The Mafia King of Philadelphia: From witness to his doted wife

The broad-shouldered man didn’t even glance back at him.

”Girl.” He turned the word over like it amused him. Looked back at Sienna with something that passed for a smile. ”She’s a plaything, brother. Don’t get sentimental.” He raised his voice just enough for the room to hear, the way men do when they’re performing for an audience they’ve already decided agrees with them.

”He gets bored. You know how he is. Tosses them out like last week’s paper.” He paused. Let his eyes move over her in a way that made her skin crawl.

”Might as well let the boys have a little fun while there’s still time. Before the expiration date.”

Low laughter from two chairs. The older man at the table said nothing. Someone’s cigarette burned down another millimeter. The man reached for her again.

The slap cracked through the room like a gunshot.

Sienna’s palm connected with his cheek before she’d consciously decided to do it , pure reflex, pure fury, the kind that lives below thought. Her hand stung. She didn’t move. Didn’t step back. Didn’t breathe differently.

Let him see nothing, she told herself. Give him nothing.

The man’s head had turned with the impact. He held it there for a moment, almost thoughtful. Then slowly, slowly, he turned back to look at her.

”You bitch.” The word came out quiet, which was worse than if he’d shouted it. Red was climbing his neck. His jaw was set in a way that meant something had shifted, past performance, past posturing, into something uglier and more honest. He looked over his shoulder at the table. ”Grab her.”

Chairs scraped back. One. Two. Three.

Sienna’s spine went rigid. She catalogued the room in half a second, card table, seven men, one door behind her she’d never reach in heels, no exits she could see that weren’t already being closed off by bodies twice her size.

She’d slapped a man in a room full of his friends and she was wearing a white dress and ivory shoes and she had absolutely no follow-through to offer.

So that’s it then. She shut her eyes. Braced. Let the last good thought she had be the sound of Simon’s laugh, far away and golden, already fading. The impact she heard was not for her.

It was for him. A single sound, brutal and sudden, the dull crack of force applied without ceremony and then the man who had called her a whore was airborne. Briefly an dviolently.

He hit the floor eight feet from where he’d been standing with the graceless weight of a man who had not chosen to be there, skidding across the marble until the baseboard decided he’d gone far enough.

There was silence, complete and total silence. The kind that has a texture. Sienna opened her eyes. Viktor Kessler stood where the man had been.

He hadn’t straightened yet, still in the last inch of the movement, the follow-through of whatever force he’d used, one hand still loose at his side.

He was dressed like the men at the table, black, ruthlessly simple but on him it read differently. Authority didn’t require ornamentation.

He’d apparently learned that early. His jaw was set. His eyes were on the man crumpled against the baseboard, and his expression was not the expression of a man who was angry.

It was the expression of a man who has made a very calm decision. Which was, Sienna was beginning to understand, significantly more frightening.

The three men who had stood up were sitting back down. Carefully without being asked. Without making any noise about it at all.

The room did not breathe. Viktor’s eyes moved from the floor to the table, slow, touching each face with the particular quality of attention that made men remember things they’d rather forget. No one spoke. The cigar on the table’s edge had burned to ash while no one was watching.

Then he turned. And for the first time since she’d heard his name this morning, Sienna looked at him properly. Straight on. In the light. She kept her chin level. She kept her hands still. She gave him nothing but her eyes.

It wasn’t enough. One hand wrapped in the man’s collar, Viktor dragged him upright like he weighed nothing, like he was a problem to be repositioned rather than a person and slammed him face-first into the card table. Cards scattered. A glass shattered on the floor. Nobody moved to clean it up.

Viktor leaned down, mouth close to the man’s ear. His voice dropped to something that was almost conversational. Almost gentle. That particular register that every man in the room recognized as the most dangerous frequency he owned.

”It seems like you forgot,” he said quietly, ”who the boss was.”

”Boss...I just...” The man’s voice came out wrong. Flattened. The marble table had something to do with that. ”I didn’t mean... she was just... I only...”

”Did I say you could speak?” The words weren’t loud. They didn’t need to be.

What followed was not pretty. It was not cinematic. It was not the choreographed violence of men who fight for sport, it was the efficient, unhurried brutality of a man who is making a point he intends to make only once. Fist. Then again. The man stopped trying to form sentences somewhere around the third impact and moved directly into something more primal and honest.

”Please.” Ragged. Wet. Barely a word anymore. ”Please... boss.. please...”

Viktor straightened. Looked down at him the way you look at a mess you’re deciding whether to clean up yourself or leave for someone else.

”If I catch you looking at her again.” He reached down, gathered the man’s collar one last time, and held it just long enough for the words to travel all the way in. ”I will burry a bullet into your eyes. You understand me? You will eat it.”

He released the shirt. The man dropped.

Viktor stepped back. Adjusted his cuff. Looked at the table, the scattered cards, the broken glass, the ruin of a casual morning, with the mild expression of a man surveying weather.

”Get out.” Not loud. Not performed. Just final. ”Don’t smoke in my house.” A pause, eyes cutting across every remaining face like a blade across a thumb. ”Move.” They moved.
