Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The keeper was tending its Lawfire when Ren reached the pool. He set his bag on the stone beside his usual place and sat down to wait.

Water trickled over the lip, gathering at the two points before falling. He watched the nearer fall pass the notch he used as a reference. With no working on it, each drop struck the pool almost as soon as it separated.

The keeper turned from its flame.

“You’ve been practicing.”

“Fixed and carried. Changing between them.”

“Show me.”

Ren set the upper edge of his region level with the notch. A drop entered and descended slowly through the short stretch, then quickened as it left. He held the place through the next drop before releasing it.

He waited for another to separate and laid the carried slowing on that water. It continued slowly below the point where his fixed region had ended. The following drop crossed the notch normally; Ren released the first before it could be overtaken.

“Good. Watch this.”

The keeper established its own region at the notch. A drop entered and slowed.

While the water remained inside, the working changed. Ren followed the shift: it had been held to the place beneath the notch, but now it stayed with the selected drop. The water continued slowly past the region’s former lower edge.

The next drop crossed the notch at ordinary speed. Before it caught the first, the keeper released the slowing and let both fall into the pool.

“The same working,” it said. “Change what it follows while the water is still inside.”

“How do I know I’ve done it?”

“Watch below where your region ended. The chosen drop stays slowed. The next one passes through the old place normally.”

It demonstrated again. This time Ren followed the working from the moment the drop entered. The keeper kept the slowing active while changing its attachment from the place to the water within it.

Then it withdrew completely. Two drops fell without slowing before it nodded to Ren.

He restored his region at the notch.

A drop entered. Ren tried to make the change by releasing the place, then reaching for the water. The slowing ended as he let go. Still above the old lower edge, the drop quickened and fell into the pool.

“You released it,” the keeper said.

“I was trying to get it onto the drop.”

“Keep the slowing. Change what it follows.”

‘He’d let go. Of course it had fallen.’

Ren waited for another drop and began again. This time he maintained the slowing while fixing his attention on the water already inside it. He followed that connection as the drop descended, leaving the notch as a reference beside the fall.

In the alternation he had practiced, releasing the region had been the end of one attempt. He had always begun the carried form on fresh water. Here the drop was already slowed, and he had to keep that working through the change. He watched it continue descending while he made the transfer.

The water passed below the former lower edge without quickening. His working remained on it. Behind it, the next drop fell through the old region normally.

He released before the two could meet.

“That,” the keeper said.

On the next attempt, it asked for the change near the top of the region. Ren waited until the drop had entered, then transferred the working. The water continued slowly below the former region.

“Middle.”

He let another descend halfway through the fixed region before making the change.

“Near the bottom.”

That left him less time. He watched the drop approach the lower edge, changed what his working followed and kept the slowing on it below the old limit.

After each attempt, he released before the following drop could overtake the chosen one. Both then fell into the pool, leaving the space beneath the lip clear for his next region.

The keeper turned to tend its flame. Ren continued without the prompts, choosing a different point on each attempt.

Once he waited too long. The drop left the fixed region and quickened before he had transferred the working. He let it fall, released the empty region and reset. On the next attempt he began the change earlier, while the water was still slowed.

He repeated the near-bottom handoff, then chose the middle again. Both held. He could make the change without moving the fixed region down after the water or ending the slowing between the two forms.

The keeper looked up.

“There’s someone filling jars. We can ask if it wants another moment to change them.”

Ren picked up his bag and followed it along the shore.

— ? —

The house stood back from the water, with a channel running down to a stone spout in its yard. A wooden slide shut the flow just behind the short lip. Its lever stood beside a low stone rest, within reach of whoever held a jar beneath the spout.

Four narrow-necked jars waited beside their stoppers. The resident had a small catch cup in one hand.

The keeper spoke to it before bringing Ren to the rest. It looked from him to the spout, then set the first jar beside the cup.

“After I shut it,” it said.

“After the flow stops,” Ren agreed.

The resident raised the lever briefly with the cup beneath the spout, then closed it. Ren watched the tail of the stream drain away. Water remaining on the lip gathered into a drop and fell after the flow had stopped.

The keeper pointed to the wet lip.

“Water gathers there after the gate closes. Give it longer to put the cup under.”

The resident moved the cup aside and put the first jar beneath the spout.

Ren checked the space between the lip and the jar. His fixed region would sit entirely above the rim, clear of the resident’s hands. Below it, the drop would still have a short distance to fall while the vessels were exchanged.

The resident raised the lever. Water ran into the narrow neck until the level stood below the rim, then it closed the slide. The short tail of the stream drained into the jar. A drop began gathering on the lip.

Ren was still checking where to set the region when he noticed the catch cup already waiting in the resident’s other hand.

He established the slowing below the spout. The drop separated, entered the region and began descending slowly.

The resident moved the filled jar onto the side of the rest. Ren changed what the working followed while the drop was still within the fixed region. It continued slowly below the former lower edge as the catch cup slid into place beneath it.

He released. The drop fell into the cup.

The resident put a stopper in the jar, picked it up and carried it inside. Ren watched the spout while it was gone. He had left no working beneath it.

When the resident returned, it moved the cup aside and placed the second jar under the lip.

“Ready?”

Ren nodded.

He had chosen his reference this time, but kept the working off while the water flowed. Only after the slide closed and the stream had drained did he form the region.

The next drop entered. He transferred the slowing as the resident lifted the jar, keeping it on the water while the cup took the jar’s place. As soon as the cup was beneath the fall, he released.

The resident stoppered that jar and carried it in.

On the third exchange, more water gathered on the lip while Ren was slowing the first drop. The resident had already placed the cup beneath the fall. Ren released the chosen drop before the next one separated.

The first landed in the cup. The second followed at ordinary speed, passing through the place his fixed region had occupied. He had no reason to slow it.

The keeper remained beside the rest, watching the spout and the changing vessels. It gave no correction during the final jar. Ren made the transfer before the drop left his region, then released once the cup was ready.

The resident carried the last jar inside.

“Anything left beneath the spout?” the keeper asked.

“No.”

Another drop gathered on the wet lip. They watched it separate and fall directly into the cup.

The keeper turned toward the path.

“Practice that when there’s a use for it. Come back when you want the next thing.”

Ren thanked it and collected his bag. The resident returned for the catch cup as they left the yard.

— ? —

He walked toward the cove, leaving the keeper at the path to its pool. Water lay bright between the shore stones. Farther along, a small stack of flat stones stood above the wet sand; he stepped around it without disturbing the top one.

When he was alone, he asked the System privately for the result.

[TIME: 0.95% → 1.60%.]

Ren dismissed the line and continued along the shore. He went over the first failed transfer, then the last one at the spout. He could now keep the slowing while changing what it followed. Next time he practiced, he would start with the handoff near the lower edge, where he had been late.

The craftsperson was at its bench when he reached the workshop. It looked up, followed his glance toward the far end and moved a tray of tools back into its place.

“Back to the stone?”

“Back to the stone.”

The Ladder stone lay on the kitchen cloth, its chalk marks still dry. Ren set down his bag and took out the sketches he had kept with his notes.

The first showed the connection he had repeated between two marked mouths. The separate page recorded the quarter-turn and the different exit he had seen once. He laid them beside each other, clear of the craftsperson’s tools. 𝐟𝒓ℯⅇ

Then he pulled over the stool and took his place at the bench.
