The Mafia King of Philadelphia: From witness to his doted wife

Viktor moved.

He didn’t announce it. Didn’t excuse himself. Didn’t so much as glance at Aliya, whose sentence was still hanging in the air between them, unfinished, cooling.

He simply began walking.

Through the crowd which parted, because crowds always parted for Viktor Kessler, because the alternative was unthinkable, steady, unhurried, purposeful. The way a man moves when he is entirely certain of his direction and entirely certain of what he will do when he arrives.

His eyes had not left her since the moment the doors opened. Not once.

The red dress. The diamonds. The way she had walked in like this whole room was a door she’d decided to open. The whole room watched him cross it to get to her. And the whispers changed.

Not fear anymore. Not gossip. Something more complicated. Something that sounded quietly, reluctantly, around the rims of crystal glasses and behind carefully raised hands.

Almost like awe.

Sienna had taken approximately eleven steps into the room.

She was scanning exits, faces, patterns, the same quiet inventory she’d been running since the car when she became aware of it. The whispers. The watching.

The slow, collective intake of breath moves through the room like a tide. She felt him before she saw him. The crowd ahead of her shifted, parted, and then there was no crowd at all.

Just Viktor. Walking toward her through a sea of black.

His face was unreadable. It was always unreadable. But his eyes, his eyes were doing the thing they had done in the lobby, the thing she hadn’t had a name for yet, the thing that lived somewhere underneath fury and somewhere above something else entirely.

He stopped. Three feet away. The room held its breath.

Viktor looked at her, really looked, the kind of look that takes inventory, that accounts for every deliberate choice, the dress and the diamonds and the angle of her chin, and said nothing.

The silence stretched. And stretched. And then, very quietly, so that only she could hear it.

”You wore red,” he said. Sienna met his eyes without flinching. ”You said I could choose,” she said.

Another silence. And then in the space between one heartbeat and the next, in front of every mafia lord and crime family, and whisper in that room, the corner of Viktor Kessler’s mouth moved.

Not a smile. Not quite. But something.

Something that made the watching crowd exhale all at once and look quickly away, as if they had just seen something private. Something that made Aliya, across the room, set down her untouched glass of wine.

Something that made Marcel Kessler, at the bar, pick his drink back up and raise it in a silent toast to nobody in particular. And something that made Sienna’s heart her foolish, inconvenient, traitorous heart...

Slam once, hard, against her ribs. Stop it, she told it. Absolutely not, it replied.

He was close enough that she felt it before she heard it the warmth of him, the particular gravity of a man who took up more space than his body required, and then his voice, low and private, bypassing the entire room as if it didn’t exist.

”Red looks good on you.” Sienna kept her face completely still.

Around them, the room held its careful distance. Not too close, nobody got too close to Viktor Kessler without an invitation, but not too far either. The watching continued, peripheral and relentless, the way this world always watched.

She turned her head slightly. Just enough. ”Let me guess,” she said, voice light, face pleasantly neutral. ”It’s your favourite colour?”

His mouth curved. Not the almost-smile from before, something more deliberate this time. More dangerous.

”No,” he said. He let the word sit for exactly one beat too long.

”My favourite colour..” and he leaned in, just slightly, just enough that the words landed only for her... ”is you in nothing.”

Sienna rolled her eyes.

She didn’t plan it. It simply happened as the most natural, involuntary response her body could produce to that sentence, and she was already doing it before the more sensible part of her brain could file any objections.

Viktor went very still.

”Did you just...” he said, and there was something in his voice she hadn’t heard before, something caught between disbelief and was that delight? Surely not. Surely that was not delight on the face of Viktor Kessler... ”Did you just roll your eyes at me?”

He glanced around them, almost imperceptible. In the room. At the carefully not-watching faces. At the men in dark suits who had built careers on the understanding that Viktor Kessler was not a man at whom one rolled their eyes.

”In a room full of my enemies,” he said. Sienna looked at him. And rolled her eyes again.

Slower this time. Something moved across his face that she could not fully read a whole weather system, too fast and too layered, there and gone in the space of a breath. His jaw shifted.

His eyes tracked her face the way you track something you are still in the process of understanding.

The silence between them had a texture. Then he exhaled barely, just barely, and something in his shoulders shifted. The subtlest rearrangement.

The way a man adjusts when the thing in front of him has refused, for the third time, to behave like anything he has encountered before. He offered her his arm.

She took it.

Not because she wanted to. Because the room was watching and she was playing a longer game than tonight, and Sienna Vale...Sienna Kessler, the universe reminded her, unhelpfully, had always been better at chess than people expected.

They moved to the centre of the room together.

And the room felt it, the shift, the weight of it, Viktor Kessler walking his wife through a sea of the most dangerous people in three countries, her in red, him in black, the diamonds at her throat catching every light.

People stepped aside not because they were asked to.

They stepped aside because this was the kind of thing you stepped aside for, the way you stepped aside for weather.

”I’ll get you a drink,” Viktor said.

He turned to face her, and up close, insufferably, inconveniently close, he was exactly as difficult to look at directly as he had always been. All sharp angles and dark eyes and the particular confidence of a man who had never once in his life needed to ask a room for its attention.

A beat. The corner of his mouth.

”Try not to get into trouble,” he said. And then, softer, almost as an afterthought.

”Wifey.”
