Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The steps opened into a gallery running along the terrace. Air passed Ren from the stair and moved toward a square opening high in the far wall. The lamps in their brackets leaned toward it.

”The gallery flue,” Maren said when he looked up. ”It joins the exhaust above the top terrace. Keep the way to it clear.”

Along the uphill wall, cultivated stone surrounded openings of different sizes. Warm air issued from narrow passages near the floor. Larger recesses held soil and roots that ran toward the beds above. A covered channel followed the wall’s base, with a red chalk line beside it and further marks where branches turned into the stone.

A man crouched at one of those junctions, watching a stone slide set into the channel cover. He made a small adjustment, waited, then checked the nearest passage before standing.

”Tobin Ashe,” Maren said. ”He maintains the heat route.”

Farther along, a woman worked a long probe into an exposed patch of soil beneath the settled terrace. A strip of cloth marked the depth. She withdrew the rod, compared it with an entry on her slate and tried again beside the first hole.

”Lenna Coll. She’ll direct the support work.”

Lenna nodded without putting down the rod. Maren showed Vesper the place by the stair where she could relay calls, then went back to the growers above.

Tobin pointed to the chalk beside the channel.

”Red marks the route and its fittings. Keep your supports outside it. If you need something moved here, ask me.”

Ren followed the line to a marked branch rising into the wall. He turned his guarded shoulder away from it, leaving room between the channel and the harness straps.

Tobin returned to the slide.

”Heat comes up from the lower ground. We admit it to the branches through these gates. Each bed has its own setting.”

”Even in this heat?”

”The roots need a steady temperature. The street doesn’t stay at one, and neither does the ground beneath it.” He indicated the branch above him. ”This feeds the settled section. I’m reducing it before Lenna opens the inspection face.”

He moved the slide partway across. The warmth issuing from the nearest passage changed little at first. Ren held his hand in the current from the gallery side, keeping clear of the stone. Gradually, the air cooled.

”The lining’s Fire working controls the release,” Tobin said. ”It keeps supplying the branch while the feed changes. We lower the setting with it, or the stone continues releasing what it already holds.”

He laid his hand on the slide’s projecting grip. Ren felt the Fire working reach beyond it into the cultivated lining. The current eased further, then steadied while Tobin checked the other passages along the branch.

Ren had controlled Fire along his own arm and followed unfamiliar expressions through the Burning Sea’s embers. Here he could feel Tobin adjusting something established within the material. He could follow the change, but not how the lining maintained it after Tobin withdrew his hand.

He asked the System privately about the exposed edge beneath the cover.

[MATERIAL: CULTIVATED KILNSTONE.]

[LAW CONTENT: FIRE — DEEP. EARTH — PRESENT.]

”Will you shut it off?” he asked Tobin.

”Not unless we have to. The sound beds still need their supply. This setting lets us work beside the branch once the remaining heat has eased.”

He checked the outlet again, then sent Ren to Lenna.

As Ren moved away, Tobin compared the branch’s other outlets. One still gave a stronger current, and he returned to its control rather than lowering the whole row again. Ren watched him leave the neighboring settings alone. The garden’s supply depended on those separate adjustments; closing the main feed would affect beds well beyond the damaged section.

She had finished probing beneath the tilted bed.

”The footing has settled into weaker ground,” she said. ”Before they move the bed, I want support beneath it. Lifting could disturb what’s still holding here.”

Ren examined the exposed stone around the footing. At the pier, he had raised a collar beneath the damaged base and extended it along the sides. He indicated a similar line from the gallery floor to the underside of this section.

Lenna brought her lamp closer.

”Across here?”

”That was where I meant to bring it up.”

Three air passages opened within the space he had indicated. Two recesses carried roots through the wall. Lenna moved the light until he could see the smaller opening behind the second root mass.

”The collar would cover these. The stone would hold, but we’d lose the passages serving the beds above it.”

Ren traced a narrower line between the openings.

”Separate supports. If the floor will carry them.”

”I’ve checked the foundation along here. Let me mark the positions.”

She compared the floor with her drawing, tested the accessible joints with the rod and marked four places clear of the route. Ren checked each before raising stone beneath the footing. The pillars widened at their tops, meeting the settled structure without pushing it upward. Straightening it now could disturb the adjoining beds.

He kept the working steady while Lenna inspected the contact points. At the second pillar, she rested her palm against the cultivated wall and directed his hand to a place beside it.

”Keep your support as it is. Feel where this meets it.”

Her Earth working passed through the grown stone. Ren felt pressure shift above his pillar, carried along the solid sections around the root recesses. Lenna eased the load on one narrow connection, and another section took more. The openings retained their shape.

”We tend this as the beds grow,” she said. ”The roots change, and so does the weight above them. Your pillars will support the footing while we work. Changing how the bedstone carries it takes practice with the material.”

Ren followed the pressure back toward the recess, then lost its course within the wall. He could support the structure from outside without yet reproducing what she was doing inside it.

He checked the material privately.

[MATERIAL: CULTIVATED BEDSTONE.]

[LAW CONTENT: EARTH — DEEP.]

Lenna withdrew her working. At her direction, Ren released his pillars one at a time. The stone remained in place, bearing the load without his continued attention. They checked the footing again before she approved the lift.

He left space around each pillar for Lenna to inspect its base. The roots remained clear, and air still passed through the openings behind the supports. She checked those too, holding her lamp beside the smallest one before comparing the footing with her earlier marks.

”I’ll watch it from here,” she said. ”Go up and help them move the bed.”

Vesper waited by the stair with her notebook open. She could hear calls from the gallery; a garden hand stood ready to carry messages beyond the terrace wall.

