Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Eira met Ren at the foot of the care-wing stairs.

He had taken the ordinary route to the post, carrying Mei’s reply with the time she had chosen for his visit. Eira put her notebook under her arm and led him upstairs.

”She’s packing,” she said. ”She wants to do it herself.”

Mei’s door was open. She knelt beside the bed with a cloth bag the post had given her, folding a shirt over her knees. When Eira knocked on the frame, she looked up.

”Come in,” she told Ren. ”There’s a chair by the window.”

”Would you like me here?” Eira asked.

”Stay.”

Ren sat while Mei put the shirt into the bag. Eira remained near the door, leaving room for her to pass.

”I’m going home,” Mei said.

She smoothed the folded shirt, then looked at him.

”My family wants me back. They’ll wait for my instructions before setting out. The Alliance offered a meeting point with its people there, and I chose the morning departure. I wrote to my family myself. The desk has sent it.”

She took the travel sheet from beside the bag and showed him the marked departure, then put it with her papers.

”I’ve asked to see Dole again before I leave. She’s coming later. There’s more I can tell her.”

Mei reached for another garment but left it on the bed.

”I’ll decide how much when we talk.”

Ren nodded. She turned to Eira.

”Will you come with me to the meeting point?”

Eira took out her notebook and checked the travel sheet tucked inside it.

”As far as your family?”

”Yes. Just to there.”

”I can do that. Then I’ll go home.” She closed the notebook. ”I’ll have the desk add me to the booking.”

Mei picked up the garment and folded it. Ren waited while she laid it over the shirt, making room beside it for a small pot from the healer.

”There’s something I wanted you to hear from me,” she said. ”About the bowl.”

”Dole told me there was an entry for the spill. The cart was held while they carried the rest through.”

”She told me they found that.” Mei held a cup between her hands. ”I tipped it on purpose.”

Ren waited.

”The guard stood in front of the hatch. I could hear the heavy door open, but I couldn’t see past him. When the cart came with my meal, I lifted the rim nearest me. The soup ran over the tray.”

She showed him with one hand, tilting her palm outward.

”He told them to hold the cart. Then he crouched to wipe the floor, and I could see beside his shoulder. Part of the doorframe, the floor beyond it. The light was paler there. Two shadows crossed it.”

”Could you see who made them?”

”No. He moved back in front of me. Someone said to leave the cart and carry the rest through.”

Mei lowered her hand to the cup.

”After that, the wheels stopped farther away. People went past with the loads. I heard them come back for more, and the heavy door stayed open until they finished. Then my meal came.”

Ren remembered the worker describing those carrying trips to Dole. Vesper had drawn the passage from his account, giving the officers a route to the guarded side door.

”That worker told us they kept it open through the carrying,” Ren said. ”The observers checked the deliveries from outside. When the officers went in, they looked down the passage and confirmed the door was open.”

Mei watched him.

”That was the delivery we chose.”

She looked down at the cup, turning it until its handle lay against her thumb.

”I knew I’d made something change. I didn’t know what it would be good for.”

Ren let her take her time. She wrapped the cup in the remaining shirt and placed it in the bag. Eira waited until Mei reached for the ties before moving away from the door.

The folded blanket lay at the foot of the bed. Mei picked it up after closing the bag and carried it to Eira.

”This is yours.”

Eira took it in both arms.

”I’ll take it home with me.”

Mei ran a hand along the fold before letting go. Then she returned to the bed and set her bag upright beside her. The table was clear now, and the cup was packed. Through the window, Ren could see an officer crossing the yard with a bundle of papers.

He stood.

”I’ll leave you some time before Dole comes.”

”Thank you for coming,” Mei said.

”I’m glad you asked.”

Eira walked downstairs with him, carrying the blanket to her pack beside the desk.

”I’ll send word when we’ve reached the meeting point,” she said. ”And when I’m on my way home.”

”I’ll look for it.”

She went to arrange her place on the journey. Ren left by the yard gate and took the route back to Dawnspire.

When he returned to Verdance, Tarin brought a Nightfire guide to the cove landing. It carried a knotted measuring cord.

”The tenders want to extend their shaded working space,” Tarin said. ”They asked whether you’d look at the ground.”

Ren remembered the screen beneath the Nightfire’s overhang. He had arranged stone for it and traveled with one of the loads while their workers fitted the courses. The opening below had remained clear for the Lawfires.

”The screen is holding?” he asked.

