The Sea Queen of 1985

Chapter 228: Chapter 228: 2 Big Yellow Fish Gold Bars

Granny Cai said humbly, ”It was the right thing to do. My father said we owed the Chen family, and now we’ve repaid a life.”

”Sister Xu, don’t be anxious. Let’s eat first. I made everything myself. It’s the taste of Old Shencheng City. See if you like it.”

Old Madam Xu looked at the table full of dishes, many of which were familiar to her. ”I’m sure it will be delicious.”

Han Xiaorui and Ye Feng exchanged a look. They hadn’t expected such a pleasant surprise today.

Han Xiaorui was once again struck by Granny Cai’s noble character. She remembered a debt of gratitude and did everything in her power to repay it.

You could say that the child, Chen Wenxuan, would have died long ago if not for Granny Cai.

During the meal, Ye Feng made a phone call and asked for another car to be sent over from home.

They were going to the university later, and one car wouldn’t be enough for so many people.

Today’s dishes were not only beautifully arranged but also delicious.

The sweet and sour pork ribs on the table were not only visually appealing but also tender and succulent, perfect for the elderly and children.

There was also a plate of Four-Happiness Braised Bran, which Old Madam Xu and Xu Yingying both loved.

Four-Happiness Braised Bran is a dish with a rich Shanghai flavor. It’s made by stewing baked bran, wood ear mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, and peanuts. The flavor is savory and fresh, it’s nutritious, and it leaves a lasting impression.

Mr. Xu liked the golden-yellow drunken chicken.

Drunken chicken is a classic cold dish from Old Shencheng City.

The chicken is blanched three times until cooked, then steeped in yellow wine with a seasoned brine. The meat is tender and juicy, bursting with the aroma of wine, offering a unique taste.

As for Xu Yingying, she liked the stir-fried river shrimp, a classic Shencheng dish.

Ye Feng wasn’t a picky eater; he enjoyed all the dishes on the table.

After they finished lunch, two cars were waiting outside.

Old Madam Xu was eager to see Chen Wenxuan. As long as her dear friend learned her child was still alive, she would have no regrets in this life.

Ye Feng rode in one car with Han Xiaorui and Granny Cai.

A driver drove Xu Yingying, Old Madam Xu, and Mr. Xu.

In the car, Xu Yingying sighed with emotion. ”I’ve been to Xiao Rui’s home a few times before and met Sister Cai. I only knew her as a cheerful auntie who was a great cook. I never imagined she was such a loyal and righteous person.”

Mr. Xu sighed. ”Yes, who would have thought that a simple act of kindness from the Chen family back then would result in such tremendous help now.”

”Those were difficult times, and resources were scarce. It’s rare to find a family with such a good heart, who watched over the child as he grew up and did everything they could to help him.”

Old Madam Xu dabbed her eyes with a handkerchief. ”It’s true. It’s often the humble who are the most loyal, while the well-read are the quickest to betray. Take that Wen Tao. We treated him so well, but what did he do? He actually tried to kill Yingying. And then you compare that to Little Sister Cai, who not only remembered a kindness but repaid it.”

Xu Yingying said in frustration, ”I know. That damn bastard... there’s no record of him leaving Japan, but we can’t find him either. I don’t know where he’s hiding.”

Hearing this, Mr. Xu’s eyes glinted sharply. ”I don’t think Wen Tao will return to the United States, nor will he come back to China.”

Xu Yingying was taken aback. ”Then where would he go?”

Mr. Xu thought for a moment, then replied, ”I think he’ll probably go to Southeast Asia. He could get a new identity there, maybe even change his appearance!”

Xu Yingying grew anxious. ”Dad, we have to ask someone to start searching in Southeast Asia right away! As long as that man is alive, he’s a serious threat!”

Mr. Xu smiled. ”He does deserve to die. I’ll contact an old friend in Thailand and have him help with the search.”

