The Mafia King of Philadelphia: From witness to his doted wife

In the back seat, in the red dress, with the diamonds still cold at her throat and one heel dangling from her fingers because her feet had simply stopped cooperating somewhere around the third catastrophe of the evening.

Sienna was making plans.

Not Viktor’s kind of plans. Not Marco’s kind, careful, strategic, the chess of men who had been playing this particular game their whole lives.

Hers. The only kind that mattered to her.

Get out, said the plan. Before any of this, the war, the Morozovs, the men on the steps, the next thing, and there will be a next thing. There is always a next thing before all of it comes down, and you are standing in the middle of it in a red dress with no way out.

Get out now. Tonight. Before he remembers you exist. The gates opened.

The Kessler mansion appeared at the end of the drive, all lit up, enormous, the kind of building that looked like permanence, like something that had always been there and always would be. Like a fact.

The car stopped.

Viktor was out before it fully settled, door open, moving with the barely-contained energy of a man who needed to be doing something immediately or the something would happen without him.

He was talking before his feet hit the gravel, guards converging from the corners of the grounds, from the gate, from the house, the whole apparatus of the Kessler security machine clicking into motion around him.

”Nobody in or out. Every entrance. I want eyes on the east wall, the service road, the garden perimeter.”

Orders. Rapid, precise, the vocabulary of a man doing what he was built to do. The guards listened. Responded. Reorganised.

Marco was out of the car, close to Viktor’s side, phone already raised, his own chain of calls beginning.

Sienna stepped out of the car quietly.

She did it the way she had done most things tonight, without announcing it, without drawing a line under it, just simply doing it and letting the world catch up. Her bare feet touched the gravel, and she gathered the red dress in both hands and stood for a moment, just a moment, watching.

Viktor’s back was to her. The guards were watching Viktor. Marco was watching his phone. The gate was locked.

She looked at it, the iron of it, the height of it, the security pad blinking steadily in the dark. No. She looked at the wall.

And there, half-hidden by the sprawl of an old climbing plant, leaning against the stone with the casual patience of something that had been forgotten rather than placed.

A ladder. She moved toward it carefully. Slowly. The gravel was cold and sharp under her bare feet, and she had approximately thirty seconds before someone’s peripheral vision found her, so she moved with the focused unhurriedness of a woman who had decided that thirty seconds was enough.

The ladder was heavier than it looked.

She got it upright. Positioned it against the wall with both hands, the metal biting into her palms, the red dress threatening to catch on everything, and she waited one breath, two while Viktor’s voice continued on the other side of the grounds, still giving orders, still building his fortress around a woman who was no longer inside it.

She climbed.

Rung by rung in the dark, the dress bundled under one arm, the diamonds swinging once and then settling, and she did not look down, and she did not look back, and she did not let herself think about anything except the next rung and the one after that.

The top of the wall. She swung her leg over. Looked down at the other side. Jump, she told herself. She jumped.

The dark came up fast.

She landed badly, one foot finding solid ground, the other finding something uneven, a root or a stone or the specific cruelty of the universe, and she felt it immediately, the sharp bright wrongness of it shooting up from her ankle, and she bit down on the sound before it escaped and stood very still for three seconds, breathing through it.

Broken, said some calm clinical part of her brain. Or sprained, said the optimistic part. Keep moving, said the part that had watched the men on the steps.

She kept moving.

The outside of the Kessler wall was dark in a way that the inside was no floodlights here, no carefully maintained grounds, just the dark and the trees and the smell of soil and night air and freedom, if freedom was real, if she had actually done this.

She had actually done this.

The trees closed around her as she limped forward, the red dress catching on branches, the diamonds completely absurd out here in the dark woods, and she almost laughed again, but she was saving her breath for walking.

She reached for her phone.

Torch. She needed the torch. She needed to see where she was going, how far the trees went, whether there was a road, whether. The light came on. White and clean and immediate, cutting through the dark ahead of her.

And it caught something. A shape.

Standing in the trees, perhaps twenty feet away, perfectly still in the way that things were still when they had been still for a while, when they had been waiting, when the stillness was not accidental.

Sienna stopped. Her ankle screamed. Her heart forgot what it was doing.

The torch held steady in her shaking hand, and the light held on the shape in the trees, and the shape did not move, and the night around her was very, very quiet. And then a twig snapped.

Somewhere behind her. Close. Sienna walked toward the shape in the trees.

She had made a decision somewhere between the wall and the ground, somewhere in the brief, weightless second of the jump, that she was done being afraid of things she couldn’t see. Fear was expensive, and she was already running a deficit tonight.

So she walked forward. Limped forward. The torch was held out in front of her like an argument. The shape resolved itself into a person.
