The Mafia King of Philadelphia: From witness to his doted wife

In the ringing silence that followed, Sienna looked down at the wreckage glass, wine spreading across pale marble, and at the centre of it, in pieces that were immediately and obviously irreversible, the vase.

She pressed her lips together.

Then she looked up. ”Oh, my God.” Aliya’s voice rang across the silence, clear and horrified and pitched perfectly for the room.

”What have you done?” She pressed a hand to her mouth. Her eyes were wide with a distress so convincing that Sienna almost, almost wanted to applaud.

”Two million dollars.” Her voice dropped into something almost reverent with shock. ”That vase. Do you have any idea?” She turned to the nearest guests, who were already watching, already gathering, the catastrophe pulling people in the way catastrophes do.

”I tried to stop her,” Aliya said, shaking her head, her voice full of a pained, reluctant helplessness. ”I reached for her, but she just... she has no control, I don’t.”

The room murmured. Eyes moved to Sienna. To the broken vase.

To the red dress that had been the subject of every conversation since she’d walked in, now standing at the centre of a different kind of scene entirely. Sienna looked at Aliya.

Aliya looked back at her. And for one transparent, unguarded second beneath the performance, beneath the perfectly calibrated distress, her eyes said, Your move.

Sienna felt the room pressing in around her. Felt the weight of it, the judgment, the story already writing itself in the minds of every witness the librarian wife, new and out of place, breaking priceless things, wild, no control, no control she felt all of it, and she felt something else too.

The particular, dangerous calm that settled over her sometimes, when everything had gone wrong enough that panic became unnecessary.

She looked at the broken vase. She looked at Aliya. She looked at the room. And she smiled slowly, composed, unbothered, the smile of a woman who had read approximately four thousand books and understood, better than most, how stories worked.

”You’re right,” she said to Aliya, gently, pleasantly, as if they were still discussing wine. ”It was an accident.” She looked down at the wreckage once more.

”Terrible thing,” she said. ”Somebody really should have been watching it more carefully.” She set her champagne flute on the nearest surface. Smoothed the front of her dress.

The man moved through the parting crowd like he owned every inch of it. Which, Sienna realised, he probably did.

He was older, mid-fifties, perhaps, with the kind of face that had once been handsome and had since become something harder, more deliberate. Silver at his temples. A suit that cost more than the vase. And eyes that moved over Sienna the way hands moved slow, assessing, entirely without apology.

She held her ground.

Behind him, Elena had materialised Viktor’s stepmother with the elegant bun, the posture of someone who had been architecting disasters since before Sienna was born. She stood just slightly back, just slightly to the left, the position of a woman who preferred to let rooms happen while she remained technically uninvolved.

Sienna filed it away. His stepmother, something in the back of her mind noted. Marcel’s mother. The pieces assembled themselves quietly.

”It was an accident,” Sienna said.

Her voice was steady. Her head was up. She looked him directly in the eye, because looking away was a language she refused to speak tonight. ”I didn’t know he was behind me.” The man looked at her.

The looking went on a beat too long. ”She’s just a nobody,” Elena said from behind him, her voice carrying the mild tone of someone discussing a minor inconvenience, a stain, a scheduling conflict, something easily resolved.

She didn’t look at Sienna when she said it. She looked at the man. ”Perhaps you handle this as you would with anyone who makes a mess of your party.”

Sienna looked at her then. Elena, to her credit, looked back with complete serenity.

The man’s eyes moved back to Sienna.

He stepped closer. One step. Calibrated. The distance of a man who understood that proximity was its own kind of power.

”Those glasses and the vase,” he said. His voice was soft. That particular softness that had nothing to do with gentleness. ”Three million.”

He tilted his head. The eyes moved over her again. Slower this time. Something in them that Sienna felt on her skin like something physical, something she wanted to step out of.

”So.” A small pause. Almost conversational. Almost pleasant. ”What should I break your leg?” A beat.

”Your hand?” Another beat, and his voice dropped lower, just for her, just barely, the words landing like something dirty

”Or a night in my bed.” He smiled. ”Your choices.” The room was very, very quiet.

From the far end of the crowd, Marcel had stopped moving.

He had been working his way through the gathered guests with the practiced ease of a man who had broken up this particular kind of situation before. His mother’s arrangements had a recurring structure, he’d learned to recognise the architecture, and he’d been perhaps thirty seconds away from arriving with something light and defusing, something that would give Sienna an exit and cost nobody too much face.

He stopped. Looked at the man. Looked at Sienna. Looked at the exit routes available. And recalculated.

The gunshot answered everyone.

One shot. Clean, sharp, decisive, fired upward, the sound cracking through the gala like reality breaking open, and the room erupted, the carefully constructed social order dissolving in an instant into the animal thing it had always been underneath people dropping, scattering, ducking behind tables and bars and each other, champagne glasses hitting the floor, someone screaming and someone else telling them to stop.

And then silence.

The particular silence of a room that has just been reminded of what kind of room it is. Viktor walked through it.

Through the overturned chairs and the scattered guests and the broken things, through the space the crowd had torn open without being asked, and he walked the way he always walked, like the chaos was weather, like it was someone else’s problem, like there was only one direction and he was already going there.

He was still holding the gun. His eyes found Sienna first.

He crossed the last few feet between them and stopped, and looked at her the way you look at something you are checking for damage quickly, completely, nothing left undone about it.

”Are you okay?” Sienna nodded. One nod. Small. Steady.