”Even if we can’t find him, you don’t need to worry. The monk can run, but the temple can’t. Wen Tao’s parents, his mistress, and his children are all in the country.”

”I remember Wen Tao’s mistress and two children live right next door to Xiao Rui! I’ll have people come and keep an eye on them.”

Old Madam Xu nodded in agreement. ”If Wen Tao does well for himself, he’ll come back for revenge. If he doesn’t, he’ll come back for the money he once gave his family and mistress.”

”Instead of casting a wide net and searching everywhere, which is like finding a needle in a haystack, we should just lie in wait. He’ll come back one day.”

Xu Yingying gritted her teeth. ”That bastard is getting off easy! We’re letting him live a little longer!”

”Over the years, Wen Tao’s parents have swindled a lot of money from me. I have to make them spit it back out!”

Mr. Xu considered for a moment. ”You can, but you don’t have to do it yourself. Even if you can’t get the money back, we must make them lose their wealth.”

”Don’t get any blood on your hands. This isn’t the United States. And if you have someone else do it, they’ll always have leverage over you.”

Xu Yingying nodded. ”I understand, Dad.”

In the car behind them, Han Xiaorui looked at Granny Cai with eyes full of admiration.

”Sister Cai, your righteous actions are so admirable!”

Granny Cai waved her hand humbly. ”It’s really not worth mentioning. All we wanted was a clear conscience.”

”If we had never encountered the situation, that would be one thing. But since we did, we couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.”

”If we hadn’t done our best to save that child, knowing he was the son of our benefactor, our consciences would have tormented us for the rest of our lives.”

Han Xiaorui sighed. ”But very few people could do what you did!”

Granny Cai smiled. ”It was and it wasn’t difficult. In any case, it’s all in the past. There’s no need to bring it up.”

”A while ago, Xiao Yu and I were looking at houses. I wanted to buy one for Wenxuan, too. But he’s just starting his senior year of university, so I don’t know where he’ll be assigned to work.”

”If I buy a house too far away, his commute will be inconvenient. I’m waiting for him to settle into a stable job, and then I’ll use the money Mrs. Chen gave me back then to buy a house.”

Han Xiaorui blinked and asked, ”Sister Cai, can you tell me how much money Mrs. Chen gave you back then?”

If anyone else had asked, Granny Cai would have worried they were after the money.

But with Han Xiaorui asking, Granny Cai wasn’t worried.

Because Han Xiaorui could earn that much from a single trip out to sea; she wouldn’t even give this money a second glance.

Besides, Han Xiaorui was a good person and would never covet such things.

Granny Cai answered, ”Two ’Big Yellow Fish’! Who would have dared to spend them back in those days? I hid them all away!”

Han Xiaorui was stunned, and even Ye Feng was quite astonished.

A ”Big Yellow Fish” is generally 312.5 grams, while a ”Small Yellow Fish” is 31.25 grams.

By that calculation, two ”Big Yellow Fish” gold bars are 625 grams of gold bars.

At the current gold price of 60-70 yuan per gram, two ”Big Yellow Fish” would be worth 37,500-47,500 yuan.

Based on current housing prices, that was indeed enough to buy a very nice house.

”Sister Cai, the more you talk, the more I respect you,” Han Xiaorui praised. ”Few people can face money and not be tempted.”

Granny Cai smiled. ”Money is a good thing, but it isn’t everything. Good health and peace are what matter most.”

”It’s good to have money, but if you value it too much, you’ll lose yourself. That’s something I’ve come to realize at my age.”

Along the way, Han Xiaorui asked more about Chen Wenxuan’s childhood.

Although Granny Cai spoke of it lightly, Han Xiaorui knew that in those difficult years, it was incredibly hard just to raise a child, let alone raise one well.

Granny Cai smiled. ”Actually, I was recently thinking about introducing Wenxuan to Xiao Jing. I didn’t expect him to find his family first.”

”Huh?” Han Xiaorui was surprised. ”Is that Wenxuan really such a great guy?”
