The Mafia King of Philadelphia: From witness to his doted wife

The venue was not what she expected. She didn’t know what she had expected, something like the Kessler mansion, perhaps. Cold marble and controlled elegance, everything expensive and everything warning you about it.

This was different. This was older. Heavier. The building sat back from the street like it didn’t need to introduce itself, flanked by men in dark suits who stood with the particular stillness of people who had learned that moving was a choice, not a reflex. The kind of stillness that came from knowing exactly what they were capable of.

Sienna stepped out of the car. The night air hit her cool, laced with expensive perfume and something underneath it that she couldn’t name. Power, maybe. Or the memory of it.

She looked around slowly. Her stomach did a quiet, traitorous calculation.

The Kessler mansion had felt like a cage. Gilded, climate-controlled, staff who looked away at the right moments. She had been mapping it in her head for days, the east corridor, the garden wall, the window in the east wing that didn’t quite latch.

This place made the mansion look like a revolving door. The guards were everywhere. Not obvious about it, they never were, at this level, but everywhere. At the steps. By the columns. Near the treeline. Men who watched the way surveillance cameras watched, steady and without blinking. And they were bigger here. Quieter in a way that was somehow louder.

Escaping from here, Sienna thought, is going to be significantly more complicated than I thought. Marcus moved to park the car. Two guards stepped out of the car and fell into step with her, not touching, never touching, just present, a quiet bracket around her body, and walked her toward the doors.

She kept her chin up. The red dress moved behind her like it had somewhere to be.

Inside there was noise and light, and the particular performance of very powerful people pretending to relax. Crystal glasses catching chandeliers. Laughter calibrated to carry exactly the right distance.

Women in gowns that cost more than most people earn in a year. Men in suits that fit too well to be accidental. The guards stopped at the door. Sienna stepped in alone.

She was already scanning exits, faces, patterns, who was watching whom and why when she walked directly into a wall. Except the wall caught her. ”Whoa...”

She stepped back. The wall was, in fact, a person. Tall. Broad-shouldered but with an ease about him, a looseness that the other men in this room didn’t have, like he’d been born comfortable in his own body and had never thought to question it. Long dark hair pulled back.

A jaw that some sculptor had clearly put real effort into. Dark eyes that were, at this precise moment, extremely amused.

He looked down at her.

Then he looked, briefly, at the two guards still visible through the glass doors. Then at the red dress. A slow grin moved across his face.

”Well,” he said. ”Hello there, beautiful.” Sienna straightened.

”Looking at the men following you...” His eyes moved back to the guards, then to her, lazy and unrushed... ”and the dress... I’ve got two guesses.” He tilted his head. ”Are you Viktor’s new plaything?”

The word plaything moved through her like a blade. She kept her face perfectly still. ”Are you a friend of his,” she said, ”or an enemy?”

He blinked. Clearly not the response he’d been expecting. Something shifted in his expression, amusement sharpened into something more like interest. ”A friend,” he said. ”If you want to put it that way.” A small pause. ”More like family, actually.” Of course. ”I see,” Sienna said. ”Then get lost.”

She moved to step around him.

”You’ve got quite the attitude.” He sidestepped, not blocking her, exactly, more like staying in conversation. ”I like that.” And then, almost to himself, tilting his head again at the dress, ”But wait. You can’t be with Viktor.”

She stopped despite herself. ”Why not?” she said flatly.

”Because you’re in red.” He said it simply, like it was obvious, like it was weather. ”He hates red. More than anything. Like, on a visceral level he won’t have it in a room.”

”Whatever you’re doing right now, it is absolutely working.” Sienna looked at him. ”I’m glad,” she said. He laughed. Not a polished laugh, a real one, sudden and genuine, like it surprised even him. It bounced off the marble and the crystal, and the careful performances of the room around them, and a few heads turned, because laughing like that, in a place like this, was almost rebellious.

”By the way,” he said, and extended his hand with the easy confidence of someone who had never once worried about whether he’d be liked, ”I’m Marcel. Marcel Kessler.”

She looked at the hand. Then at him.

”I see,” she said. ”A Kessler.” She did not take the hand.

”I’m Sienna.” She turned. ”Goodbye.”

”Hey... hey, wait...”

She kept walking.

”Listen.” He was beside her somehow, long legs eating the distance without apparent effort.

”I’m not a bad person. I just want to be your friend. That’s genuinely all this is.”

”And I’m genuinely not interested.” She didn’t look at him. ”So bye.”

”Wait... wait...” He stepped in front of her, carefully, hands raised, the universal language of I come in peace.

”Are you.. ” Something clicked in his face, recognition assembling itself piece by piece... ”Are you the famous librarian wife everyone is talking about?”

Sienna stopped.

”The famous...” she turned to look at him fully. ”I’m sorry, what?”

”The librarian.” His eyes were bright. ”You’re all anyone’s been talking about tonight. Viktor Kessler shows up to the Morozov gala with a wife... ” he said it like it was the punchline of the best joke he’d heard in years... ”a librarian wife... nobody had seen before,”

”Famous,” Sienna repeated the word like she was examining it for damage. ”No idea what you’re talking about.”

She walked away.

”Sienna!” His voice carried behind her, warm and unbothered and entirely too much. ”The night is long! You’ll need a friend before it’s over, trust me on that one!”

She did not turn around. But she filed it away the laugh, the easy warmth, the way he’d said family like it cost him nothing
