Quick Transmigration: The Cannon Fodder's Comeback in the Era Tales

Chapter 600: Chapter 600: Counterattack of the Original Female Lead 35

Yuan Chun nodded, ”My family’s reply should have arrived as well, but I’m not favored at home. It’s good enough if my parents don’t ask me for money, so I shouldn’t expect them to send me anything.”

On the day she and Yan Hui went to pick up their marriage certificate, she sent a letter to the Xia family, informing them of her upcoming marriage and casually asking them to send some dowry along.

Yuan Chun just wanted to test the Xia family.

If the Xia family did send her dowry, then she would treat them as ordinary relatives in the future, and during holidays and festivals, she would also send some gifts to her parents.

But if the Xia family didn’t give her dowry and even asked her for the bride price, then she would pretend she didn’t have maternal relatives, and she would retrieve all the money the original owner had sent back previously.

Heartless parents, who are they to deserve my filial piety?

The next day, it started raining early, but for vegetable farmers, a rainy day is still a working day. If they don’t pick the vegetables, what will city people eat?

Just after Yuan Chun finished eating, Cao Meng came by in a raincoat to call her to work.

Yuan Chun said, ”I’m taking a day off today, you and Zheng Jun can go together.”

In the vegetable field, there were cabbages, Chinese cabbage, and napa cabbage—vegetables that didn’t need washing—and the educated youth did the work of chopping the vegetables in the field.

After chopping, the men from the village would carry them out of the field, and then the women would remove the outer leaves and clean them up.

There was less work than before, so if villagers asked for leave, the team leader would allow it.

Yuan Chun and Yan Hui went to the county town by tractor that was used for delivering vegetables from the village.

Upon arriving at the county town, they headed straight for the post office.

”Comrade Yan Hui, Comrade Xia Yuan Chun, perfect timing, there’s mail for you and a package,” the comrade at the post office said, handing over two letters and a big package to the couple.

When Yuan Chun looked at the name on the package, it was Yan Hui’s.

She took the letter addressed to her, opened it, and as she read, her heart grew colder with each line.

The Xia family not only asked her for a bride price of 120 yuan but also for ”Three Rounds and a Sound,” saying this is the dowry and gift that the man should give to the woman’s family.

”Three Rounds and a Sound” felt too onerous; it could be mailed or replaced with money sent to the family.

The letter from the Xia family spoke with righteous confidence, as if it was perfectly justified.

After reading, Yuan Chun slowly folded it up, put it in her pocket, and muttered to her own internal system, ”007, don’t you think it’s absurd that the original owner is the Xia family’s only daughter? Even if the Xia family parents are biased towards boys over girls, they can’t push their only daughter to death, right? Don’t they realize that the daughter’s spouse in the countryside might not afford that much?”

007: ”Even if they realized it, so what? They just want to suck the life out of the original owner.”

”In the first life, after the original owner got into university and married into a good family, the Xia family treated her like a cash machine. At first, it was a hundred yuan, then five hundred, and later a thousand, ten thousand. In the end, they wanted her to support her nephews’ and nieces’ university fees, help them find jobs, and even buy houses and cars for the nephews and provide dowries for the nieces. If anything displeased them, the Xia family would make the original owner’s life unbearable.”

”If it weren’t for the fact that the Xia family’s antics got too out of hand later, discovered by Yan Hui, who secretly dealt with them harshly a few times, scaring them off, they would’ve drained the Yan family’s assets completely.”

Yuan Chun sighed and said helplessly, ”So, when dealing with some thick-skinned, shameless relatives, you have to strike hard and fast, hit them so they won’t dare bother me again.”
