Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Tamsin’s letter began with the two slower mats.

There’s new growth along the margins of both. Their runners have reached the neighboring supports, and Hadde checked underneath this morning. The new roots are holding. You asked me to write when they settled.

Ren read that part twice before continuing.

The cooperative had replaced the nursery gate, using a crew hired after the recovery. The removed sections had been inspected. Damaged fittings and worn seating edges made them unsuitable for reuse, but much of the cultivated stone remained sound beneath the broken surfaces.

Tamsin listed five sections: three carrying passages through the gate structure and two from its seats. Each had a condition entry beside it. The cooperative had released them for salvage and was offering them to Ren.

If you want these, confirm the collection and freight arrangements. We’ll have them ready for the barge.

He replied that evening, thanking her for the news about the mats and asking her to pass his thanks to Hadde. The hollow block remained intact at home, where he was practicing the exchange she had taught him. He accepted the five sections and arranged their transport.

The barge took them to Ebbmere’s harbor gate as declared freight against Tamsin’s list. After the crossing, handlers unloaded them in the private receiving bay Ren had booked on Dawnspire. He checked the tags and exposed faces before signing for them. Once the handlers had left, he transferred the stone into Verdance alone.

The old fittings had been removed. He laid the five pieces beside the Worldroot with their cultivated faces accessible, then left them there until after his first booking at the practice hall.

The attendant set up the rated resistance frame and brought out Ren’s earlier sheet. The beam ran between its guides, with the same grips and padded shoulder support beneath it.

”Same movement?”

”Same grip. Body only. I need a fresh comparison.”

Ren warmed up through the lower settings before the attendant began recording. Earth remained out of the movement; nothing beneath his feet helped him drive the beam upward.

At the first recorded setting, he completed the stroke with the level indicator centered. He lowered the beam onto its rests and waited while the attendant adjusted the resistance.

The next setting rose most of the way, but his right side lagged before he reached the top. He stopped and lowered it under control.

”Incomplete,” the attendant said, entering the tilt beside the setting.

Ren checked the sheet. Both results belonged to this visit, with his current grip positions and the frame’s settings recorded alongside them.

”Use those again when I come back.”

The attendant put the sheet aside for the second booking. Ren collected his coat and returned home.

He began with one of the passage sections.

Death opened the graft site in a thin gray line. Ren brought the cultivated face against it, and Life spread through the join, binding the stone’s layers into the Worldroot.

The familiar chamber pattern emerged as the material joined. Water entered through a narrow mouth, divided through connected spaces and reached the inner passages at different times. He could follow it without the effort it had taken after Ebbmere. He had worked with that relationship beneath the landing and in the reservoir test at the cove.

Ren waited for the first join to settle before bringing up the next section. Its passages extended the same arrangement. The third held another variation he could already recognize, with no new principle in the Water working that guided the flow.

He kept his hand at each site until the join closed. The material still strengthened his foundation as it was absorbed.

The seating sections had different passages.

At the broken face of the first, curves turned away from the worn seating edge and continued deeper into the stone. Ren traced one with his finger before setting the section against the next graft site.

Once Life took hold, he could follow the cultivated working within it. As the gate approached its seat, the opening narrowed. Water that had passed through the wider gap was directed into the curving passages before pressure concentrated against the closing edge.

The working changed with the opening. It turned more of the flow aside as the gap diminished, carrying that water onward through the structure. The gate still bore a load, but the flow did not wedge it against the seat in the same manner as an uncontrolled current.

Ren stayed with the changing relationship. The chambers he knew spread the arrival of a surge. Here the working adjusted to a passage that was closing, guiding the water into another route while the available space changed.

He lost the sequence where two internal passages joined and went back through it. On the next pass, he followed the shift in flow beyond that junction to the outlet. The pressure had moved with the water; it had not disappeared at the seating edge.

The second seating section carried the corresponding arrangement from the other side. Much of it was familiar after the first, but it let him follow the closing gap through the paired faces. He remained at the trunk until the final exposed edge was absorbed.

A narrow ridge of bark settled beneath his palm.

”It’s closing there, Ren,” Kaia said privately.

He kept his hand still until the join had sealed, then looked down at the grass. All five pieces were gone. Only the tags and collection papers remained beside the root.

Alone at the trunk, he asked the System for the result.

[GRAFT COMPLETE.]

[FOUNDATION: 53.4 → 58.2 MILLION TONS.]

[WATER: 12.5% → 12.9%.]

Ren sat beside the graft sites and went through the seating working again. He could understand more of it now, but he had yet to guide water through a closing passage himself. He added that exercise to his notes before putting the freight papers away.

At the second hall booking, the attendant restored the recorded grip positions and settings.

Ren warmed up, then repeated the clean baseline lift. The beam rose more easily, with both ends level. He lowered it to the rests and stepped out while the attendant prepared the setting he had failed to complete.

After the same rest interval, he took his place again.

The resistance built through his shoulders. Near the top of the stroke, where his right side had lagged before, he kept the beam level and finished the lift. He held it long enough for the attendant to check the indicator, then brought it down smoothly.