”Yes,” the guide said. ”We need more room behind it. There is a lower step on the landward side. We could work there if it had cover.”

It stretched the cord between its hands and showed him the marked length.

”Shade, with air moving through,” it added. ”The tenders don’t want another closed corner.”

”Show me.”

Tarin arranged the crossing on Ward. The Nightfire guide led them through the island channels in its Lawfire, then brought them alongside the shelf beneath the overhang.

— • —

The stone screen stood between the Hearth and the low sunlight from the sea. Ren could see the courses the workers had fitted, with water passing through the opening beneath them.

Two tenders were working under the overhang. One carried a shallow tray out of the back corner and waited while the other moved aside. It set the tray near the opening, leaving barely enough room for the second tender to pass.

The guide took him around the landward end. Beyond the existing working space, the rock stepped down onto a broad ledge. Part lay beneath the overhang; the rest was exposed to the sky.

”From here to here.” The guide stretched its cord along the ledge. ”Leave the way down beside this end.”

Ren walked the proposed edge, then returned to the existing shade. Warmth came through the rock beneath his palm. Near a low opening he felt air moving inward; at a gap higher in the stone, a warmer current passed his fingers.

”Does it keep moving when the wind drops?”

”Through these openings, yes. More slowly.” The guide pointed toward the back of the sheltered area. ”Less reaches there. The tenders move their work forward when that corner grows too warm. They want room they can keep using.”

The sea breeze eased while they stood there. Air still brushed Ren’s fingers at the upper gap, weaker now. He waited through the lull, checking the lower opening before returning to the guide.

Ren looked from the low opening to the upper one. Joss had taught him to guide the exchange as the warmth feeding connected passages changed. Here he would have different openings, a different heat supply and wind crossing the seaward face.

He could begin with what he had learned. He would need to observe this shelter before deciding how the new passages should join it.

”The water opening stays,” the guide said.

”We’ll leave it clear.”

The new cover would need supports on the lower ledge. Openings through them could admit air, but their position would also matter for shade. Ren crouched to look toward the sky from the proposed working floor, then stood and indicated a patch of unused rock.

”Can I try a small section there first?”

The guide checked the space between it and the tenders’ path.

”There is room.”

— • —

Ren shaped a waist-high section of stone with two offset openings, one lower than the other. Broad feet rested on the bare rock. A narrow connection separated the openings beneath the top of the span.

He marked their widths, then brought a loose block from nearby and lowered it onto the top, keeping most of its weight in his hands at first.

As he transferred the load, pressure gathered in the narrow connection. The outer sections were taking too little. He felt the upper opening begin to pinch and lifted the block clear before releasing any more weight.

The stone remained standing. One edge of the upper opening had moved inward from his mark.

He examined the connection before reshaping it. At Kilnreach, Lenna had eased the pressure on one part of the bedstone while another took more. Through the graft, he had followed those changing paths around its open recesses. His workshop footing had used them on a smaller load.

Here he had formed the openings, but he had not established how the stone above them would carry this placement of the block. Too much had reached the narrow middle before the thicker ends took their share.

Ren restored the opening and worked through the connections while the span was unloaded. He set the block down again, gradually directing pressure outward through the solid sections and down into the broad feet.

The central connection still carried part of the load. This time it held without pressing into the opening.

He waited, then eased his working away. Both width marks remained aligned.

For the next placement he moved the block toward one end. The load reached that side first; he adjusted the distribution before lowering the remaining weight. Once it had settled, he withdrew his working and checked both openings again.

The guide came closer after he stepped back. It passed a hand through each opening, then examined the marks beside them.

”These stayed open.”

”I’ll move the block to the other side next,” Ren said.

”And the air?”

”I want readings at the back and at the openings when the wind changes. Then we can see what the new cover needs.”

The guide looked toward the upper gap in the existing shelter.

”We can show you where it changes.”

”Have the tenders show me before we set the cover.”

They marked the proposed extension before Ren left: the edge of the lower ledge, the space for the supports and the route the tenders needed to keep clear. The guide measured the span again while Ren sketched the existing openings and their heights.

He left the trial section on the unused rock with the block beside it, ready for the next load placement.

”Will you take the work?” the guide asked, resting a hand on the marked edge.

”Yes,” Ren said. ”Tell the tenders I’ll work with them.”

The guide tied the last measurement into its cord and gathered it up to take back beneath the shelf.
