The Sea Queen of 1985

Chapter 240: Chapter 240: Rejecting Recruitment

The next day, Han Xiaorui was at the ornamental fish farm when she saw Yang Jianguo return.

”Brother Jianguo, where’s my Dahuang?” Han Xiaorui didn’t see the dog and worried that Wu Yao’s prediction had come true.

Although Yang Jianguo’s eyes were a little red, he was in high spirits, and his voice was filled with excitement.

”Dahuang was incredibly brave yesterday. He followed a lingering scent right to Luo Guang’s car. Then, using the scent from the car, he tracked down Luo Guang and cornered him in his rented house.”

”At first, Luo Guang tried to deny everything, but we found witnesses and physical evidence. It all pointed to him, so he couldn’t argue anymore and had to confess.”

Seeing Yang Jianguo go on and on, Han Xiaorui cut in impatiently, ”I believe in Dahuang’s abilities; finding Luo Guang was just a matter of time. But you still haven’t answered my question—where is Dahuang?”

Yang Jianguo smiled, his eyes full of affection for Dahuang. ”Officer Li is also in charge of another murder case. They caught the suspect but couldn’t find the weapon. Seeing how amazing Dahuang was, he took him to go look for it.”

Han Xiaorui didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. ”Brother Jianguo, is my Dahuang ever coming back?”

”Of course he’ll be back. They’ll send him over as soon as he’s done helping,” Yang Jianguo said with a laugh. ”Don’t worry, Officer Li will bring him back personally. Rest assured, I’ll call Officer Li in a bit.”

’How could Han Xiaorui possibly feel at ease?’

’Now that those officers have seen how capable Dahuang is, how could they possibly bear to return him?’

Meanwhile, Dahuang was proving himself to be incredibly heroic, his sense of smell astonishingly sharp. The criminal was stubborn, adamantly refusing to reveal where the murder weapon was.

Without the weapon, they couldn’t complete the chain of evidence, which meant they couldn’t secure a conviction, at least not yet.

She could live a few more days.

But if they found the weapon, she was doomed.

There’s leniency for those who confess and severity for those who resist.

But she was choosing to resist, hoping to drag things out for another six months at most.

Officer Li brought Dahuang over. After getting a whiff of the female suspect’s scent, it took the dog less than two hours to find the murder weapon hidden under the tiles on her roof.

They found the suspect’s fingerprints on the weapon. She was the killer.

The moment the suspect saw the weapon, she collapsed, all her arrogance gone. She then recounted the details of the crime.

Dahuang then solved a home robbery case. The culprit turned out to be a neighbor.

In just one day, he had cracked a total of four cases.

Officer Li hugged Dahuang’s head, ruffling his fur again and again. ’This is the dog of my dreams, he’s truly amazing.’

But by evening, after eating and drinking his fill, Dahuang started to miss home.

He struggled, trying to go home, pulling Officer Li along so forcefully that the officer had to hurry to keep up, afraid of hurting the dog.

Han Xiaorui knew her Dahuang well. She rode her scooter and found Officer Li. ”Dahuang, time to go home.”

Officer Li held Dahuang’s leash, reluctant to let him go. ”Ms. Han, could you possibly let Dahuang help us out for another couple of days?”

Dahuang paid him no mind. He had already leaped onto the front of the scooter, settling down and placing his little paws obediently on the frame.

Han Xiaorui stroked Dahuang’s head and shook her own. ”No, I’m afraid not. Dahuang has never been away from home since he was a pup. He’s homesick.”

With that, she unclipped the leash from Dahuang’s collar to make him more comfortable.

Officer Li looked at her pleadingly. ”Ms. Han, couldn’t you just...”

”No!” Han Xiaorui cut him off before he could finish. She started her scooter and sped away in a flash.

Watching Han Xiaorui’s departing figure, Officer Li was so disappointed he could have cried.

’I was hoping Dahuang could crack a few more cases for us, but Ms. Han can’t bear to lend him out.’

’But then again, who wouldn’t love a great dog like Dahuang?’

