The Sea Queen of 1985

Chapter 229: Chapter 229: A Way of Conducting Oneself Worth Learning

Granny Cai nodded repeatedly. ”He’s a wonderful boy. I watched him grow up. Even though he grew up in an orphanage, he’s very cheerful, hardworking, and kind.”

”Even now, on weekends when other students go out to have fun, he often comes back to the orphanage. He repairs desks, chairs, benches, and lightbulbs, and he even tutors the school-aged children.”

”He encourages the kids at the orphanage to study hard and aim high. His stipend is barely enough to feed himself, but he often saves what little he has to buy candy for the orphanage to cheer up the children.”

”Sometimes, I worry he isn’t getting enough to eat, so I often have Wenjun send some food to Wenxuan. Now that our family has plenty of seafood and we’re better off financially, we make canned fish and send it over often.”

Granny Cai thought Han Xiaoqing was also good-looking, had a great personality, and was a university student, making her a perfect match for Chen Wenxuan.

Although Han Xiaorui had never met Chen Wenxuan, she figured that any young man praised by both Granny Cai and Liang Xiaoyu had to be a great guy.

”Granny Cai, after hearing you say all that, I’ll definitely keep an eye on Chen Wenxuan. But please, don’t make a formal introduction. When the opportunity comes, just invite us all to a meal together.”

”Let the young people meet a few times. If there’s a spark, they’ll start talking on their own. If they don’t feel anything, they can just be regular friends, and it won’t be awkward.”

Granny Cai deeply agreed. ”Yes, yes, that’s a good plan. But let’s not rush things. We should wait until after Wenxuan is reunited with his relatives and see if his character changes.”

”If he becomes a different person after suddenly getting rich, then we shouldn’t expect to stay on good terms with him. It’s better to just stay away and avoid any trouble.”

Granny Cai’s philosophy on life was incredibly insightful.

”Sister Cai, you’re right,” Han Xiaorui agreed. This was also a test.

If Chen Wenxuan remained the same as always, it would prove he was truly a good person.

A loving partner would be able to understand and support Han Xiaoqing’s future work researching autism.

Soon, they arrived at Fudan University.

Outside vehicles had to be inspected before they were allowed to enter.

Last month, Mr. Xu had donated a laboratory building and advanced experimental equipment to the university.

When Mr. Xu mentioned Principal Wang’s name, the staff at the gatehouse immediately called the principal.

Principal Wang immediately gave them clearance. Not only that, but he also came downstairs to personally greet them.

This was not only because of the laboratory building Mr. Xu had donated, but also because he had used his personal connections to increase the number of spots for students studying abroad and provided assistance to local students overseas.

The technology in Europe and America was advanced, and they had to acknowledge that.

Even if some didn’t return, as long as some did, it was a net gain.

When Mr. Xu saw Principal Wang, he quickly apologized. ”My sincerest apologies, Principal Wang. I’ve come unannounced without an appointment.”

Principal Wang laughed heartily. ”For a patriotic overseas Chinese like you, Mr. Xu, our school’s doors are always open.”

”Your sudden visit today must mean you have something important to discuss. Please, tell me what it is. If it’s something I can help with, I won’t refuse.”

Mr. Xu smiled. ”I’ve found a clue about the son of an old friend. He’s a fourth-year student in our mechanical engineering department and should have registered at school today.”

’Mr. Xu’s old friend was likely also a major capitalist back in the day.’

Hearing this, Principal Wang grew animated. ”Mr. Xu, what’s the young man’s name?”

Mr. Xu replied, ”Chen Wenxuan!”

Surprise flashed in Principal Wang’s eyes. ”So it’s student Chen Wenxuan! He’s one of our top students, always at the top of his class in every exam.”

”Xiao Wu, go to the mechanical engineering department and bring student Chen Wenxuan here. Just say something has come up and he’s needed for a moment.”