”The supports are holding,” Ren told her. ”Lenna’s checking below during the lift.”

Vesper called the report up the steps, then followed him to the entrance where she could relay between both groups.

Maren had kept the carrying path clear. Beside the tilted bed, Eira and Ilse knelt with a grower named Nel, who had exposed its lifting points. The bed rested in a shallow tray of cultivated stone, with a pair of recesses beneath each long side.

Nel showed Eira all four before pointing to a root that connected the bed to neighboring growth. Loose blue cord lay beside it and several others along the margin.

”Blue marks roots to leave alone until we’ve checked them,” she said. ”This connection has to come free before you lift. I’ll cut and dress it.”

Eira held the loose growth back while Nel worked. Once both cut ends were treated, Ilse checked the remaining edge with her. Nothing else joined the tray to the adjoining bed.

At its uphill end, Maren worked a worn wooden marker out of the soil. Ren could make out part of a name cut into it. She brushed the dirt off and slipped it into her coat before stepping clear.

Sol brought Corin and Dray forward with the frame. Ren took the long side while they aligned the tines with the recesses Nel had uncovered.

”Slide in. No lift yet,” Sol said.

They fed the tines beneath the tray until Nel’s marks lined up with their ends. Eira checked the near side and Ilse the far one. Below them, Lenna called that the footing remained steady; Vesper passed it on.

Ren took most of the weight while Corin and Dray kept the frame aligned. They raised the tray a hand’s width and stopped at Sol’s call. The drooping stems along its lower edge came clear without pulling anything from the soil.

They waited there while Vesper called down to Lenna. Ren kept the frame still, watching the gap beneath the tray. It remained open along the whole edge. When Lenna’s answer came back, Sol had Nel check the cut connection once more before he called for them to move.

”Free here,” Eira said.

Ilse checked her side before agreeing. Sol led them uphill along the cleared path, leaving enough room for the frame to turn. The weight was easy for Ren to carry. He moved at the others’ pace, keeping the tray level while they guided its ends.

The growers had placed receiving blocks on checked ground beyond the settled section. Nel directed the lowering so each block met a sound bearing point beneath the tray. Once its weight was seated, Corin and Dray drew out the tines.

Maren took the marker from her coat and pressed it into the soil at the bed’s head. She straightened it with two fingers, then went to look at the exposed space they had left.

Vesper brought Lenna’s report: the footing had held throughout. Ren left the frame with Sol’s crew and returned below.

Tobin had checked the branch again. Its output had reached the reduced setting and remained steady. He pointed out the limit beyond which nobody was to excavate without him inspecting first.

Lenna marked an inspection face between two pillars, beneath the space the bed had occupied. The adjacent beds still loaded the structure around it. Blue cord identified the roots to preserve; the visible route markings lay beyond the work area.

”Hold this section while I clear the loose material,” she told Ren. ”We work from the sides.”

He stood beside a pillar and extended Earth through the supported stone above the face. Lenna waited until he had taken the remaining load before setting a tray underneath and bringing her short tool to the edge.

The first material came away as loose soil. She removed it in small amounts, checking each exposed surface before continuing. Ren followed the changes through his working, keeping pressure away from the roots she had marked.

Farther in, her tool met dry fibers. A thin piece broke away, revealing a root layer shrunken from the stone around it. Lenna held the lamp to the gap. The bedstone above remained supported, but there was little left beneath that part of it.

”We’ve lost support here,” she said.

She worked sideways along the exposed mat. Ren held the surrounding stone while she tested a darker patch with the end of her tool.

The pocket broke inward.

Lenna stepped back as brittle roots and soil fell into the tray. Ren felt the load change above the opening and held it until the movement stopped. The pillars stayed seated. He checked their contact with the footing before telling her it was steady.

”Leave the rest,” she said. ”Tobin, bring the light.”

He held his lamp beside the opening. Beyond the cleared pocket, a cavity extended uphill into darkness. Part of a lined branch was exposed along its side, higher than the main channel beside the gallery floor.

Tobin pointed without reaching through.

”That’s the branch serving this row.”

A split ran across the visible lining. Stone beside it was discolored, and the root layer had drawn away from that surface. The lamplight reached only part of the damaged area.

”Heat escaping there could dry this layer,” Tobin said. ”It shrinks, support is lost, and the bed settles.”

Lenna studied where the roots had separated from the stone.

”Or movement opened the lining first. We haven’t exposed either end of the split.”

”No.”

Ren could see the breach and the failed root layer, but nothing that settled their order. Maren’s account began with the changes above ground. Whatever had happened before the terrace sank remained beyond the opening they had made.

Tobin drew his lamp back. Its flame leaned toward the cavity.

Ren looked along the gallery. The nearest bracket lamps had turned the same way, while those farther down still leaned toward the flue. Air passed his sleeve and entered the opening beside his working.

”The draw’s changed,” he said.

Tobin set the lamp on a clear ledge and went to the flue control. Ren had seen him check its stone slide before they began. Now he opened it farther, watching the bracket flames as he moved it toward its stop.

The nearest flame straightened briefly, then bent toward the cavity again. Tobin left the slide at the open mark and returned along the channel.

”The cavity is taking the draw,” he said. ”It may join the exhaust farther back. The gallery control isn’t correcting it.”

He looked at the face, then at Lenna.

”No more clearing until the draft keeper checks it.”

She put her tool aside. Ren maintained the support, keeping the opening at the size they had exposed. Nothing else had shifted, but he could feel the current strengthening against his sleeve.

Tobin stopped beside him.

”Can you keep this held?”

”Yes.”

”Lenna stays with you. I’ll get someone down here.”

He went to the foot of the stair and called to Vesper.

”Fetch the draft keeper.”
