Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Iris had the painted float again. She had won their rematch at the lower market and put it away before Ren could suggest another round.

When he returned to the cove the next morning, the craftsperson was sorting the two frames he had set aside from Ebbmere. Sound timbers lay beside split ones, and the recovered fittings filled a shallow tray.

Ren stopped beside the new landing and unrolled his sketch.

”I have another job, if you want it.”

The Glassfire set down a fitting. ”Show me.”

He described a carrier for living loads on Wake’s back: support beneath the whole mat, spaces for a lifting frame’s tines, and a width that could change for different beds. It needed ties for coverings, drainage, and enough clearance to reach Keep’s cradle without unloading everything beside it.

The craftsperson turned the sketch around and moved one of his lines.

”The cradle needs more room here. You have to get your hands under it.”

Ren watched it mark the new edge.

”Can you use these?” He indicated the frames.

”For parts.” It lifted a sound timber and sighted along its length. ”I’ll need more wood for the slats, and Wake here with the cradle fitted. I can start once I’ve finished these repairs.”

Ren brought the requested materials and helped with the measurements. On his later visits, cut timbers replaced the rough lengths beside the landing, and the fittings moved from the tray onto the frame.

The completed carrier had sliding side rails, overlapping slat sections, and cleats for securing a covering. Narrow spaces beneath the supported load let water drain away. At one end, the frame turned around the cradle’s seat, leaving its fastenings accessible.

Ren carried it to the water without difficulty. He slowed only to place it where Vesper directed.

Wake held alongside the landing. Vesper managed the loading side while Eira checked the clearance around Keep. The craftsperson reached beneath the frame as Ren steadied it, adjusting the padded supports before they secured it to the harness.

They checked Keep’s cradle again under the carrier’s weight. It remained dry, with space to lift it clear.

Weighted bundles went aboard first. Strips of cloth lay across the slat joints where roots might rest. Wake held still while Vesper checked the rails against the craftsperson’s measurements.

Nothing shifted under the stationary load.

”Out past the landing, then turn back,” Ren told Wake.

The whale moved into open water with the bundles secured beside Keep. Ren stayed on the bank, leaving it to carry the full load through the turn.

When Wake returned, Vesper checked the cloth strips. Two came free. The third tightened when she pulled it.

”Here.”

One rail had crept through its adjustable joint. The slat gap above it had narrowed around the cloth, though the bundles still sat level.

The craftsperson traced the movement back to the fitting.

”The clamp held the weight. It slipped when the load pulled sideways.”

It had Ren unload the bundles before releasing the caught strip. A crease remained where the wood had gripped it.

Eira took the cloth. ”That would have caught a root under the mat.”

The craftsperson marked the joint and the rail beside it. ”I’ll pin the adjustment once the width is set. Bring it ashore.”

On the next test, pins secured the adjusted rails. White alignment marks showed where the moving sections met the fixed frame.

They used the same bundles and cloth strips. Wake turned in both directions, returning for a check after each. Vesper drew the strips free while Ren watched the marks along the rails.

”They’re all free, Ren,” Kaia said.

The craftsperson checked the pins before they replaced the bundles with a small mat of common cove weed. Eira spread its loose roots across the slats and secured the wet covering. Wake carried it through the same turns.

On its return, Eira lifted the covering and examined the mat’s edges.

”No pinching. The ties stayed clear of the growth.” She reached beneath the nearest slat. ”We can still get under it to lift.”

Small swells rolled Wake gently alongside the landing. The new stone chambers softened the wash against the bank, but the floating carrier still rose and fell relative to the fixed edge.

Ren waited while Vesper brought the lifting frame into position. Then he used Water to guide the next wash along the outer stone, reducing the roll while the tines passed beneath the mat.

Once they were in place, he released the working. The carrier moved with the next swell, and Vesper waited for it to settle before calling the lift. The pinned rails held their alignment throughout.

Ren took the weight and brought the mat ashore. Eira checked the underside before helping him return it to the shallows.

The craftsperson handed Ren a spare locking pin and pointed to a fitted holder on the carrier’s end rail.

”Keep it there. Whoever loads this may need it when you’re somewhere else.”

Ren pushed it into the holder and fastened the retaining loop.

They agreed on the harness while the carrier’s revised joints were being finished.

The craftsperson measured Ren with his arm raised, extended and bent across his body. It watched Heavenpiercer emerge before marking the projection line on his sleeve. The seed-torc remained clear of the proposed chest straps.

”Again. Finish the movement.”

Ren brought his arm through a full cut, then turned and braced. The craftsperson moved a chalk mark behind his shoulder.

The finished pieces were curved worked-glass guards with padded backing. One fitted his forearm; the other covered the shoulder, secured by straps that left his elbow free. The craftsperson tightened the forearm fastening and adjusted the chest strap after his first cross-body reach pulled it taut.

