Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Ren stopped at the inscription shining across the floor just inside the opening.

Three lines had crossed the approaches in the shaft. Each had carried him somewhere his next step would not ordinarily reach. Here, the stone continued beyond the writing to the walls of a room about the size of the Terrace kitchen. He checked the floor and corners before stepping over it.

The inscription brightened as his second foot came down. A panel beside him drew back into the wall, opening a recess at chest height. Something pale rested on the shelf inside.

The System relayed the inscription privately.

[THE REQUIRED SEQUENCE IS COMPLETE.]

[MATERIAL RESERVED FOR THE TRAINING OF THE ADMITTED LINEAGE. COMPLETION RELEASES THIS ALLOTMENT TO THE CLAIMANT.]

[THE RETURN PASSAGE IS OPEN. IT LEADS TO THE ADMISSION LANDING.]

Ren read the first line again. The stair and the bridge had completed the sequence.

’He could stop checking every place he put his feet.’

The rest named no family and no depositor. It told him why the material had been kept and that he had earned it by finishing. He looked toward the recess, then crossed the floor.

The stone was forearm-length, pale gray, with squared edges and smooth faces. Fine channels opened through its surface. Around their mouths, grown layers curved inward and divided into smaller branches. He had seen that kind of growth in the Ebbmere gate sections before grafting them.

The piece rested loose on the bare shelf. Nothing joined it to the wall.

He lifted it out with both hands. It had the weight he would expect from stone that size. After the bridge’s block, he had braced for far more.

Ren turned it over. One channel opened near a corner and curved out of sight. He placed his thumb beside its mouth and sent a little Earth into the worked layers. He could follow the first bend, then lost the line where the grain divided. He withdrew the working instead of pressing farther.

Privately, he asked the System to identify it.

[WORKED CULTIVATED STONE.]

[LAW CONTENT: EARTH. SPACE.]

He held the piece closer to the light and looked into the channel again.

The two Laws were in the material. That was useful to know before he did anything with it. How much of its working he could follow, and whether to study it intact or graft it, would take more than a look into one opening.

He could do that at home, with the piece laid out on a bench. There was no reason to start taking it apart here.

Ren set down his pack and opened it. The remaining bread was still wrapped above the dried food. He lifted both out, laid the stone flat in the bottom, then fitted the food beside it. The loaf went back on top, clear of the stone’s edges.

He checked that the water was secure before fastening the flap. The new weight sat low against his back when he shouldered the pack.

A passage stood open in the far wall. Beyond it, a short flight of cut steps rose toward a brighter opening. The inscription’s last line had named that route: the admission landing.

Ren adjusted the straps and went to it. Behind him, the shelf was empty. He had taken what the trial had released to him, and there was nothing else he needed to do before leaving.

The steps ended on the upper landing where he had accepted the terms.

The ring was still lit around its edge. Ren moved clear of the opening and turned as the stone closed behind him. The seam vanished. One by one, the marks around the landing went dark.

He stood there with the pack on his back, looking at the wall.

The dawn band lit one face of the spire gold. Open air lay beyond the rail, with the lower stairs winding around the rock beneath him. He could hear footsteps from another stretch of the climb.

Ren went down.

He passed the inspection square without raising his hand to the carving. It stayed dark. Farther down, an open span carried him above the public platforms. A climber stood at the fourth platform’s basin, hands on its rim, tending the separate flames suspended over the floor marks.

Ren watched one flame draw inward before the climber restored it. Then the stair curved behind the rock and took the platform out of sight.

His shoulders still ached, though the pack was easy to carry. He shifted a strap away from the harness fastening and continued to the entrance.

A short queue stood beneath the public board, plates in hand. The attendant finished checking one before looking up at him. Her eyes moved from his face to the reference on her slate.

”You’re back.”

”Yes.”

She entered the return beside his admission and turned the slate toward him. Both entries sat under the same reference. Ren checked it and nodded.

”I completed it.”

”I’ll enter that as your report.” She made another note. ”Your return is recorded.”

She brought his Gold Surveyor plate from beneath the counter and set it between them. Ren picked it up and put it inside his coat. The attendant closed the entry, then looked up when he remained at the desk.

”The names I left,” he said. ”Can you send them a message? Tell them I’m back and heading for the Terrace.”

”I can send that.”

She checked the contacts on the entry, wrote the short notice and sent it. Ren waited until she confirmed it had gone, then thanked her and stepped away from the counter.

On the path to the transfer ring, Kaia spoke privately.

”You’re back, Ren.”

He slowed for a moment. It was the first he had heard from her since the lower ledge in Verdance, before the trial. He smiled and went on.

The ring returned him to the Guild’s mission hall. He passed the contract queues with the pack settled against his back and headed for the Terrace.

Iris and Lyra were near the top of the steps when he arrived.

Lyra saw him first and came down to meet him. Iris followed with his slate in her hand. She held it out when he reached her.

”The next message is yours.”

Ren took it, looked at her, then set it on the step beside his boot.

He reached for her instead.

Iris stepped into his arms and pressed her face against his collar. Her hands settled against his back, one above the pack and the other beneath it. He held her while Lyra’s palm rested between his shoulders.

When Iris drew back, Lyra caught his pack as he slipped his arms out of the straps. She lowered it onto the step and put both arms around him.

Ren held her close. She kept her face against his coat while he rested his cheek against her hair.

”You finished?” she asked against his coat.

”I finished.”

She moved her hand over his shoulder. ”Does that hurt?”

”Sore. I carried something heavy.”

”How heavy?”

”More than it looked.”

Lyra leaned back and glanced at the pack.

”The bridge’s block,” he said. ”Not what’s in there.”

”Come up and sit down,” Iris said. She picked up the slate while Lyra took the pack again.

The teapot stood on the table with three cups. Two had already been used; Iris filled the third and put it in front of Ren. Lyra set the pack on the bench beside him before taking her seat.

He drank. The cup was warm against his palms, and he kept both hands around it after lowering it to the table.

”Were you hurt anywhere else?” Iris asked.

”No. Just the shoulders. They’ll settle.”

She looked at him a moment, then put his slate beside the cup.

”There are messages. None needs answering before you’ve rested.”

”Thanks.”

He left the slate where she had put it. Lyra sat close enough that her knee touched his beneath the table. Ren finished half the tea before reaching for the pack.

”What did you bring back?” Iris asked.

He opened the flap and lifted the wrapped bread out first, setting it on the bench. The stone lay flat in the bottom beside the dried food.

Ren took it out with both hands and set it between their cups.

”The trial gave me this.”

Lyra leaned closer. A fine branching channel opened near her side of the table. She ran a finger beside its mouth, following the layers where they curved into the opening.

”It’s grown.”

”Like the gate stone from Ebbmere,” Ren said.

Iris turned the piece a little toward the light. Another channel opened on that face, narrower than the first. She bent to look into it, then let the stone rest flat again.

”What will you do with it?”

”I’ll have a proper look at home. I only checked a little of it inside.”

Lyra traced the edge of the opening once more and took her hand away. Ren put the bread back in his pack and left it on the bench.

Then he picked up his tea.

Lyra moved the teapot and her cup aside, making room for the stone.
