The Mafia King of Philadelphia: From witness to his doted wife

Simon’s head turned first. The woman looked a half second later.

The scramble began, the ugly, graceless panic of two people grabbing for clothes and cushions and dignity they had already spent, and Sienna stood completely still and let the full picture arrive.

The woman reached for a robe from the back of the couch. Sienna’s stomach dropped through the floor.

”Lily.”

The name came out of her like something broken. Barely a word. More like the sound a word makes when all the meaning has been knocked out of it.

Lily Brown. Her best friend. Her best friend since the sixth grade, since the science project about volcanoes that had gone badly and ended with both of them covered in baking soda and laughing until they couldn’t breathe.

Lily, who knew every secret Sienna had ever had. Lily, who had texted her, thinking of you, babe, just last week.

Lily, who was now pulling a robe closed and having the nerve to look caught rather than destroyed. ”What...” The sound left Sienna’s lips like air from something punctured. ”Lily, you ...”

The tears came properly now. She couldn’t stop them. She didn’t even try. ”Listen...” Simon was moving toward her, one hand pressed to his boxers, the other reaching for her like she was something he could still catch.

His face had the particular expression of a man who is calculating very fast and does not like the numbers. ”My love. I promise... it’s not what it looks like, I swear to you it’s not...”

”I need to ...” Sienna stepped back. Her throat was closing. The cough started low in her chest.. the way it always did when the stress got past a certain point, when her body decided to add its own opinion to a situation.

”I need to get out... I need to...” The cough took over. It shook through her, one after another, unstoppable.

Lily was already moving to the kitchen calmly. The way she always was in a crisis, which Sienna had always admired and now found she could not look at directly.

She came back with a glass of water. Extended it. Her face arranged into something that was trying for concern. ”Sienna. Take this.”

”I don’t want anything.” Sienna’s voice cracked down the middle. ”From either of you.”

She turned for the door. ”Oh, stop it.” Lily’s voice shifted. The concern fell away like a coat she’d been holding loosely. What was underneath it was harder and less patient, and much more honest.

”Stop being childish. You disappeared. You just vanished. Simon thought you’d left him. I came to console him and things...” she paused, the pause of someone selecting a word, ”... happened. These things happen, Sienna.”

Sienna stopped walking.

”And honestly?” Lily continued, and her voice had taken on the particular quality of someone who has been waiting a long time to say something and has now decided the moment has arrived.

”You have no one to blame but yourself. Two years, Sienna. For two years, you wouldn’t give him anything. The poor man was...”

”Starving,” Sienna said quietly. She turned around. Looked at Lily. Looked at Simon. ”Right.”

”I’m just being honest.”

”You’re just being you.” She said it without heat. Without drama. Just the flat, tired truth of a woman who had been kidnapped, chased through the city in a wedding dress, and had now arrived here, of all places, to find that the world had kept burning perfectly well in her absence.

”That’s always been your gift, Lily. Dressing it up like honesty.”

Simon crossed the room. Took the glass from Lily’s hand. He was close now, close enough that she could smell his cologne, the one she had bought him for his birthday, and she hated her nose for remembering that.

”Just drink the water.” His voice had gone soft. The voice he used when he wanted something. She had loved that voice for two years.

”Your throat is burning, I can hear it. Drink the water and let me explain. I will never hurt you again, I swear, I...”

She grabbed the glass.

Fine. She needed to stop coughing. She needed her voice back and her lungs back and every available resource her body had left, because she still had to walk out of this apartment and figure out what came next. She could fall apart about Simon later. She could fall apart about Lily later. Later. Not now.

She drank. The water was cold. She smashed the glass on the floor.

”Don’t call me.” She said it to both of them. Calm, clear, final. She turned toward the door and gathered the dress in her fists one more time. ”Don’t look for me. Don’t ...”

The room tilted. She blinked. That’s strange.

She took one more step, and the floor seemed to think about moving. Her hand found the doorframe. She gripped it. Concentrated on the simple geography of staying upright.

What...

The thought arrived slowly, swimming up through something thick and heavy that was settling over her brain like a blanket.

The water. She turned back. Lily was watching her with an expression Sienna had never seen on her face before. Not guilt. Not shame.

Something quieter. Something that had been decided before Sienna ever walked through the door.

Simon’s face was the last thing she saw clearly. He wasn’t sorry. The floor came up to meet her.

Sienna’s head spun. The room tilted.

”What’s wrong, Sienna?” Simon asked, catching her just as her eyes rolled back. She went totally limp in his arms. ”Wake up!” Simon panicked.

Nearby, Lily didn’t even look up. She just blew gently on her freshly painted nails. ”Oh, chill out. She’s fine.”

”Listen to me,” Lily purred, stepping closer. ”You want that big promotion, right? You’ve been stressing about it for weeks. Well, I did some homework. Your boss loves Sienna. And bonus? He likes young, innocent girls. Sienna is perfect. She won’t remember a thing, she loves you, and she’ll forgive you anyway.”

Simon froze, thinking it over. A dark smile crept onto his face. ”You’re right. You always think of everything.”

”Great!” Lily smirked. ”Let’s get her to his place. She’s already wearing a wedding dress anyway. Perfect for a wedding night... or, well, a wedding afternoon.”