A small amount came off the shoulder guard’s inner edge to clear his raised upper arm. After that, he could repeat the movement without the plate catching his sleeve or pressing toward the torc.

They took it to an empty stretch of coast for testing. Ren raised stone targets with Earth, spacing them so each had clear water behind it. Vesper and the craftsperson watched from outside the striking area.

He began without a working: walking, crouching, turning and reaching. Then he extended Heavenpiercer and brought it through the movements they had measured. The blade cleared the guard throughout.

A controlled Fire working tested heat along the guarded arm. He held it steady, then withdrew it before the craftsperson inspected the backing, straps and glass.

For the impact check, they suspended a weighted beam from a simple frame. The craftsperson marked its release position and swung it against the shoulder guard while Ren braced. It then tested the forearm piece at the same marked load.

The guards remained seated. After he removed them, the craftsperson checked their inner faces and the attachment points before fitting them again.

”That passed,” it said. ”If we test a heavier load, we start with it off you.”

Ren rolled his shoulder once and nodded.

He walked to his mark while the others moved behind the test frame.

With Earth, Ren raised an angled slab between himself and the first target. It stood chest-high, with room to move around either end. He left the ground at its base level and stepped behind it.

From there, the target disappeared behind stone. He moved along the slab, cleared its right edge, and turned onto a new attacking line. The post stood at the near distance he had tested in the hall. Beyond it, the water was empty.

He gathered Stormsever into Close Sever’s narrow release and cut.

Green-gold and grey passed through the post and continued over the sea. His arm completed the movement with no pull from the chest strap. The shoulder guard stayed seated as he lowered it.

Ren returned behind the slab and approached its other end. The second target stood farther to that side; he adjusted his position until its distance and the clear line beyond it matched the exercise.

The second cut went through cleanly.

He repeated the movement once more without releasing the art, turning from cover with his arm ready. Earth had given him somewhere to move behind, and he could emerge on either side without having to work around his own equipment.

Vesper recorded the two successful runs. The craftsperson checked the shoulder fastening where it had pulled during the fitting, then had him raise his arm again.

This time it left the strap where it was.

Ren wore the harness back along the coast. It moved comfortably with him, and he had a clear stretch of shore where he could practice the sequence again.

He visited the Stillfire keeper on the northern shore after the equipment work was finished.

It had crossed with the families before the merge and settled near them by the water. Ren remembered it at the ruined cleft, arms raised while slabs descended slowly above the people passing beneath. He had grafted the released support afterward and followed the slowing preserved in its inscriptions.

Now the keeper sat beside its Lawfire near a small pool. Water trickled over a stone lip above it, gathering at two points before falling.

Ren waited until it turned toward him.

”Would you teach me?” he asked. ”I can follow the slowing. Keeping it where I want it is harder.”

The keeper looked toward the lip, then indicated a place on the rock beside it, clear of its flame.

”Sit here. Show me where you want it.”

He knelt and pointed to the space beneath one of the dripping points.

”That short a stretch?”

”To start.”

The keeper raised a hand.

A drop fell from each point. One struck the pool almost at once. The other slowed just below the lip, continuing downward through a short stretch before falling freely again.

Ren watched another pair. He had seen the boundary at the cleft, where ash left the working and resumed its fall. Here he could observe the beginning and end close together, with an unaffected drop beside them.

”Where does it begin?” the keeper asked.

Ren held a finger beside the fall without entering it. ”Here.”

”And below?”

He watched until the next drop passed through. Its descent quickened gradually near the bottom.

”You’re easing it before it leaves.”

The keeper lowered its hand. Both drops fell normally.

”Now yours. Keep the upper edge there.”

— • —

Ren drew on Time with his attention fixed beneath the lip.

The first drop slowed only slightly. On the next attempt, he felt the working follow his attention downward, so the drop remained within it longer than he intended.

He released it and chose a notch in the stone beside the falling water as his reference.

This time he held the upper edge level with the notch. The drop entered, descended slowly through the small region, then fell into the pool. Its companion had already landed.

Ren kept the working in place for the next pair. As the water gathered at the lip, his attention rose toward it. The region shifted with him, and the next drop met the slowing too high.

The keeper pointed to the notch.

”There.”

Ren reset it. Another drop passed cleanly through, but he lost the position while waiting for the one after it.

He let the working go and watched the ordinary fall for a moment.

”I keep following the water.”

”Yes. Choose where the working belongs, then let the water pass through it.”

Ren tried again. He held the region through the first drop and into the wait that followed. The next drop entered near the same point before the lower edge began to drift.

He stopped rather than chase it down toward the pool.

”That held longer,” the keeper said. ”Practice that. Several drops through the same place.”

”Can I come back and show you?”

The keeper nodded toward the lip. ”We’ll use this one again.”

Ren studied the notch he had chosen, then settled his hand beside his knee. Above the pool, water gathered for another drop.
