The Mafia King of Philadelphia: From witness to his doted wife

The gala was in full bloom in the main hall. That was the only word for it, to bloom the way something beautiful grows in soil that isn’t clean.

The chandeliers threw gold across everything. The champagne was real. The flowers were imported. The laughter was practiced, and the smiles were sharp, and underneath all of it, if you knew where to look, ran the quiet current of what this world actually was.

It smelled of money and power. And the particular kind of danger that wore a tuxedo.

Elena Kessler did not look like what she was. That was, of course, entirely the point.

She stood near the far end of the room in a black gown that had been chosen with surgical precision, elegant enough to belong anywhere, simple enough to disappear when she needed to, fitted enough to remind every person in the room that disappearing was her choice.

Her hair was pinned up in a dark, elaborate bun. Her posture was a sentence that began with I have been in rooms like this my whole life and ended with, and I have outlasted everyone in them.

Beside her stood Aliya, she was in her late twenties, wearing a lack mermaid dress, long hair loose over one shoulder, the kind of face that rooms reorganised themselves around. She was holding a glass of white wine she hadn’t touched yet, too careful for that, too aware of where she was and what tonight needed to be.

She was watching the entrance.

They both were. ”He’s here,” Elena said quietly.

Viktor stood in the corner.

He always stood in corners, not from shyness, nothing so human as that, but because corners gave you the full room. Corners meant nothing could approach from behind. Viktor Kessler had not survived this long by standing in the middle of things.

He was in black, naturally. He was always in black. Still and remote as a lighthouse, except lighthouses warned you away from danger, and Viktor Kessler had never warned anyone of anything.

His eyes were fixed on the entrance. Waiting. Elena watched him for a moment. Then...

”Make sure you are the only woman in Viktor’s eyes tonight,” she said, her voice low and even, the way you deliver instructions that are also warnings. ”Let his attention be yours.”

Aliya’s jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. ”But he just got married,” she said. ”To somebody else.”

”To the famous librarian.” Elena’s lip curved. ”Which is very disappointing. I’m being replaced by a librarian.”

”She’s not here,” Elena said. Her eyes moved back to Viktor. Back to the entrance. ”Which means she doesn’t matter. He is yours tonight.” A pause, clean and final as a door closing. ”You’ve got every shot.”

Aliya moved across the room the way she’d been moving across rooms since she was seventeen, like the floor was doing her a favour.

”Viktor.” She arrived at his side, close, the perfume preceding her by exactly the right amount. ”How delightful to see you again.”

She leaned in for the kiss. It didn’t come.

Viktor moved not dramatically, not rudely, just away, the smallest shift of his body, the kind of rejection that didn’t even acknowledge itself as rejection.

”Keep your distance,” he said. Flat. Final. His eyes didn’t leave the entrance. Aliya blinked. Recovered instantly.

”Oh, come on.” She softened her voice, tilted her head, and deployed the smile that had ended three men’s better judgment. ”Don’t you miss me? One dance. Let’s give these people something to talk about.”

She watched his profile.

He had always been cold. She had known that. Had, in the particular way of certain women around certain men, decided that cold was something that could be warmed with the right hands.

But this... this was different. This was colder than she had ever seen. ”I don’t dance with just any woman,” Viktor said.

”Any woman.” She let the words sit there for a moment, let her voice drop into something low and private. ”Viktor. Come on. Be honest.” A small laugh. ”No woman in this room can hold a candle to...”

Then the doors of the main hall opened. The sound didn’t change.

The music kept playing. The conversations kept moving. Crystal still touched crystal somewhere across the room.

But something shifted. The way a room shifts when a window opens, a change in pressure, invisible, undeniable, everybody in the space registering it before any mind did.

Sienna walked in.

She walked in the way she had walked out of that bedroom, head up, chin level, the red dress following behind her like a second sentence to a statement nobody had expected her to make.

The diamonds at her throat caught the chandeliers and threw the light back with total indifference. Her hair fell exactly how it wanted to. She looked like she had been invited specifically.

She looked like she had dressed specifically for this room, for these people, for this exact moment. And not one part of her looked afraid.

The whispers started at the edges and moved inward, the way fire moves.

Oh my God, look at her necklace....She looks absolutely gorgeous....I thought Aliya was the star tonight....Wait, is she Viktor’s wife? .... It can’t be. Viktor hates red. He hates it more than..

Mr. Alino’s daughter wore red to the Castellano event, remember? The host had her removed. She was dragged out, not even asked... This poor girl is in for the night of her life...

The whispers multiplied, threading through the black suits and black gowns like a current, and the room, without quite meaning to, began to watch.

At the bar, Marcel Kessler had just accepted a fresh drink. He took one look at the entrance, one look across the room at his brother, and set the drink back down untouched.

His mouth curved. Oh, he thought. Oh, this woman.

At the far end of the room, Elena had gone very still. She looked at the red dress. She looked at Viktor’s face. She looked back at the red dress.

Beside her, Aliya had stopped mid-sentence, whatever she’d been saying, wherever the sentence had been going, it was gone now. Lost. The glass of white wine finally tilted slightly in her hand, threatening to spill.

She was staring. They were all staring.