Principal Wang’s secretary heard this and quickly replied, ”Yes, Principal Wang.”

Chen Wenxuan was in his dorm room, cleaning. Classes would officially start tomorrow.

His dorm mates hadn’t seen each other all summer and were chatting nonstop.

Secretary Wu found Chen Wenxuan’s academic advisor in the mechanical engineering department.

Chen Wenxuan had already arrived on campus, so the advisor led Secretary Wu to the men’s dormitory for the mechanical engineering department.

When Secretary Wu found Chen Wenxuan, he smiled brightly. ”Student Chen Wenxuan, Principal Wang needs to see you about something. Quick, put down that broom, wash your hands, and come with me.”

Chen Wenxuan froze, confused. ”Secretary Wu, what does Principal Wang want to see me about?”

Secretary Wu just smiled. ”Something good!”

Hearing this, the other students’ eyes filled with envy.

The dorm leader quickly snatched the broom from Chen Wenxuan. ”Wenxuan, what are you spacing out for? Hurry up and go!”

There were eight people living in the dorm room, and the whole group followed Chen Wenxuan in a grand procession to the principal’s office.

His classmates waited outside, however, while Chen Wenxuan followed Secretary Wu into the principal’s office.

Although Mr. Xu was speaking with Principal Wang, his eyes kept drifting toward the door.

When he saw Secretary Wu leading Chen Wenxuan in, he froze for a moment.

”The resemblance... it’s uncanny!”

Chen Wenxuan had a fresh, neat buzz cut.

His skin was fair, and his features were very defined; he had some Tsarist Russian ancestry.

At 1.87 meters tall, he stood head and shoulders above his peers in that era.

Though he wore a slightly worn white shirt, it couldn’t hide his tall, straight posture.

Chen Wenxuan, who had been very nervous, was surprised to see a beaming Granny Cai after he entered.

He hurried to her side. ”Sister Cai, what are you doing in the principal’s office? Did something happen at home?”

Granny Cai took Chen Wenxuan’s hand, looked at the boy’s handsome face, and patted his head.

When Chen Wenxuan was born, he had come prematurely, at under seven months.

’He was like a little kitten, so tiny, with such a weak cry.’

’Back then, trying to save him was a desperate, last-ditch effort.’

’But he was blessed with great fortune. He not only survived but grew up so well.’

’Now, his suffering was finally turning to sweetness.’

”Wenxuan, I ran into an old acquaintance today. I’ve found your family!”

Chen Wenxuan blinked, his eyes full of suspicion. ”Aren’t I an orphan?”

Granny Cai replied, ”I originally planned to tell you after you graduated from university, but now I’ve met a good friend of your birth mother’s...”

The others already knew the story, but Principal Wang and Secretary Wu did not.

After hearing Granny Cai’s account, both Principal Wang and Secretary Wu looked at her with newfound respect.

”Wenxuan, please don’t blame me for not telling you when you were little! The circumstances back then didn’t allow for it. Telling the truth would have been bad for both of us.”

Tears welled in Chen Wenxuan’s eyes as he choked out, ”Sister Cai, no wonder I’ve always felt that you cared for me in a special way.”

”You were right not to tell me. If I had known the truth, it might have affected my character. Thanks to the help and education from you, the country, and the orphanage, I was able to grow up healthy. I’m endlessly grateful.”

Granny Cai breathed a sigh of relief. ”As long as you don’t blame me, it’s fine. Ye Feng, hurry up and take a picture of Wenxuan to send abroad so his parents can see him sooner.”

Nervousness appeared in Chen Wenxuan’s eyes. ”My parents are still alive? We haven’t seen each other for so many years... what if they don’t like me?”

Hearing this, Granny Cai chided him. ”Wenxuan, what parents in this world don’t love their own child?”

”Besides, you’re such a good person. If they don’t like you, that’s their fault and their loss. I’ll always dote on you. Just focus on living your own life well.”
