate.”

Kessa muttered under her breath,

”If her cycle spikes again, I am locking her in the storage room.”

Lira heard it and laughed, low and unconcerned.

”You can try, little one. You can try.”

The rest of the meal passed in thinner tension than the morning had carried. Razan remained unconvinced, but he was no longer actively looking for a reason to throw them out.

Lira’s attention toward Kane had cooled from open heat into something more assessing, still interested, but no longer ready to crawl into the guest house that night.

Kessa stayed pressed close to Kane’s side, territorial and quietly pleased that her mother had at least acknowledged the change in her.

When they finally returned to the guest house, the compound was settling into night sounds. Distant challenges still rose from the outer streets, but they felt farther away.

Kessa dropped onto the bed with a long breath.

”One day down. My father didn’t try to kill you. My mother only half-propositioned you. That counts as a successful visit by local standards.”

Kane set Mjoldr down and glanced toward the main house, where Lira’s silhouette moved past a lit window.

”She still smells interested.”

”She always smells interested when a strong male is under the roof. Ignore it. I will handle her if she pushes.”

Griselda spoke from her corner for the first time in hours.

”The packs are watching us more closely after today. The challenge this morning and the way you shut down the invitations have already moved through the lower circles. Tomorrow will be different.”

Kane nodded.

”Tomorrow we keep walking. I want to see how deep the outer system goes before anyone decides we’ve stayed long enough.”

Morning came grey and heavy.

Kessa was already awake when Kane opened his eyes.

She sat on the edge of the bed lacing her wraps, striped tail coiled tight with a tension that had nothing to do with heat.

”We’re going to the outer pens today,” she said without looking at him.

”You need to see them before anyone decides to show you the deeper ones. The deeper ones are worse. These are just the ones they let outsiders smell.”

Griselda was already standing by the door, wings folded so tightly the feathers looked almost rigid.

Kane sat up and reached for his boots.

”How bad?”

Kessa finally glanced at him. Her expression was flat.

”Bad enough that most humans who see them either try to burn the place down or join the system. Try not to do either on the first visit.”

They left the compound without eating.

Razan watched them go from the porch but said nothing.

Lira was nowhere in sight.

The outer breeding grounds sat on the southern edge of the settlement, behind a second palisade of blackened timber and bone.

The smell reached them before the gates did: sweat, sex, fear, unwashed bodies, and the thick, sweet-rot scent of too many people kept in too little space for too long.

Two heavy guards opened the gate when they recognized Kessa.

Their eyes lingered on Griselda with open interest and on Kane with open dislike.

Inside, the pens were arranged in long open-air rows under partial roofs.

Not cages exactly, more like reinforced stalls and low-walled enclosures.

Some held single occupants. Others held groups.

Humans. Elves. A few weaker beastkin who had lost challenges or debts.

Most wore little more than scraps of cloth or nothing at all.

Some looked relatively intact, fed, clean enough, eyes still sharp.

Others sat or lay in ways that showed they had stopped caring what happened to their bodies.

A human woman in the nearest stall was on her hands and knees while a thick-shouldered beastkin male mounted her from behind with relentless rhythm.

Neither of them looked at the visitors.

The male finished, pulled out, and left without a word. The woman stayed where she was for a moment, then slowly pushed herself into a sitting position and reached for a water skin with the same empty efficiency someone else might use to sweep a floor.

Kane’s jaw tightened.

The Empress’s Mark under his skin flared hot and sharp, resistance to compulsion and domination flooding his senses until his teeth ached. He kept walking.

Kessa spoke quietly as they moved down the central path.

”These are the outer stock. Captured in raids, bought from other packs, or taken as payment for debts. The ones who keep their minds and stay useful get better food and fewer hands on them. The ones who break get used harder and replaced faster. Grathak’s system doesn’t waste time pretending this is anything else.”

Griselda’s voice was low.

”How many of them chose this?”

”Almost none. Choice is for the strong. These are the ones who weren’t strong enough to stay free.”

They passed a larger enclosure where three elven women sat against the back wall.

One of them had bite marks in various stages of healing across her shoulders and breasts.

Another stared at nothing.

The third looked up when Kane passed and held his gaze for a long moment, not pleading, not seductive, just measuring whether he was another user or something different.

He looked back until she turned her face away.