Back at the criminal investigation department, the team was in an uproar over Dahuang being taken back. ”Captain, why don’t we just officially recruit Dahuang?”

Officer Li shot them a glare. ”Have you forgotten we don’t take so much as a single needle or thread from the people? She’s not willing, so we can’t force her, can we?”

”We can’t necessarily feed Dahuang meat for every meal, but Ms. Han can. All right, get back to work, and stop daydreaming.”

’Truth be told, he wanted to recruit him too!’

’From Ms. Han’s attitude just now, it was clear that going through her was a dead end.’

’However, he could always go to Director Ye!’

Although Director Ye had since resigned, they had fought side-by-side many times in the past and had a strong friendship.

Without a moment’s hesitation, Officer Li went to find Ye Feng.

When Ye Feng heard the reason for Officer Li’s visit, he didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

”Brother Li, you really know how to cause trouble for me! Xiao Rui brought those two puppies home right after their eyes opened. She adores them!”

”Now you want to requisition her dog? With how protective Xiao Rui is, of course she’s not going to agree!”

Officer Li gave a bitter smile. ”But criminal methods are getting more and more complex, and our country’s crime-solving techniques are relatively behind.”

”Sometimes, even with all our experience, we can’t solve cases quickly. Director Ye, you should have seen Dahuang in action!”

”His sense of smell is exceptionally keen. Just yesterday, he cracked four cases! One of them was a murder that had gone cold for half a month. Dahuang found the weapon in two hours and solved it!”

”Director Ye, please, just help us out! From what I understand, Ms. Han has two dogs at home, the other one is named Heizi. Just let us recruit Dahuang!”

The moment Ye Feng thought about how attached Han Xiaorui was to those two dogs, he didn’t dare agree.

”Recruiting Dahuang is impossible! You also know my partner’s two children... they’re a little different from other kids.”

”Dahuang has become their companion; they play together every day. You can forget about recruiting him. However, you could get two clever puppies, and I can take them to Xiao Rui to help raise.”

Officer Li’s face showed his regret, but he knew that the fact Han Xiaorui had come personally to pick up Dahuang and refused to have him recruited clearly showed her stance.

Still, for Director Ye to have promised to let Ms. Han help raise some dogs was already a rare opportunity.

”Alright then, I’ll bring two pups over from the K-9 training base tomorrow! We’ll cover all the expenses!”

Ye Feng nodded. ”Okay. I’ll be heading over tomorrow anyway.”

That evening, Ye Feng called Han Xiaorui and laughed. ”I really couldn’t get Brother Li off my back. Since they can’t have Dahuang, they figured you’re good at raising dogs and want to bring over two police dog puppies for you to help raise!”

Han Xiaorui smiled. ”Of course, that’s fine. Have them send the two over! Once these two pups are trained, Officer Li will stop eyeing my Dahuang!”

”When the two kids woke up this morning and couldn’t find Dahuang, they threw a fit! If they don’t see him after school tonight, Pingping and An’an will burst into tears.”

”Solving cases is important, but there are plenty of people, techniques, and dogs for that. I only have one Dahuang! Even if people say I’m not public-spirited, I had to bring him back.”

Ye Feng burst out laughing. ”No one’s saying you’re not public-spirited. Others might not get it, but don’t I know how important Dahuang is to Pingping and An’an?”

”I have the day off tomorrow, so it’s a perfect time to come over! And I can visit Minmin while I’m there!”

Han Xiaorui treated Yang Jianguo and Wu Cuicui like family, so of course, Ye Feng valued them as well.

Now that he knew about something as serious as Yang Minmin’s kidnapping, he had to pay a visit.

「The next day」

Ye Feng and Officer Li met at the K-9 training base.

Originally, Ye Feng had only intended to take two puppies. But news of Dahuang’s swift and heroic crime-solving abilities had spread like wildfire throughout Shencheng’s entire police force in just two short days.

When Officer Li applied to the K-9 base to take two police dog descendants, he was instead handed a crate with ten puppies.
