The Mafia King of Philadelphia: From witness to his doted wife

It was someone young, she could tell before she could see clearly, the way you could tell from the posture, the particular way young bodies held themselves even when trying to appear otherwise.

Tall. Arms folded across his chest. Standing with the stillness of someone who had been there a while and was in no hurry about it.

”Hi.” She kept her voice even. Friendly even. The voice she used with difficult library patrons, with people who came in angry and needed to be gently redirected.

”Hi... thank goodness. Could you help me?” She pointed past him, into the dark, where the trees had to end somewhere, and somewhere beyond that ending there had to be a road.

”Could you point me toward the main road? I just need a cab or anything, really.” The man looked at her.

He looked at the red dress. The diamonds. The bare feet on the forest floor. The ankle she was very carefully not putting full weight on.

”You look hurt,” he said.

He hadn’t moved. Arms still folded. Keeping his distance in the deliberate way of someone who had been told to keep his distance.

”I’m okay, I’m fine, I just need to know which direction...” He reached for the radio at his hip. The sound of static. One button pressed.

”Found her,” he said. Simply. Completely. Two words that closed every door she’d been calculating.

He turned and walked away into the trees without another word, without looking back, already done with this part of his evening.

”Wait.” She took a step after him, her ankle punishing her immediately. ”Wait... who are you? Please... don’t let them take me back, please, just tell me which way...”

He was already gone. The dark swallowed him the way this world swallowed everything inconvenient quietly, completely, without leaving a mark.

Sienna stood in the trees with her torch, and her ruined ankle and the radio call still ringing in her ears. Found her.

Two words. No hesitation. No conflict in his face, no flicker of anything when she’d said please. She needed to move. Now. The radio meant minutes, maybe less, and she needed. She turned.

He was already there.

She didn’t know when he’d arrived. There had been no sound, no footsteps, no branches, nothing, and then there was simply Viktor, the way Viktor always simply was things, present and inevitable, as if the space had always contained him and she was the one who’d appeared.

The dark hid his face, but it didn’t matter. She knew the height. The breadth of him. The particular architecture of his silhouette.

And the scent, warm and dark and expensive and him, something that her memory had apparently filed without her permission, reached her before anything else did.

His hands found her in one motion.

Not rough. Not gentle either. Simply certain the hands of a man who had located a thing and was now returning it to where it belonged, the way you pick up something fallen, something that is yours, without particular drama.

He lifted her.

One arm under her knees, one at her back, and she was off the ground before she’d fully processed that it was happening, the ankle leaving the problem of weight-bearing behind, the forest floor disappearing beneath her.

He said nothing. He started walking. The silence was its own weather system.

Sienna had approximately fourteen things she wanted to say. She said none of them, partly because she was cataloguing the pain in her ankle, which had opinions about being jostled, and partly because she was learning, slowly, expensively that some silences were better left alone until she knew the shape of what was inside them.

Viktor was angry.

She didn’t need to see his face. She could feel it in the set of his shoulders, the particular controlled quality of his movement, the way his jaw sat in the dark.

The anger of a man who had given orders about every entrance and every exit and every inch of his fortress tonight, and had managed, in the middle of all of it, to misplace his wife.

His wife, who had climbed a wall. In a red dress. With a broken ankle.

Despite everything, despite the pain and the night and the man carrying her back into captivity through a dark forest. Something in Sienna’s chest wanted, very badly, to laugh.

She pressed her lips together and didn’t. The trees thinned.

The grounds opened up floodlights, gravel, the mansion sitting there exactly as she’d left it, enormous and lit and unmoved by her entire escape attempt. And there, almost directly ahead of them. Sienna saw it.

A door.

Small. Set into the garden wall at ground level, half-covered by the same climbing plant that had hidden the ladder. Old iron handle. A door that led, quite clearly from its position, directly outside the estate grounds.

Directly to the road.

She stared at it.

Her mind did the geography instantly, helplessly, where she had climbed, where she had jumped, where she had broken her ankle on a root in the dark, and where this door was sitting, having been there the entire time, twelve feet from where the ladder had been leaning.

Twelve feet. If she had turned left instead of right. If she had walked along the wall instead of away from it.

If she had looked. She had jumped a wall and broken her ankle and been found in the dark by a man with a radio, and the door had been right there, unlocked probably, quiet, ground-level, dignified.

Viktor walked past it without a glance.

Sienna watched it over his shoulder as it fell behind them, getting smaller, the iron handle catching the light once before the angle took it away entirely.

She filed it.

Every detail. The position, the handle, the plant covering it, the gap beneath it where the light from outside came through in a thin bright line.

She filed it the way she filed everything quietly, completely, in the part of her that was already thinking about next time.

Next time, she thought, I won’t jump the wall. Next time, she thought, I won’t break my ankle. Next time...

Viktor carried her through the front door of the Kessler mansion without a word, and the door closed behind them, and the night outside ceased to exist.

For now. Viktor set her on the bed.
