Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Lyra knocked on Ren’s door.

”Breakfast is out. Iris says if you don’t get up, she’s eating your share.”

He was already awake, watching the light move across the ceiling. Inside the trial, it had stayed the same wherever he stopped.

He dressed and joined them on the Terrace, taking his seat between them. The stone was still on the table where Lyra had made room for it, pale gray beside the teapot. Iris hadn’t eaten his share, but she had put his slate beside his plate.

”Two short messages and a letter.”

Dole’s office had no further questions requiring his attendance. They would contact him if that changed. Enna’s eastbound survey had gone ahead; she would request him again when suitable work came up. He told the Carrow post he was available while his tea cooled.

The letter had come through Halvern, folded small enough to sit beneath his cup.

How did the bread come out? You said you’d help and let it cool. Did Lyra get the water right? Did you? Your father wants the next letter as long as the last one. He read it twice, so you’ve only yourself to blame.

I liked hearing about the flowers. I’d like to see what they’ve become. Write when you’re back.

Ren read the line about the flowers again.

’Dad was going to expect a proper letter every time now.’

”She wants to know if you got the water right,” he told Lyra.

”I did.”

”She asks about me, too.”

”You thought it was wrong before you’d finished kneading.”

”It was stuck to my hands.”

”And your wrist,” Iris said.

Lyra took a piece of bread from the board. ”Tell her it came out. And that you waited before cutting it.”

”I’ll write after breakfast.”

He finished his tea, then wrote about the loaf and told them he was home. Before putting the slate away, he sent Maren a request for Dalia’s Light lesson. At Kilnreach, she had spread the light reaching a marked board across the shaded squares beside it. The leaves at that height received it too. He had recognized the working, then lost it beyond the brightest patch.

He asked for her availability and left the transport booking until he had an answer. Dalia had a canopy repair to finish; he would fit the visit around her work.

Iris left for work. Lyra kissed him before heading downstairs. Ren wrapped the stone in a kitchen cloth and carried it to his room.

He brought it through into Verdance, then followed the path to the Worldroot.

Eira sat on the flat stone at the pocket, two drawings beside her knee. Wick lit the water, and Loom kept it moving through the shallows. The princess rested by her root with Cradle’s fringe along one side. Beyond the barrier, the slabs sheltered the strip where Cradle kept its young.

”You’re back,” Eira said, finishing a line.

”Finished it.”

”Sit. Look at this.”

He set the wrapped stone beside him. Eira laid the pages edge to edge. They showed the princess from the same angle, first reaching toward Wick, then turning with her arm extended. Her shoulder kept its outline in both. Eira held down one corner against the breeze while he compared them, then looked back at the water to finish the fingers on the newer drawing.

”She’s holding that through the movements I’ve watched. Reaching, turning, resting.”

”And the young?”

”Covered. I checked before you came.”

The Tide tender stood farther along the bank with a hand in the water. Eira pointed out where it was checking.

”Same warmth there and near the root. It checks between my visits.”

Cradle lifted its fringe and moved along the bank toward the slabs. Ren watched it pass beneath them and settle beside its brood. There was room between the supports for its fringe to spread over the covered young. The princess remained at the root for a while, one hand against the bark.

Then she released it and moved through the shallow water toward the bank.

She passed the submerged branches and stopped where the ground shelved upward, still in water to her waist. Eira paused with her pencil above the page.

The princess looked up.

Flowers from Elena’s seeds grew thick around the Worldroot. The breeze moved through their stems, bending some toward the water before they rose again. She raised a hand toward them. Her fingers spread, gold-edged and clear, but she stayed where she was.

Ren followed her gaze. Light came through the petals of a flower hanging above the bank. He watched it turn on its stem. ℴℴ𝗺

When he looked back, she was returning across the pocket. Cradle had emerged from beneath the slabs and was settling by the root. She came alongside it and put her hand against its fringe.

”I haven’t seen her look up there before,” Eira said.

She drew the princess’s position beside the earlier views and added a note beneath it. Ren stayed seated while she finished. The princess lowered her hand onto Cradle’s shell, and its fringe settled around her as Loom’s flow continued through the rest of the pocket.

”I’m ready to go out,” Eira said, closing the book. ”I’ve finished my checks. I’ll speak to the tender before we go.”

She packed her kit and secured the folded blanket over it. Ren picked up the stone and walked with her after she had spoken to the tender. At the place where he had entered, he opened the way out for her.

Eira stepped through with her bag over one shoulder. Ren closed the passage behind her and returned to the Worldroot.

He sat against the trunk, the bundle beside his knee.

”Stay a little, Ren,” Kaia said privately.

He stayed until he heard Cradle moving through the water again.

Tarin was at the cove landing, with Ward in the deep water beside it.

”The crossings ran,” Tarin said. ”The guide came over on the last one. Both bays were in use when it left.”

”Good. Were they still using the strips?”

”It said they were.”

Ren left Tarin to the next load and carried the stone up to the workshop.

The craftsperson cleared a place on the bench and unwrapped it. It turned the piece under the light, following the layers into the accessible openings, then ran a thumbnail along one smooth face.

”Grown inside. Worked on the faces.”

”Can you tell who worked it?”

”No. They finished these edges well.” It tilted the piece again. ”That doesn’t give me a name or an age.”

”The trial gave it to me at the end.”

”What do you want to do with it?”

Ren looked at the mouth near one corner. Inside the trial, he had followed the surrounding layers with Earth until the grain divided and he lost them. The grafted gate stone had given him workings to study, but he had barely examined this piece intact.

”Start with the channels.”

The craftsperson moved its tools farther down the bench. Ren fetched a cup of water and a shallow tray, then set the stone in the tray with the chosen opening uppermost.

He poured a little into it. Nothing emerged from the mouths on that face. As he tilted the piece toward the opposite side, water dribbled from an opening low on the far face.

”There,” he said.

The craftsperson watched the last drops fall into the tray. Ren let it drain in that position, dried the outer faces, and marked the two mouths with chalk. A small wooden wedge held the tilt while he drew setting lines beside the stone.

He returned it to the starting position and poured again. When he lowered it onto the wedge, water emerged from the same opening.

”Those two connect,” the craftsperson said.

Ren marked them on a sketch. He could not yet follow the passage between them. The water had shown where it came out; it gave him no measure of the route inside.

He let the stone drain again before turning it a quarter-turn for the next pour. Water came from another mouth. He marked that one separately and recorded the changed position, leaving space for another test.

He set the cup down. The first two pours gave him a connection he could check again in the same position. He left the third observation on a separate sketch until he could repeat it.

”Can I leave it here?”

”It can have the end.” ℯℓ.

Ren drained the piece over the tray before moving it. He checked the chalk marks against his sketch, then put the page with his notes and folded the kitchen cloth beneath the dry side of the stone.

”Keep the chalk dry,” it said.

Ren emptied the cup and tray and returned them to the shelf.

Maren’s reply was waiting when he returned to Dawnspire.

Dalia can see you tomorrow, before her next inspection. Meet her at the keepers’ entrance on the shaded side. I’ve included the arrival window and the port’s protective-clothing requirements.

Ren checked the connection to Kilnreach against the window. One departure left time for the port and the journey to the garden. He checked the return service as well, then booked and sent Maren his arrival details.

The stone would remain on the bench while he was away. He opened his notes from Dalia’s demonstration: the bright square, the shaded squares beside it, the leaves at the same height.

He added the meeting place beneath them.

Then he fetched his coat. The strap Iris had tucked through its loop was still secure. He checked the rest of his travel kit against the port’s requirements and set it beside the door.
