Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 1171: Chapter 1172: Found the Painting

Honest Shi, Xiang Mingying’s father-in-law, was right beside them, puffing away at a rolled cigarette. Seeing them go in and Ho Laidi even slamming the door shut with a snap, he couldn’t help but say to Xiang Mingying, ”Should we tell Chiang Laoer about this? I ran into them in town yesterday; they should be there right now.”

Chiang Songhai and his family had indeed returned, just not to the village itself.

Now there were visitors at his home, well, they weren’t exactly visitors—wasn’t Deng Qingjiang’s wife, Chiang Songhai’s daughter-in-law?

Most people in the village didn’t know that Deng Qingjiang had changed her surname and simply refused to take on Chiang Songhai’s.

This was the first time Chiang Songhai’s daughter-in-law had come to the village. Could it be that something major was going on?

It was unlikely that Chiang Songtao and Ho Laidi could reach out to Chiang Songhai themselves, so Honest Shi asked if he should go inform Chiang Songhai.

After some thought, Xiang Mingying responded, ”Dad, you’d be better off visiting Secretary Yao’s house and talking to him. The secretary knows how to reach Chiang Xiao.”

That would get the message across quicker, and there’d be no need to make a special trip to town.

Besides, who in Siyang Village doesn’t know how favorably Secretary Yao regards Chiang Xiao?

”Alright then, I’ll go to Secretary Yao’s house right now and let him know,” Honest Shi hurried off toward Secretary Yao’s house.

Chiang Xiao was already at the ancient tomb by then.

The entire area had been enclosed with military green tarpaulins to create an access passageway into the tomb.

There were guards at the entrance.

The entrance Chiang Xiao had previously used was very small, but now it had been opened up. The experts were indeed impressive; after removing some stone bricks, the tomb entrance now resembled a vast gate.

There was even a stone slab carved with totems above the door.

Electric lights had been strung up inside.

Next to the entrance, a large shelter had been erected on a clearing, where various items were stored. Some were covered with cloth, while others were haphazardly piled on the ground—there were stone slabs, bricks, and stone carvings.

Chiang Xiao didn’t know what eventually happened to the several corpses, nor did she ask, for doing so would certainly let Meng Xinian know she had been inside the ancient tomb.

She also didn’t know whether Deng Qingjiang and his people had any secret moves up their sleeves.

”Sister-in-law, you’ve come?” Gong Xinhe was just coming out of the tomb when he saw her and immediately burst into a smile. ”Just now inside, Teacher Kuang was mentioning you.”

Chiang Xiao paused for a moment. It wasn’t all that strange for Kuang Yunxian to mention her. What was truly odd was why he would talk about her inside the ancient tomb!

”What did he say about me?”

Gong Xinhe walked over and whispered, ”Sister-in-law, I’ll tell you secretly—the tomb revealed a collection of scrolls, all genuine works of great masters from the Tang and Song Dynasties! That guy, Teacher Kuang said, thank goodness they were found in this day and age, or they might not have been preserved. Teacher Kuang told the camp commander that if possible, they should let you take a look because one of the chambers also contains a large mural.”

Paintings?

And there’s a mural too?

Just as Chiang Xiao was about to speak, Meng Xinian’s voice came from inside.

”Little?”

”Brother Xinian, it’s me.”

”Come in,” instructed Meng Xinian immediately.

Chiang Xiao felt a bit torn.

She genuinely didn’t want to go in, but the tomb held genuine works from the Tang and Song dynasties, and there was also a mural, so she was somewhat tempted.

Perhaps, with Meng Xinian inside the tomb, there wouldn’t be anything to feel eerie about?

In reality, Chiang Xiao was somewhat concerned. She felt there might be mechanisms within the tomb; should she warn Meng Xinian and the others about it?
