Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Joss held the lesson on a sound stretch of the gallery, clear of the relief path from the damaged branch. Tobin had checked the teaching section and marked the limits within which he could vary its feed without taking the beds outside their growing conditions.

Two nearby passages served the same row. Joss hung a cloth strip at each mouth and let Ren watch their ordinary flow before beginning.

”Keep the exchange balanced as Tobin changes the feed,” he said. ”The lining won’t respond everywhere at once.”

Ren brought Air to the openings. Tobin moved the slide to the first mark and waited. For a while, both strips held their positions. Then the nearer one eased while the farther one continued lifting.

Ren corrected too strongly. The first strip snapped outward, and the second fluttered against the stone.

”Less,” Joss said. ”Follow what’s reaching the openings.”

Ren eased his working. The farther passage began responding to the reduced feed, and he adjusted with it until both flows settled. When Tobin raised the supply again, he watched for the air’s response instead of following the slide’s movement.

They repeated the changes until Ren could maintain the exchange without Joss correcting him. Tobin then used a different setting and reversed the order. Ren lost the balance once, reset, and tried again.

The delay varied with what the lining still held. He had to follow the changing draw through both passages, strengthening one part of his working while easing another. By the end, he could hold the exchange through the altered sequence as well as the first.

Joss had him repeat it before stopping. Tobin restored the normal feed and checked the outlets while Ren released his Air working.

”Practice that,” Joss said. ”We’ll add another passage when you come back.”

Later, alone beside the stair, Ren asked the System privately for the result.

Maren arranged the introduction to Dalia Fenn during the shade keeper’s rounds.

Dalia carried a board marked in squares. She set it on a stand beside a bed, level with the upper leaves, where patches of sunlight fell between the canopy’s shadows.

”Watch what reaches this part,” she said, pointing to a bright square beside a darker one.

Her Light working spread above the board. The bright patch softened at its edges, and more light reached the shaded squares beside it. The leaves at the same height received the altered light as well. Nobody moved the branches or drew a screen.

Ren could recognize the Law she was using, but he lost the working where it spread beyond the brightest patch.

”I’m redistributing what comes through,” Dalia said. ”This growth does better with it spread across the bed.”

She released the working. The original pattern returned to the board.

”Would you teach me?”

”I can arrange a session. Not before you leave, though. I have the damaged canopy to attend to first.”

Maren had Ren’s return details. They agreed he would contact her for Dalia’s availability before booking another visit. Dalia packed the board and continued down the row; Ren stayed long enough to watch her check the next bed’s light before joining Maren.

The lining remained in place after its outlet air had cooled. Tobin checked the stone through the accessible inspection points, then waited longer before clearing the damaged section for removal.

Ren returned when the crew began cutting. Tobin worked in stages, checking newly exposed layers before continuing. The pieces containing the ends of the split went onto a separate cloth, marked for examination.

”The exposed face cools before the deeper layers,” he told Ren. ”You have to check what you’re going to cut through.”

The removed sections differed. Some crumbled along their damaged edges. In others, the cultivated layers remained joined beneath a broken outer face. Tobin turned two of those pieces over and showed Ren the sound portions.

”The release structure survives here. The seating edges don’t. We won’t reuse these in this branch.”

Lenna sorted the material taken out around the failed root layer. She rejected loose rubble and kept a sample with roots still attached. From the edge of the excavation, she selected two bedstone offcuts with intact webs around open spaces.

”Is this where the load passed around the recesses?” Ren asked.

”Through these connections.” She followed one with her finger. ”The pattern continues deeper in. You can study these pieces, but the broken sections won’t carry a bed as they are.”

Tobin and Lenna inspected the four pieces before signing their release. They retained the split ends, the root-layer sample and the other material they needed for examining the failure.

Maren matched Ren’s collection list to the tags: two kilnstone sections and two bedstone offcuts. The cause of the original damage remained unresolved.

”I’ll send word when they have findings to share,” she said.

The freight crew packed the released pieces with their cut faces protected. Ren checked the destination and collection arrangements before the load left for the port.

Ilse inspected Sol’s stock while the freight was being arranged. She lifted the coverings, checked the new growth and asked Nel about the conditions each bed had been kept in.

Sol waited until she had finished before confirming the quantity. The garden’s clerk took payment and issued the handling notes with the receipt. Nel checked the transport booking against those requirements.

Sol put the purchase papers in his folder beside the completed contract, then joined Ilse for a final look at the selected growth. Their stock would travel under its own booking. Ren’s stone was already on the collection list for a different load.

Vesper’s return booking left the margin they had agreed for Carrow. Before boarding, Ren sent Lyra the answer she had asked for.