”Clean,” the man said.

He entered the result beneath the earlier attempt and passed Ren the sheet. Ren compared the two rows, folded the paper and thanked him before leaving.

The craftsperson asked him to look at its workbench on his next visit to the cove.

One timber foot had settled into the ground beside a drainage run. The other three rested on firm stone. Under heavier work, that corner sank farther and the bench began to rock.

”I’ve packed beneath it twice,” the craftsperson said. ”It settles again when I start hammering.”

Ren crouched beside the foot. Water moved through the narrow drain beneath the affected corner and continued toward the shore.

”We’ll need the weight off this end.”

The craftsperson cleared the bench while Ren brought temporary supports onto the firm ground beside it. He lifted the end enough for the supports to take its weight, then checked that it stood without his hands beneath it.

With the foot clear, he opened the ground around the settled patch. Loose packing lay above the drain. Farther out, firm ground offered a bearing surface on either side and below the channel.

He had supported open spaces at Kilnreach, then followed the bedstone’s deeper pressure paths through the graft at home. This footing would be much smaller. He laid out where the bench’s weight would enter it and where that load could reach sound ground without closing the drain.

Earth formed a broad plate beneath the foot. From it, Ren shaped ribs down to the checked bearing points, leaving the channel clear between them. As he settled the structure, he worked the pressure through those connections, easing it away from the unsupported center and distributing it across the firmer ground.

He lowered the bench onto the plate a little at a time. The load reached one side more heavily at first. Ren adjusted that rib’s bearing surface, then lowered the remaining weight and followed it through both sides of the footing.

When he withdrew his working, the stone held. He removed the temporary supports and checked the channel beneath the new plate. Water still passed through to the outlet.

The craftsperson returned the usual working load to that end of the bench. It began with several light strikes on a blank, then worked up to the hammering that had caused the corner to settle.

Ren watched the foot against a mark on the plate. It stayed in place. The craftsperson stopped, pressed down on the bench’s edge and checked for rocking before crouching beside him.

”Still level.”

”And the water’s getting through.”

It looked along the drain, then returned to the bench. The second spear head lay shaped on a cloth beside the first, whose worn point had been dressed. The joint components were laid out separately.

”These need fitting and checking,” it said. ”I’ll send word when they’re ready for the range.”

”I’ve been using the blank.”

”Show me when you bring it back. We’ll check your grip before the next powered throw.”

Ren left it working at the steadied bench and went along the shore toward the Stillfire keeper’s pool.

The keeper had agreed to another lesson and asked him to come when its work allowed. It sat beside its flame as Ren approached, with water gathering at the two points on the stone lip above the pool.

It indicated his earlier place on the rock.

”Show me what you’ve practiced.”

Ren aligned the upper edge of his slowing region with the notch beside one fall. A drop entered, slowed through the short stretch and quickened as it left. He held the working in place while another gathered above it.

Six drops passed through before he released the region. Its upper edge had stayed at the notch throughout. Beside them, water from the other point fell normally into the pool.

”Steadier,” the keeper said.

”I stopped following each drop down.”

The keeper nodded and raised a hand toward the lip.

”Now choose what the working follows.”

It waited for a drop to separate, then laid the slowing on that drop. Ren followed the Time working as the water descended past the notch and continued slowly below the place where his fixed region had ended.

The next drop passed the notch at its ordinary speed while the chosen one remained slowed farther down. Before the following drop could catch it, the keeper released the working. Both fell into the pool.

”You kept it on the first drop,” Ren said.

”Yes. The place stayed where you set it. This stays with the water I chose.”

It demonstrated again, letting him follow how the working held to the selected drop through its fall. Ren watched its relation to the water as well as the point where each slowing began.

On his first attempt, he formed the familiar region and moved it downward after the falling drop. The keeper stopped him before it reached the pool.

”You’re carrying the region after it.”

Ren released it. He could feel the difference from the demonstration, though he had fallen back on the movement he knew.

The keeper showed him once more, beginning as a fresh drop parted from the lip. Ren tried to hold the working to the selected water. It caught briefly, then slipped away as the drop descended.

On the next attempt, he maintained that connection. The drop passed the notch still slowed, continuing beneath the lower edge of his old exercise. The following drop crossed the notch normally. Ren released before it could overtake the first.

”Again,” the keeper said.

He lost the connection on the next drop, reset, then made two clean repetitions. Afterward, the keeper had him restore the fixed region. Three drops passed through the same short stretch before he let it go.

The keeper lowered its hand.

”You can choose either now. Practice changing between them.”

It turned to tend its flame while Ren rested beside the pool. He asked the System privately to verify his progress.

[TIME: 0.75% → 0.95%.]

His foundation, Water and Time had advanced. He remained Six, with further Law requirements to meet and the work on Verdance’s sun still ahead. He dismissed the result as the keeper turned back toward the fall.

”Alternate,” it said. ”Fixed first, then carried.”

Ren set the region at the notch. One drop entered and slowed before falling freely below it. He released the region, waited for the next drop to separate from the lip, and laid the new working on that water.