Hot in the open, much better under the canopy. They grow the street roofs and tend the air beneath the gardens. One of the keepers taught me to work with a changing heat supply. I’ll try it at home. How’s the lake survey?

Iris met them at the transit hall on Dawnspire. He had sent her the arrival details before leaving Kilnreach.

She glanced at his coat strap, still tucked through its loop, then stepped forward and took his hand.

”How was it?”

”I’ve got a lot to tell you.”

She took his bag as they started toward the Terrace. Ren told her about the covered streets and the bed they had moved, with its wooden marker carried separately in Maren’s coat.

The freight reached the private receiving bay under the release list. Ren checked the four pieces after the handlers unloaded them. Once they had left, he transferred the stone into Verdance alone.

He brought it up from the cove to the Worldroot when he was ready to begin. The tags stayed with the papers; the cultivated faces lay exposed beside the roots.

Ren set the first kilnstone section against the trunk and began Endless Graft. Death opened the site in a thin gray line. Life followed, binding the cultivated layers into the living wood as the join closed beneath his hand.

He followed the Fire structure through the material. A changing supply entered the layers, but its release did not simply rise and fall with that supply. The working held an intended rate through smaller changes, then adjusted as the stored heat increased or diminished.

At Kilnreach, Ren had felt Tobin change the release without yet understanding how the lining maintained it. Through the graft, he could trace more of that relationship within the stone itself.

He stayed with the first join until it settled before bringing the second section into place. Much of its structure overlapped what he had already received. He followed the remaining layers through to the end and let the join finish.

The bedstone came afterward. Its intact webs carried the deeper Earth expression Lenna had shown him. Ren followed pressure through the solid connections around the spaces, feeling how the cultivated working changed the distribution without closing those openings.

He grafted both offcuts, allowing each join to settle. The last exposed edge disappeared beneath green-gold light, and he kept his hand against the bark until the site had closed.

”It’s warm here now, Ren,” Kaia said privately.

He could feel it beneath his palm. He asked the System for the completed result.

[GRAFT COMPLETE.]

[FOUNDATION: 52.1 → 53.4 MILLION TONS.]

[FIRE: 17.1% → 18.3%.]

[EARTH: 10.0% → 11.6%.]

Ren sat on the root beside the graft sites. He went back through the release structure, then the bedstone’s changing load paths. Both gave him something to practice. Neither supplied Tobin’s experience tending a live route or Lenna’s judgment of a garden’s foundations.

He would need smaller workings he could check for himself before attempting either on anything carrying a load. The Air exercise was clearer: two connected passages, with the driving flow changed while he maintained the exchange.

When he rose, all four pieces had been absorbed and the bark had sealed. He put the release papers away with his study notes before leaving the Worldroot.

At Sovereign Dawn’s archive, Ren looked through the catalog of throwing methods.

Farcast was an ordinary energy-control art for a throwing spear. It taught the preparation of the weapon, the transfer of energy through the grip and the timing of its release. The method required a suitable implement; the catalog listed the stresses that its head, haft and joint would need to withstand.

Ren already had ranged attacks. He wanted to learn how to carry a controlled working into a physical projectile without disrupting the throw. Retrieving that projectile afterward would depend on where it landed and whether it survived the impact.

He selected the slip and checked the price. The clerk deducted 1,200 merit and gave him the purchase entry with it.

In the reading room, Ren went through the method before heading home. He made notes on the grip and release sequence, then copied the implement requirements for the craftsperson. Reading the pattern gave him a starting point. He had not yet practiced it with a fitted weapon.

The Glassfire craftsperson read the requirements before going to its stock.

Ren described what he wanted: a worked-glass head that could take the energy transfer, a haft suited to his grip and a weapon he could recover after a throw. He suggested making the head and haft as one piece to avoid a loose joint.

”Then a broken haft costs you the head too,” the craftsperson said. ”I’d rather make the part you’re most likely to damage replaceable.”

It brought two lengths of worked glass and a seasoned wooden shaft to the bench. Holding the glass to the light, it inspected each before choosing one.

”This for the prototype head. Wood for the haft, with a joint I can repair. I’ll need to check the fit before finishing either.”

”Will it take the release?”

”We’ll test that. Show me the loads the method starts with.”

Ren opened his notes at the relevant passage. The craftsperson read it, checked the shaft again, then marked the chosen stock and set it aside. Shaping the head, fitting the joint and checking the assembly would take time; the material was reserved, but there was no finished spear to take away.

It handed him a plain wooden fitting blank and indicated a clear space beside the bench.

”Show me the release without power.”
